OK, I did the obligatory spoiler warning in deference to our foreign friends. So, you've been warned.....

I realized something about the secret of Miranda---we don't actually know where River learned it.

It is assumed that she picked it up from the "Key Members of Parliament (tm)" that are mentioned, but it is not proven. She also could have gleaned it from the minds of the Reavers during the heist. We know she read them, she was talking about "They refused to lie down" or something like that; which is clearly a reference to how the Reavers reacted to the PAX on Miranda.

So, whatcha think: did River learn the secret from the Alliance or from the Reavers?

Well, after the incident at the Maidenhead, when River is locked up and Simon is wiping the blood off her, she starts babbling about about "Old men, covered in blood. It doesn't touch them but they're drowning in it."

Joss has said he writes his crazy people so that their dialogue has the logic of poetry. So, I'm taking from this that she's refferring to the "key members of Parliament" who initiated the project and then covered up the disaster. Thus, I think she got the memory from them.

I've also heard speculation that River's combat conditioning has made her closer to the Reavers. In her weird dream sequence in the classroom on Miranda, she's the only girl who doesn't lie down. She's the one tenth of one percent. She's the Reaver of the group. So I think she does have some connection to the Reavers.

Excellent point! That would tie them to it well. And since she was having some of those dreams when Simon rescued her that would have been well before Reaver contact.

Different point: When the operative looks up Mal's war record, doesn't it show his rank as Captain instead of Sergeant?

Yep. It says:
Captain Independent Army
57th Brigade
VOLUNTEER
