I think Book was an ex operative. Rakaar, you touched on belief. Book asked Mal " When I talk to you about belief, why do you asume I mean God?". The Allience reaction to Book's ident card in safe is on par with Dr. Markeson's reaction to finding out that The Operative was ... an operative. (sorry, Austin Powers moment)
An ex operative is likely to have the same knowledge and skill sets that Book displayed during the show. I can also see that the Operative having found that the government was not worthy of the belief that he held, that guided his actions, would turn to God. It fits everything that I've observed.

You may want to change the title of the thread. What Book was implies that he is no more. Just a thought.

UNCHARTEDOUTLAW

Good point. The title change, that is. And honestly, after mulling it all over a bit. I am likely to agree that Book may have most likely been (was that long enough?) an Operative himself once.

Maybe a job went horribly wrong once. Maybe someone got to him the way Mal got to "the Operative". That got him rethinking his ways, thus the turn to God. *shrugs* It does kinda make the most sense.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am almost completely convinced that Book was an Operative before something changed his view of things & he went off to become a shephard. After seeing the movie & his talk w/ Mal & apparent knowledge of Operatives has pretty much made up my mind that is what he was before his change of heart.

Book and Mal were always able to have a conversation without resorting to actually using words. Think back to the end of their big conversation, and please forgive my misquotes, only one viewing until after payday:

"Someday you have to tell me how you know so much about this kind of thing."

"No, I really don't."

That could be Book saying he doesn't have to tell him because Mal already knows everything after their little talk about operatives.

SKYSCRAPER

The novel is a bit different in how Book dies.

Not that I think it matters, but just to be on the safe side, i'll hide it in a spoiler box thing in case anyone wants to read it.

** Novel spoiler **

Select to view spoiler:

After shooting down the Alliance ship attack Haven, Shepard Book is attacked by the Operative. The Operative does that painful looking nerve thing and the Op talks to him. It seems, The Op knows exactly who Book is. The Op then walks away, deciding that Books blood isn't worthy of staining his sword, and has the soldiers shoot him.

I'm not sure if the Joss is going to treat the novelization as factual, but this is an interesting. It does seem to me, that maybe Book was an Op at some point. Almost explains the whole Object's in Space episode, where River hears what Book is thinking in his head. Almost.

Like I've said about Book earlier, I hate he died but I like he died without revealing the secret. People die with secrets all the time,

... Seldom do secrets stay dead with them, though.

Once, just once, I want things to go according to
the gorram plan!

Shameless plug for my new shirt design.

I felt much the same way. I've heard that many have asked Ron Glass what Book was, and his basic response was that he really didn't know either, but that we should tell Joss if we want to know Book's story. So my new campaign....

I believe he was an ex operative also because when he would talk to Mal he would say things that sounded like what the operative guy was saying only Book was saying believe River is good and the operative was saying he believed River was in a since a bad thing that belonged to the Alliance. I thought when he died he went out the way he should have, giving advice and guiding Mal in what was to come.
