It seems Universal Pictures has commissioned Joss Whedon to direct a script he penned himself after wrapping Serenity!

The project is discribed as a dark horror fantasy in the tradition of Buffy and Angel and centres on a young female protagonist.

"It's the story of a young woman's journey that involves a great deal of horror and some heroics... It's certainly darker than 'Serenity,' and there are a lot of left turns along the way. It is something I had in mind for a while, and it just poured out of me when I finished my film."

That's about all that's available at the moment but hey, new JW stuff!

Is it just me or does the fact that JW prefers young female "protagonists" seem to be getting a little old?

And I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an over-abundance of schooling. Mal, Train Job

On the one hand I get where you're coming from, Joss
does tend to write about young women. But on the other hand is there some limit of stories that can be written about young women? And if so, why? After all the only two traits that can be picked out there are age and gender. Is that all people are? Once you've told one story about a young woman, you've told all the stories that could possibly need telling? Shouldn't the same apply to young men? Every writer can only tell one story about a young man before being asked to move on to the next demographic?

Sounds kind of silly to me.

The question to me is this: does Joss write about the same person each time? If so, maybe you've got a point. After all, if every young female protagonist he writes about is exactly the same--then he must not be a good writer. Let's look at his track record then:

Is Buffy the same character as Cordelia? Do they follow the same path, and do they end at the same place? I would answer no to all of this. Joss is addressing different things with both of them. What about Fred? Again, I think it's clear that we've got a very different person on our hands. How do any of these characters compare to River? Fred probably has the closest link, both of them being geniuses who went kind of nuts. Still, they're hardly the same. Fred is about someone overcoming a hard time in their life, while River in my opinion is more about the love between siblings, and just how far that love goes. So far as we've gotten she hasn't gotten over her insanity--although it wouldn't suprise me if Joss had been planning on it later down the line. Kaylee is extremely different from all the above characters. And Zoie is extremely mature from the start, making her path a different one from any of the others.

My point in all that is that Joss is a genius when it comes to character. He can write all these woman and make them all obviously individuals seperate from the others. And more so he can address different themes through every character he writes. My other point is that "young female protagonist" is a really broad term. There are as many stories to tell about them as there are people in the world.

Regarding this article, Joss posted this over at Whedonesque:

Quote:

Hi guys. Just one word to y'all about this: They got the title wrong. It's "GONERS". Like, y'know, plural.

More I will not say.

Yet...

So, they managed not to call him Josh Weldon, but balance it out by mispelling the movie's title.

That's progress, I guess...

I do have to admit it's getting a bit worn out. Young girl with some sort of super power or who saves the day.

Though Joss always writes stories that are dark and go places I never thought they would and I don't get tired of that...so what do I know?

Wow...I'm excited. Anything new from Joss is good in my book.

Question for all those making comments - first off, well, there are only two choices as to gender for a lead, male or female. Joss has said millions of times over that he appreciates strong, independent women and that he is definitely a feminist. His comfort level is writing a female protagonist, and honestly he does such a beautiful job that I don't mind either way. Plus, Angel and Firefly had male leads (Angel[us] and Mal) so it's not as if he always writes in one direction.

Secondly...I don't think there's been any mention of superpowers as of yet. Just horror/fantasy, which doesn't indicate a slayer or any of the like. Let's wait for the project to take its course and see what Joss does. I feel he'll definitely be able to create a wonderful new piece of work that we'll wanna see.

"Bwaa...it's kind of a warrior...strikes fear into the hearts of..."

Complaining about the young girl who can kickass thing is kinda dumb.

How come people dont ever complain about the large amount of male superheroes.........i guess no one thinks thats old news.

c'mon guys, if theres one thing Joss does best, it is write. Having seen Serenity, he's still got it.

Well said, Ax! "Young female protagonist" sounds like Hollywood pitch talk to me. Dumb the concept down to the bare minimum so that the studio execs can pigeon-hole it without straining their brains. You do that to any body of work and it'll start to sound repetitive. Not because of the work itself, but because of the sheer blandness of the adjectives.

As for me, I don't care what Joss wants to tell his next story about. If he's telling it, I want to listen.

I'll vote it as "plausible," but I'm still relatively certain that Joss's next film as writer/director will be "Wonder Woman."

After that, sure, "Goners," if... IF... somehow, someway, Serenity does not do well at the box office.

We must all do our best to make sure this does not happen, and make "Serenity Two" his post-Wonder Woman project.

I had that same thought. I really did. But then I remembered two other shows Joss created--ANGEL and FIREFLY. Both had male protagonists as their main characters. I have a hunch SERENITY may be a bit different given the obviousness of River's prominence.

But it certainly came as no surprise that GONERS will center around a young woman.

A change-up would be nice, though. Joss likes going to the dark side so much it would actually be innovative if he directed a movie with a happy ending.
