Just curious. It's always good to meet fellow Boingoloids.

Guess I'd count as a Boingoloid - "Nothing to Fear" and "Only a Lad" were just about my favorite albums in '86. (Yeah, I know they came out in '81 and '82. I was a bit behind the times!)

Alright, a bit more articulate.

Boingo is my favorite band ever (and I'm an east coast Boingoloid). I grew up listening to some of their songs, my dad had a couple cds but he's not a big fan. I became attached, and now I'm a huge fan, I have all the albums, the Farewell DVD, Skeletons in the Closet VHS (got it used), and three cds full of rarities (that I'd be happy to send to anyone that wants them, there are terrific songs that never made it to any album), etc. I only regret never having seen them in concert, since I am only 18 now so I missed them.

I used to be active at the Yahoo Boingo groups, and am currently active at www.oingoboingo.com (the upcoming official site's forum). I'm known as either Another Boingo fan, or ReptilianSamurai.

And, uh, well it wasn't much more articulate, but what can ya do? I love everything about the music, it has true depth. Many musical layers, and very meaningful lyrics. The most underappreciated band of all time.

My favorite songs rotate all the time, but presently I love Insanity, Water, Grey Matter, Just Another Day, Fool's Paradise, Perfect System... hell, I love them all!

That has to be the coolest thing I've heard in a long time.

Checkout my Boingo sites and have fun:

I haven't updated Fool's Paradise in '05 yet... but I have a ton of stuff to add to it that's been piling up.

I've been reading those reviews (actually, reading again - I first visited that site a few years ago). Very cool, although I disagree on a few points- I happen to love So-Lo and I find Dark a very pleasant change of pace for when you're in the right mood. (Especially Glory Be, Run Away, and Dream Somehow).

One of the greatest things about Boingo is their wide range of distinct, unique sounds and styles that are all just as good as the next and totally unlike anything any other band ever has done, or will do. All held together by insanely complex instrumentation - something most pop lacks - and very deep, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes plain silly lyrics all sung beautifully by Elfman. All the musicians show such skill and talent, and I love the inclusion of non-traditional instruments - most obvious would be the three man horn section; also the use of xylophones and other percussion.

There are not words to describe the sheer perfection of Boingo in any of its incarnations. From its modest, quirky, raw beginning - through its more evolved sound - through the more mellow Dark - through the fantastic, orchestral final album - and everything in between - Boingo is always excellent.

And that is why I keep finding myself coming back. My mood for music may shift from time to time to different bands (including TMBG, also very good), but it always returns to Boingo. And I keep finding myself rediscovering songs I used to ignore and loving them! Some of my present favorites, such as Fool's Paradise and Lost Like This, were mere afterthoughts when I originally listened to the albums that they are contained on.

With just about every band, especially my second favorite, TMBG, there are always songs that you skip, that you dislike. With Boingo I am hard-pressed to find ANY. The few I don't listen to as much would be the covers, Cry of the Vatos (which is fun, but not very listenable), Wild Sex (too pop/dance-y), Sweat (although I love the chorus), and Running on a Treadmill (way too repetitive - even if it is intentional). I really love their entire catalog, something I cannot say for ANY other band.

Elfman is the most underappreciated genius of our time. And while he may be gaining recognition for his phenomenal scoring work, too few remember his 17-year career leading Oingo Boingo.

I am proud to declare myself a Boingoloid. This music speaks to me on so many levels, it defines a major part of my personality.

And that's my attempt at a brief review. ;) Did I gush too much?

It would be impossible for someone to gush too much about Boingo around me, I think.

I'd love to post your Boingo reviews if you wanted to give your thoughts on each release.

Anyone want rarities? I've got over 50 never-released and obscure songs, and I'll send them over AIM to anyone that wants them. (Sorry, fast net connection is required). Message me - ReptilianSamurai

I'm curious about the rarities - I used to be a pretty hardcore Boingoloid, back when I was in school in SoCal. This was the mid-to-late eighties, when the band was hitting the big time. I heard about the band from people who'd been fans from the very beginning. My favorite stuff of theirs is the work up to and including "Dead Man's Party", the really psycho and pissed-off songs, but I own it all and like it all. That early Boingo sound of mariachi + African + punk is ambitious and they pull it off amazingly well.

I didn't meet my wife at the Salt Lake City stop of the farewell tour, but I might have - we were both there and only a couple of rows apart down on the floor. :)

Somewhere I have a cassette tape of a promo Oingo Boingo did for KROQ, the station that really got them rolling. It's an odd little acapella thing with the band sort of chanting "K, R, O, Q, K-Rock" over and over and Danny singing "Oingo Boingo knows what is best for you, the only radio station worth listening to is K-Rock!" I've been meaning to make an MP3 of it if I can find it - is that among the rarities, by any chance?

How big is this collection of rarities? I'm guessing 50 songs, if they're in standard MP3 quality (ca. 128K/s), it'd have to be in the ~150 megabyte range.

I would very much be interested in this. I found this thread in search of a reasonably priced Skeletons in the Closet VHS tape.

not to start a whole Trekkie/Trekker style debate, but I've always used "Boingophile" as opposed to "Boingoloid". Then there's the ever popular "Elfman Addict"... youngun's being brought up as such are, of course, "Tender Lumplings".
