The TV spots are now running for both Serenity and "Into the Blue." The spots for "Into the Blue" unnerve me a bit. Before, I thought the 2 films have different target audiences. But now, I'm wondering how many sci-fi geeks might choose to go see Jessica Alba in a bikini instead. On one hand, exciting space adventure. On the other hand, Jessica Alba swimming, swimming, swimming...

Can she steal our thunder? Am I crazy to be worried?

I'm a little worried, because the TV spots are clearly in Into The Blue's favor. They started a few days earlier, and as you mentioned: Jessica Alba in a bikini.

I'm not a huge fan of Serenity's current TV ads, either.

But Serenity has something in it's favor. It has a rather large and diverse following. It has and will have good buzz. And it is (almost certainly, having not seen Into The Blue) a much better film.

Serenity can withstand the competition on opening weekend. It needs to do well, but I'm pegging second weekend as almost as important. Word of mouth got us where we are today, but it will take a little time for that to work on the film.

But, word of mouth got us where we are and it will get us where we need to be.

I don't know, I kinda liked the tv spot for Serenity that I saw yesterday. Granted, I already know what the movie's about, and it might be confusing for those who don't. But I loved that the preview focused on the relationship between Mal and Jayne - it seemed so appropriate for a spot in the middle of Prison Break!

WHITEFALL

Just you wait... in a little while, it'll be nothing but "Into the Black"!

Seriously though, I think Into the Blue might detract from the random mob of people who go see any movie that's on, but only before they SEE it. If nothing else, Serenity has substance, which, as a thriller, Into the Blue lacks by definition.

Will it steal our ticket sales? yes. Will it disuade people who are already going to see the movie from seeing it? Nah. Will people see it twice? I really, really doubt it.

I survived a day in Whitefall and all I got was this lousy signature!

Into the Blue may have Jessica Alba in a bikini but it also has Paul "shoulda stayed a supporting actor" Walker.

I've seen Serenity. This is a word of mouth movie. It is quality. It may not be #1 on opening weekend but word of mouth is gonna get around and I promise you every Browncoat worth his/her salt will see this movie at least twice . . . . . . . on opening day.

I have faith that this gem will make a profit and that 2 sequels will be in our future.

Oddly I think the 'greatest game ever played' will detract more from opening weekend sales. it's not in the same vein persay but it looks like a damn fine film and with movie prices as high as they are will definately create a hard choice for those random viewers out there.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

As many have said word of mouth, and other efforts of the browncoats took us from a cancelled television series to a major motion picture w/ a $40+ million budget. That is a feat unheard of in Hollywood. How many times did we hear "Firefly is dead. Get over it!"? We didn't get over it, we didn't quit. Now we have a BDM.

We need to keep doing what we have been doing all along. We need to keep spreading the word & share those Firefly DVDs w/ everyone we can get them into the hands of. We need to continue pushing, we just need to turn up the intensity. We are down to 9 days & every single convert we can make could mean the difference between the BDM being successful or our not getting a sequel.

Huh? - Serenity has Jewel Staite in dirty coverall sexiness, Gina Torres being a beautiful badass, Summer Glau kicking ass, and Morena Baccarin looking gorgeous with a Bolt Gun - what's the question??

Stand out in the lobby and "talk" (by talk i mean shout) with your friends how awsome serenity was...and how your gunna go back time and time again....that you had never been a fan of those types of movies or shows (TOTAL LIE I KNOW) but this movie totally changed your mind....how its a must see film...and that it IS the next Star Wars.

Mention any of the above and people will listen!

Also tell your friends to get friends and go see it....or threaten to end them

RETRO

Hmmm...

The way I see it, Into the Blue follows the Same law as Dukes of Hazzard. Lackluster movie attempting to find redemption in a moderatly hot girl.

Unlikely.

Anyone remember "Honey"?

Didn't think so - it was the last movie that was promoted as nothing more than "Scantily-Clad Jessica Alba".

Fantastic 4 and Sin City did well because they were comic-book/fantasy films, not because Jessica Alba was in them. It didn't hurt that she was in them, but that's not why people went.

Still, I bet Dark Angel fans will feel vindicated if "Into the Blue" bests "Serenity" on opening weekend.....

Yeah, I don't get the idea of an "Alba thing." Hollywood is literally overrun with "hot" actors and actresses; they're so common you could cast the same pair in any cheese/beefcake movie interchangably and it would make no difference. So why would anyone give a rat's rectum that a particular cut-out Barbie doll from the masses is appearing in this film? Please. My advice to horny teens is grab a summer clothing catalog and lust over pages of models in bikinis, then spend your movie-going money on Serenity.

I don't know what your problem is, but I bet it's hard to pronounce.

See, I don't think Into the Blue has an "Alba" thing going (although I just now made the Dark Angel connection and am finding it highly amusing) as much as it has a "hot girl in a bikini" thing.

Yes, the Serenity girls are far hotter (even moreso because they have brains, too. Sometimes highly addled brains, but what's life without the threat of soup in your hair or being killed in your sleep?), but that doesn't exactly come across on the trailers...

I do like the idea about hanging out in the lobby afterwards. I will definitely do that.

The reason I'm worried is because they did NOT show Jewel, Gina, and Morena in the TV previews--and only a couple shots of Summer. The Into the Blue spot showed Jessica Alba in a bikini about 4 or 5 times I think.

I'm not worried about the 2 movies competing (I know ours is better) as much as I am how the TV spots will influence opening weekend. Does that make sense?

Hey, I'm the biggest damn Dark Angel fan out there, but I'll rent Into The Blue, Serenity is the real deal, and I think most DA fans will agree (sorry, Jess...).

If Miss Alba is smart, she'll petition to be in the Serenity sequel....

in a bikini....

My worry re Jessica Alba? She needs to eat more. I saw way too much ribs and hipbones in that trailer.

But don't forget about that segment (which, I believe by now to be fairly small) that very much loathes anything Firefly because they blame it for Dark Angel's cancellation. They'll be the people outside the theater that probably haven't bathed in a couple of days trying to get people to go see Into the Blue instead of Serenity. If you see them, just go up and say something witty, preferably from the movie or show. Use words with more than two syllables, that tends to confuse them.

Not at all, at best "Into The Blue" is a tarted up re-make of Peter Benchley's "The Deep" which, given all the sun and sand and characters identifiable to the teen market pretty much screams 'summer movie' but it wasn't released in summer... translation? It's likely a dog.

While Miss Alba has her panting legions of fans, 'Sin City' didn't exactly break box office records for all its hype. Don't expect her bikini clad rump to save this action yawner from a watery grave.

Serenity has a built in fan base who will see it more than once (you know who you are) and is getting a major marketing push... everywhere I look online or on TV I'm seeing previews/bumpers/banners. The studio is treating it right, now it's time for the fans to put their money where their mouths are.

Let's break some attendence records.

Well, in a conflicting report, FilmJerk says Into the Blue will have "2000 plus" locations while Serenity will have "2750 plus."

The thing that worries me is that Jessica Alba is making the rounds on some the major and some of the major/minor talk shows next. Using TiVo to look at the coming week, nobody from the cast of SERENITY is booked on them. So it looks like JESSICA ALBA IN A BIKINI is going to get plugged more than SERENITY. Makes our job just a bit harder, I think.
