... ... ... I don't know what to say... The one and only reason I will see this movie again is if I am forced. Joss... you ruined this for the browncoats. I did my best the whole way through the movie to keep an open mind to keep my mind off the problems i saw... From the first scene i realized what had been done to our firefly and it sadens me. You changed the back story, you killed book, you killed wash, you didnt keep your original idea of no sound in space. I in the end wish that this movie was not made. I do not support serenity anymore but i still am madly in love with firefly.

Normally I try to be polite (In fact I'm usually the ones TELLING people to be polite... I'm just sick of people whining about stuff that made them sad instead of coming up with CONSTRUCTIVE reasons why X thing was a problem), but... quit whining. "Oh poor me, they made me upset by killing a character." Because Joss and his team of writers have NEVER killed a writer. I mean, of course, he never killed or had disappear Buffy, Angel, Cordelia, Faith, Tara, Fred... need I go on? Of course, since he NEVER has killed or harmed ANY Of his characters, we couldn't POSSIBLY expect that a Firefly character (and let's not forget, a core cast of nine is pretty LARGE) could be killed off.

Furthermore, the fact that these deaths evoked a lot of emotion made the film that much more powerful, which in turn is a testament to how it's written.

And how exactly was the backstory changed?

well yes im sad too. my favorite character wash died! but dont give up on serenity! come on! you cant let two deaths stop you from likeing something and to stop you from appretiating the rest of the movie as a whole.

Okay, I kinda agree with you about the sound in space deal, but remember that he was trying to make this movie appeal to a wider audience than just us Sci-Fi types. The movie was all about the story, not the characters and that fact is what will allow it to be approachable by non-Firefly fans. The general population could give a sheet less about the physics of space - they'd just be unnecessarily confused about the sudden lack of sound and it'd detract from the story for them.

As to the backstory, I have no idea what you're on about - the movie fit in perfectly with the series (although Inara's involvement seemed to me to be a technicality slapped into the story after the fact - it could just as easily have been cut out or redone without her with minimal effect - to those unfamiliar with Firefly, her presence really made little sense).

I, too, wish Wash hadn't been killed, but maybe Alan's expanding popularity played a part in that decision - his career is obviously doing fairly well. I do like the tribute to Wash - his dinosaur characters were plainly visible on the control console throughout the movie and remained so even after his death.

Changed backstory:

Where? The only backstory we have for River's escape is Simon's testimony and seeing as Mal was going to kill him it isn't particularily reliable. Next thing you'll be saying is Book was always a shepherd...

Character death:

Awesome. Joss can't get enough props from me for doing this. I cried my little boy eyes out.

Sound in space:

Did you see a different movie to me? As I remember it there wasn't any sound in space. There was sound in the fight at the end because it was in a gas cloud, therefore particles, therefore sound but space itself was just as silent as ever? :S

And the premiere is closer...

Thank you Phoebe, 'cause I agree with everything you said. I loved the movie, it tore my heart out and, yes, I never wanted what happened to actually happen, but it did and it made the movie stronger for it's emotional impact.

The backstory was changed a little bit, but nothing that was too noticeable or that people couldn't get around. Joss *himself* didn't notice it after three years of planning, writing, directing and editing it, and it had to be pointed out to him, so I think we can give him a break.

It was about River's escape and Simon's role in it.

In the episode 'Serenity', Simon says that his contacts took River out of the Academy and she was smuggled to him later.

Simon: "If I funded them they could sneak her out in cryo. Get her to Persephone, and from there, I could take her... wherever."

And, later, Simon tells Inara: "I don't know if she'll be all right. I don't know what they did to her, or why. I-I just have to keep her safe."

Yet he clearly has inside info, because we saw him inside the Academy, talking to Dr. Mathias, getting all the info right then and there. Enough info, in fact, to have the safety word later in the movie.

It's there. But it's very minor and shouldn't really have ruined the whole movie. Joss has also said (can it be called 'fanwanking' if it's actually Joss himself?) that when Simon originally told the crew of Serenity what had happened about the escape, it was at a time when he didn't trust them much at all. They'd just forced him to reveal River, he wasn't about to go all "and then I did this and this and this" with them. Basically, Simon *lied*.

XEROGRAVITY

I'm torn on this issue. Of course I loved the movie, and can't get enough of Firefly. I hate to see two main characters killed off. Book and Wash really added alot of spice to the ensemble. I'm still trying to figure out what Book was supposed to have been in the past... an ex-Alliance intelligence officer? Perhaps a mole placed onboard Serenity to watch over River? We know he carried a VIP identity badge of some sort that got him express medical help on the show from an Alliance ship. I'd have preferred to see the entire crew get back in the saddle and ride together again if Joss was gonna start killing them off. If Book had to get the axe, we should have at least seen him die in a blaze of glory, not get the story after the fact when he's dying. That would have been a more fitting tribute (and I'm hoping Joss will visit a 3 hour Director's Cut on us when it goes to DVD). As for them killing off Wash, a reaver harpoon though the hull just stunk to high heaven. I dunno... I just think maybe killing off 2 members of the old crew was a tad bit too much.

Hopefully if (1) we get a sequel (very likely I think), or (2) by some hopeless miracle Firefly series is resurrected and flies again on Sci-Fi channel (where it should have always been from the getgo), Joss may give us fresh new faces to fill the void. At the very least, River seems to have gotten somewhat over her psychosis and turned into a class A asskicker, and bonafide member of the crew (replacement pilot for Wash?). I want more of that! And now her storyline ties in with the reavers in a way that we could only guess at.

In the final analysis, much of what we saw in the movie, all of us would probably have preferred to see unfold over many episodes of Firefly stretched out over many many seasons. I think Joss had to deliver on the loose ends of the plot that left the fanbase hanging when the show got cancelled, and he only had 2 hours with which to work it all out. He's trying to mesh it all together, give his loyal fans something to cheer about, and also tease the storyline enough to enthrall people who never saw the episodes.

I loved the movie. Sad to see 2 of the characters get themselves perished, but also realistic about the limitations. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping this is the beginning of a sci-fi franchise that could and would rival the likes of Star Wars if we fans freak out (in a good way) about the show and the movie routinely. Spread the word!! I sure as hell am.

Going back to see the movie a second time today (and likely a third time tomorrow). Once just ain't enough.

I'm also one of the Browncoats who accepts Book and Wash's deaths.

BTW, on the subject of the backstory for Simon and River in the movie, this is one of the things that I didn't and don't question. The movie pretty much establishes flat-out that Simon was being less than truthful when he told the crew about how he rescued River, and what we learn in the film also makes more sense when you think about it; Simon doesn't trust Mal's crew, so why in the heck would he entrust River's safety to a bunch of people reputedly less savory than Mal's crew without being along (in some fashion) to make sure that he wasn't double-crossed?

Take my love
Take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care
I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me
Take me out to the black
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me
There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me

I think to many people wanted a two-hour episode on the big screen. Instead we got a BDM!

I was shocked the first time I saw it. It made such a difference when I saw it the second time. (Most here will agree.)

I'm off tonight to see it for the seventh time. Can't wait!

I think it was brilliant! From the man who has done such fabulous television, he did an incredible job on this action packed movie.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sad to see two of our crew members die, but as a storyteller myself, I feel like there was obviously a need, or Joss wouldn't have done it. I respect that, even as I mourn the losses, and believe me, I do.
I guess the only question I have is, what's next? The rumors speak of possible sequels? Can we have a sequel that doesn't involve our witty Wash? No affectionate preaching from Book?
I say this - I don't know, but I'm willing to believe in the magic of the Whedonverse and hold out for more. And in the meantime, Serenity has my undying love and support - always has, always will.
