Quote:Of course, a few genuinely good, innovative shows slip through their cracks and get on television every year. But with the odds so stacked against them, who wants to get hooked by a new show, only to be heartbroken when it gets canceled six weeks later? I do it every year -- this year's dalliance was with "Firefly," a smart, sexy and funny science fiction/Western hybrid from "Buffy, The Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon. Fox sent him a cancellation notice as a Christmas present. "Firefly" actually took me an episode or two to get into, which is another reason why patience would be a virtue for network executives. If the average show needs time to build an audience, really quality shows need it even more, since the things that make them good are also things that many viewers need a little time to acclimate themselves to.

If you go to the section that lists ratings --- you will find that Firefly had better ratings than Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Dawson's creek, and pretty much everything else on the smaller networks except for Smallville. It only had bad ratings compared to reality shows. Kind of interesting. -Zeke
