BLACKOUTNIGHTS

Seems as if a lot of people don't get why the crew of Serenity didn't beam Mr. Universe the message from Miranda to record and then release...here's my answer...

With Mr. Universe already in the hands of the Operative, no way does that message get out to the rest of the galaxy if it's taped and then rebroadcast. The only way is to get the Operative away from Mr. Universe. And Mal knows the Operative is there, so he isn't going to send the message until the coast is clear.

Also I figure that if they have the original tape broadcast from a high quality communications system it would be a lot harder for the Alliance to claim it was forged. It seems likely to me that any signal Serenity could send would lose enough quality that there would be no way to tell if it was authentic or not.

But I think the main point is that Mal predicted that the Alliance was there, so simply sending a copy would accomplish nothing. They had to be there to make sure it went out.

uh...they said right in the movie: "we don't have the equipment necessary to broadcast this". I took that to mean, "we got a VHS player and this is on DVD".

Dial up vs. Cable - Dial up loses every time, and they wanted to do broadband, not just one wee little signal - 30 planets all at once. Serenity didn't have the technological umph for that.

Probably also, they didn't want to risk it being intercepted, traced back to them and find an Alliance cruiser on their backsides.

How did Mal know the Operative was waiting for him though is the only thing I don't understand? Lucky guess? Or did Mr. Universe tip him off some how? I can't remember.

Ah! You may have nailed it. That clear, plastic thingy sure looked high-tech and it was recorded on the Alliance vessel that had "Research & Rescue" written on it. No high-tech thingy players on Serenity that I recall but certainly Mr. Universe has one. Plus it might have to be broadcast on high power or else maybe the Alliance could jam it.
