Are we ready?

We've poured every ounce of energy we have into bringing new Browncoats into the fold. Now is the time we reap the rewards we so richly deserve. But we mustn't rest on our laurels. Joss is counting on us to return in droves next weekend and we WILL. We bought the DVDs en masse, we made alot of converts...and I converted yet *another* person at work today; a girl returned Firefly then told me she'd just bought the DVD set at Media Play; yet another said she and her husband couldn't wait to see the movie. Then someone called and asked if we had Firefly in for rent. Guess what? It had already been checked out by one of our regulars mere minutes after it'd come in. I feel something growing here folks...

But I digress.

In 2002, Joss Whedon didn't just create a new television series. He created something alive and tangible, a cold splash of water in the face of what sci-fi had become: staid, tired, and predictable. This 'Verse lives and breathes. It brings us all together.

We rose from the ashes like a metaphorical phoenix, dusted ourselves off and did not go quietly into that good night (to steal a line from a really famous person) when FOX lopped us off at the knees. We were steadfast and resolute. Joss was just as dedicated, if not more so.

Now we have our BDM and I feel like it's the night before Christmas. Is anyone else on pins and needles?

To Universal - you are a shining light in a sea of low-watt bulbs. Mary Parent and Scott Stuber, you're both amazing. You saw that Joss's track record speaks volumes and did something other studios get scared to do: you took a chance. So to one of Hollywood's oldest movie studios, I say thank you a million times over.

To the cast - thank you for bringing to life some of the most brilliantly realized characters I've ever seen in any medium. True Joss's writing is lyrical magic but there are horrible ways to screw up brilliant dialogue. Thankfully, each cast member added their own special touches and flourishes on Firefly to make their character uniquely original. To all of you, please realize that the devotion of all of us faithful goes above and beyond --whatever future projects arise, we will support you. BTW, good luck with Slither in January, Nathan!

And finally to Joss - I saw Buffy The Vampire Slayer in the theater in 1992. Yes, I did and I enjoyed it for what I thought it was, not realizing it had been severely truncated. Looking back, I'd have liked to have seen your version on the big screen. Little did I know that it would become one of the best television series ever. I loved Angel as well. Firefly is the icing on the icing-covered dessert thing. Thank you immensely for this. You create worlds, characters, and dialogue that stir the imagination and awaken the soul. A million and five thank yous, sir, for all that you've done, for all of us.

As for our BDM, I'm seeing it at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon, then again at 4:10. I'll be seeing it several more times this weekend also, then back again next weekend.

It's our time. This is our very shiny moment.

Fellow Browncoats, let's soar!

I'll be watching the show at 3:40 PM here. That's the first showing of it round here. Then Imma see it again I think. My mom really wants to see it since I've got her into Firefly. She has to work tomor... today (officially the 30th here).

I just watched the Scifi Inside Look of Serenity a 2nd time. Hope it didn't spoil certain parts for me.

Well I'm filled with anticipation. Only thing that would make this better is if Joss or Nathan or any of the rest of the cast were here!

Anyways I was wanting to ask... What is "BMD"?

PS: Simon gets eaten by Reavers.

JK. Well I hope he doesn't....

Me: Gonna have to cancel, it'll interfere with my 12:10pm Serenity showing.
Co-worker: Should i call them and rescedule it for 3pm?
Me: No good i got a 2:30 showing on the Ultrascreen for me and two freinds who couldn't make the midnight sneak peak showing this morning.
Co-worker: How about a few hours later?
Me: How about a few days later.
Co-worker: Are you serious? how many times you going to watch that movie in one day???
Me: Dunno, how many times is it playing?
Co-worker: You'll get burned out on it you know.
Me: Hmmm maybe your right, i should pace myself here if i am to be still going strong into the third week.
Co-worker: 3rd WEEK?? your not seriously gonna miss that much work for a silly movie are you???
Me: Well initially i had planned to... wait, is that a trick question?
Co-worker: I give up.
Me: Soooo you want me to get you a ticket?

Sorry, but I have to say some thing.

How the hell can any of you go watch the movie over and over and over and over again? Sure 2 times is fine. 3 Times if you really like it. Maybe even a 4th time if you go with some friends who haven't seen it yet. But all those times paced out. I can't believe any one who is going to see it 6-9 times in just 3 days! NO MOVIE IS THAT GOOD! Thats like a waste of money really. Don't you got some thing better to do rather than watch the movie over and over multiple times in one day!?! Don't you have an actual life outside of Firefly!?!

Sorry I just had to say that. I'm a huge fan like yall and want to see the movie to even do better than any Startrek movie and Starwars. I'm pretty sure I'll be seeing it atleast 2 times. Maybe a 3rd time as well (maybe if I got some extra money and nothing else to do). No matter how many times I see the movie in theatres though it surely won't be all in just a few days. If yall want to see it over and over again so badly, then why not just download a pirated copy? Surely there will be atleast one copy for download that some one will tape as they watch it in theatres. Hell maybe some one has already.

Anyways I think it's just redicolus that any one goes and see this movie 3-9 times in just a few days. Any one who does needs to get more of a life and find a better way to spend their money.

I am normally someone who agrees - once, maybe twice seeing a movie on the big screen, but I really feel like this movie is a personal friend! I wasnt there from the beginning as it never came onto normal Australian TV, but I got the DVD of the series when they first came out, after hearing so many good things, and was completely hooked. I hoped straight on the net, and found out the series had been cancelled - I was gutted! I have not waited as long as some for more Firefly-verse, but its been over a year and I am so excited! I am not going to see the movie repeat times for something to do, but more to support the film and everyone involved in it - and thats the impression I get from most of the other people here, they are going repeatedly to support the film, and hopefully give such good numbers to the movie that it will spawn sequels!!

Hugs and kisses
Lill

I have to disagree. Do i watch movies over and over again? yes. The GOOD ones.

3-9 times in a row? Only times i did were for Braveheart and the original StarWars.

Will i do it for Serenity? Maybe not all in a row but yes i will watch it many many times because i want it to succeed so we can all have a sequel. I am just doing my part to see it gets done and I believe i'm not the only one here who will!
FYI There is nothing wrong with my social life as i am taking different people with me to each showing and have been planning this for some time now. Saying anyone like me needs to get a life is only YOUR OPINION and a rude one at that.
P.S. It's my money and i'll decide how to spend it and what is a waste or not thank you very much!

Actually a quick check shows that there are 6 copies floating around i'm very sorry to report. I will NOT however be downloading any of them, and think that was a totally lame suggestion for you to make... one hopefully people will ignore!
Besides your missing the whole point here. I want a sequel pure and simple. I am doing what i can to get as many people in that theater as possible. I cant see how as a "fan" you could object to this and tell me i am wasting my money.
Besides the movie kicks some serious backside... and is totally worth it imho.

I cannot believe we've achieved this, and I am so thrilled and happy for all of us, especially the hard working team behind the feature.

Just one word of warning though, remember the special hell for those who talk at theatres - and I add one extra to Book's list, those who harrass reviewers, whatever their opinion or merit. Play nice, browncoats.

Anyway, I'm feeling giddy - it's finally almost here! (UK) Hurrah!

Man, this some dedication.

But don't get too crazy with multiple viewings this week, we want this movie to have legs as well as a huge box office open.

Opening big, and then have a 60% drop off in grosses can hurt a movie too.

Also some of us can't see it till Saturday, and are bringing a whole mess of converts after the marathon screening/shindig they're having today (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). So leave some tickets for us!

Not that I blame any of you.

Damn, does it feel good to be flying again.

You’re talking about a work of fiction, something that lasts longer than governments and transcends time periods.

France has had six governments since the publication of The Three Musketeers. Which do you think the average first world citizen cares about more, The Three Musketeers or the July Monarchy?

Governments die quickly, laws are overturned at an alarming rate, science reinvents itself constantly, religion is continually reinterpreted but fiction lasts. Horace’s fictional poetry is still topical today and he fought under Brutus against Mark Anthony.

-

There are two reasons someone would see a movie that much:
1 They like it that much and as such the enjoyment that they get out of it is worth the money considering the rather depressing world we live in.
2 They want to make a difference, and it is worth it because their effort, combined with the effort of those like them, is more likely to make a lasting impression than most things they could spend money on.

-

Personally I’m not going to watch it that much in one or two days, but the I wouldn’t tell someone to find a better way to spend their money, there are perfectly good reasons to spend it.

Well, if we all believe in the BS that the big movie industry and media conglomerates feeds us everyday, that *might* be true. We can even argue that the ripe tripe that the RIAA and MPAA wants to feed us that d/l media is costing artists big dollars *and* illegal per the copyright act. But that very same copyright act also gives people fair use provisions... Now, if you tell me that you are going to d/l a movie *and* watch it *and* enjoyed it *AND* you are not going to the theatre - NOW! that's what I call a huge problem. But d/l does not equal theiving does not equal piracy... In fact, last time we still have a huge real pirate problem in the Malaysia area - if we are worried about real pirates, that's where we should be attacking the problem. Besides, these guys really kill, rape, and pillage - even though they've gotten rid of their puffy shirts, eye patches, swords, buckles, peg legs, and parrots.

Sorry, I don't believe in everything that big corporations make up all just on the idiotic believe it would increase their profits. D/L does not reduce the profit or take money away from JW's children.

I also don't believe that every single law on the books are ethical or legal. Push comes to shove, we can always talk about it and not even have to believe a word that any of these idiotic laws or big corps dishes out...

Now, if you tell me that you are going to d/l a movie *and* watch it *and* enjoyed it *AND* you are not going to the theatre - NOW! that's what I call a huge problem.

The way I conjure it, the movie was made by Joss and paid for by 'Versal. It's their movie, and I respect and appreciate them for doing their good works.

They've made it clear that they don't like people downloading pirated copies of their movies. Since I respect and appreciate them, I'll abide by their wishes.

There's a world full of folk out there who don't get that. I suspect a good deal of the RIAA lives in that world where "respect" and "doing the right thing" are confusing concepts. They spec out their arguments based on "profit" and "damage," and they use all manner of legal arguments to justify a thing that boils down to greed.

You, Jason, are speaking to their arguments, and not to the heart of the matter. Them being wrong doesn't make it right to do as you please. It just makes them wrong.

Now, I ain't tellin' you how to live, so don't be labelling me a Preacher or nothing. I live by a simple code, and for me, the issue of downloading pirated movies boils down to respect. You see it as you like, and act accordingly.

The rest of us ... we'll just go on about our business, supporting our Big Damn Heroes. *nod*

JASONZZZ

Well, that's the way you had to read it - what with the way that I'd posed it. But, the matter is that I am not simply reciprocating in kind what the corporate golems are dishing out. I do what I do b/c of simple economics added in with the malleability of the digital medium and b/c it makes sense - corporate greed aside. I agree with you, respect is one thing, but this goes beyond the semi-universal simple courtesies of respect. If we all respected each other and every single thing there is, we would never be able to step out of the house to begin with and be perpertually respectful to every smidgen of matter and living thing. Respect also goes both ways, if the artists really think that their role in life is one of providing entertainment and enriching the lives of others, then what's with the constant coin counting, money grubbing, and treating everyone as if they are thieves - little known loss-prevention industry secret that the majority of losses are from inhouse stealing, goes from RIAA/MPAA all the way to Osco/Target stores - so why treat their "customers" so shabbily? it's lack of respect, trust...

Asking you not to d/l it as a gesture of respect comes from a misplaced motive and lack of understanding of how the digital marketplace really works; at the end, they are still afraid that they will be losing profits. That's all there is to it. But both studies and marketplace have shown that these are simple and irrational fear of losing control.

It boils down intermediately to two things:
- if you d/l something and liked it, you're very likely to go and get the real label.
- if you d/l something and hated it, would the label have been able to get you to buy it to begin with?

That goes ultimately into one thing ---> marketing , which really boils down to bullshit. It's them trying to tell you/ dictate to you/ fool you into buying something that you aren't going to like. Which is their real goal to begin with. They want to turn each one of us into predictable little drones, slicing and dicing us into neat little stratified demographics and market segments. Then spoon-feed us things that they *think* we like...

No!

Look, if I want to get a new boiling pot, I'm going to find out what makes a good boiling pot, then I'm going to scour the market for the right one that meets my specs. Then, I'm going down to the market and get a feel for the pot that I want, I'm going to touch it, "kick it" a few times, make sure it's suppose to do what it does and find out if the price agrees with me. So, *after* I've evaluated it, tested it, then I *might* buy it if it suits me...

Contrast that with what choices I'm allowed or "asked" to make with the stuff that the entertainment industry shovels out... I'm going to sample it, kick it around a bit, and if it's something that I like and I want to keep, I'll buy it.

From the POV of the "artists", it's a simple matter of evolutionary biology and economics. The current model is if your craft is crappy, that's all right, if it fits in to a "genre" that the huge marketing moguls wants to move, then you can still foist your crappiness onto the "market". Now, in a real model, where the market is not artificially buoyed by these tyrannical forces, real artists with real talent get real people to like their stuff and pay real money for it. Talentless hacks don't and get to either try harder or they can be beneficial to society by finding a real job. This benefits not only the real artists by providing real competition and satisfaction that only *real* talent makes it, but also benefits you and me because we will get real talent and not some half-ass shabby crap that gets shoveled out the door of the marketing van just because someone on the 39th floor thinks that my marketing segment likes this crap...
