One single thing you love about Firefly?

What is ONE SINGLE thing you love about Firefly/Serenity? Please be specific and explain why. Don't just say Jayne or one of the other characters. If you love Jayne then instead say what specifically you love about him. Oh and this isn't exactly have to be what you love the most, just some thing you love about Firefly.

OK...

For me I love the name of the ship, "Serenity". The reason I love that name is because of what it symbolizes in the show and what it means.

DONCOAT

In a word, its humanity.

It may be set in a distant, high-tech future, but it's really all about the people, their choices, dilemmas, feelings, and interactions.

It is, in short, a drama in the classic sense of the word. Not a soap opera (though it has a few such elements). Not a formulaic action adventure, though that's there aplenty. Not a western "oater", though many of the same themes are considered.

Firefly and Serenity are about people we care about confronting issues we hope we never have to face and managing to pull through and keep flying.

It's Shakespeare for the 21st century.

Family.

The crew is like family and Mal views his crew as family. We have seen in the series & now the movie that Mal will go to any lengths to protect his crew, regardless of the cost to himself. It is this sense of love & camaraderie that really appeals to me.

The acting.

Everyone bounces off everyone else. No mugging or upstaging. (OK, there's plenty of upstaging, but that's because they are what I'd call Proper Stars, and it was all shared out equally anyway...)

The lack of Emoting was brilliant. They got their messages across without that appalling gurning (Google.com) that actors feel they have to treat us to. There was more emotion conveyed than in any other 50 shows you could mention. And conveyed better.

Only 14 episodes, and everyone was in character right from the off. The script was quite gimmicky, with the Western-speak, and loads of gags, and actually contained a lot of information, which might (or might not) be important in the future, but was delivered in such a way as not to come over sounding contrived or annoying.

And the other single (yes, I'm cheating...) thing was the odd feeling I have about the axed series.

I sort of want more, but even if there wasn't, it wouldn't kill me. What I have seen was extraordinary, and something I'll always be glad of.

In and of itself, the series was a complete pleasure in every possible way.

Family. It was everywhere with all ten characters. Mal didn't just create a crew, me made them family. In particular, I always loved the brother/sister elements so often and well played by the cast at different times. The most obvious is Simon and River, of course, but that was felt between them all as sibling, parental, even aunt or uncle. Difference is, this family was made up of people who chose each other. Even Simon and River. He could have chosen to leave his sister with those philistines twisting her brain, but NO, he rescued her. For better or for worse.

The tenth character - Serenity - provided a home for them all. The moment she first appears in the movie, you know she's something special. And when Wash pulls up over the hill during the chase scene, there's a feel - for me at least - of a momma bear going to rescue her wayward cubs.

Like GEH, I loved the whole enchilada, The "feel" of the show. All the other components contributed to the "feel". And the fact that he didn't beat you over the head with the special effects.

Like an orchestra, you take away the violins and it's a whole different sound or "feel" to the music.

The same thing I loved about Buffy--the way that no one gets away with anything. Even their most private and excruciating embarassments are laid bare by the cutting remarks of the other characters. I've never heard so many awesome zingers in my entire life. It was my favorite part of Buffy, and it resonated immediately with me within minutes of popping the first season one DVD into the player.

Loyalty.

In "War Stories" when they are gearing up to rescue Mal. The way that Kayless says that the captain would do the same if it was any one of them is just so...FACTUAL. They all just KNOW that he would rescue any one of them, because he HAS. You just don't find that kind of loyalty to others anymore. Not in Hollywood or in real life. There is only one person I can depend on that way, and I KNOW I can depend on him, I don't wonder if I can. But this group has that in each other. They feel safe in the knowledge that when they are weak or vulnerable, someone is there to help them or even carry them if necessary. Even Tracy knew that and he wasn't on Mal's crew anymore.

The ensemble (meaning both the actors themselves and their characters).

It's rare to have such a talented cast that can create living, breathing characters that make you care about them and like them, even if they're not the nicest people (i.e. Jayne). Someone said "humanity" earlier and that is dead on accurate. These characters are human. They all have flaws. The combination of outstanding writing and actors who deliver their lines in such a fluid manner brings this ensemble to life in a way that is like very few other shows.

The writing and the art of storytelling.

Without going into Joss-worship gushing mode, it's the writing. If you've ever tried to write dialogue, short stories, non-fiction, whatever, writing is HARD. It's not a matter of having a dictionary and a thesaurus and stringing random words together. All of the things other people have posted about why they love Firefly/Serenity boils down to the writing and the art of storytelling. Very very few of the current TV shows can astonish, amaze, delight, surprise, make me cry, and make me believe in a 'verse out there. We want a sequel because these people have lives we care about. They are well-written characters and as real as any pixel-generated onscreen presence can be. And no that's not to disparage the actors or their abilities but who here groaned out loud at Padme and Luke's love scene in the last painful SW? "you're beautiful", "no, you're beautiful", "no, I'm beautiful because you love me"

Would never happen with this epic (at least not with Joss at the helm -- okay a little Joss worship).

The scene in Ariel when Mal was about to eject Jayne from Serenity.

It showed how far Mal would go for his crew. He would kill for them. It showed his compassion for Jayne. It showed that Jayne cared what the crew thought of him.

It was an emotional clincher.

That is my favorite scene.

I also like all teh guns but you said one thing so forget I mentioned that.

This post has Movie spoilers in... you have been warned.

I love how the show and the movie make you cry when your laughing and laugh when your crying...

In Serenity (I warned you about spoilers) you start to giggle when you hear wash say for the last time: "I'm a leaf ont eh wind watch how I (Well watch how you get stabbed in the chest with a reaver telephone pole). I was brought to tears unwilling to believe that he was dead.

Then not two minutes later I was giggling again through my tears when Zoe says "Do you really think any of us are getting out of here alive?"

And Jayne in true Jayne fashion says: "I might"

The ability of the show to poke fun at the serious and sad is great. I love how the humor is mature (mostly) but still funny without being dry.

Good characters, strong writing and humor. I think humor really drove the show in ways other shows haven't... from Wash to Kaylee to Simon to Mal's stammering 'commands' to Jayne-isms.

Yeah. Jayne makes it. he's that bad ass guy looimg in the background everyone thinks is just some lunkhead and then he goes and says something insightful, he's the bad guy you want on your side, the gun toting cigar chewing throwback that I most identify with. He says exactly what he thinks (to everyone's embarassment and amusement at times) and he's usually right. (Grenades anyone?) He's got a soft side he might show to a whore... or to a guy that gives him a rain stick. He's really a well-rounded character.

Jayne is the one character that really didn't change much for TV to big screen... including his guitar playing...

I love what Firefly (as a TV show) represents. It represents Joss Whedon's true vision as uncompromised as possible. In an age of horrific movies based off books that don't live up to their full potential, it's nice to see one man finally realize his dream and do it as he wanted.

The details... specifically, the kitchen. On most SF shows, they try to make ships look futuristic. On our beloved show, they understand that people live there and want it to be homey. I love the wooden dinner table, the stencilling on the walls, the way it looks like a kitchen. It shows people who spend a lot of time in space want their mind taken off of where they are and the situation they're in.

Yep, that and the hot girls.

One word: Jayne

I love the show and love the writing and love the special effects and the idea of it, but what makes me keep watching the DVD episodes over and over again is Jayne.

I love Jayne for the fact that he is the big mean slightly dumb guy that everyone uses their wit to pick on. I love the fact that he licks his knife at the dinner table, and names his guns.

And AB is just adorable, and really brings Jayne to life.

Meanwhile, I'm just rounding out the weekend with a little praise for my dear peeps. Considering everything we've had to overcome, this is an extraordinary achievment. And you guys have been in the front lines. I lurk, I know all. So thanks. Some of you might know that this flick means more than a little to me.

Yes, the second weekend will tell all, as we've always known. I'm not here to push you guys -- you push yourselves way harder than I could anyway. I'm just trying to figure out how to get the message out to the guys that aren't you, that don't know any of you, and that don't run into someone who saw the film. I'll be hounding the extremely patient Uni execs on that very subject. Like the lady said, "People have to know".

It's not that there HAS to be a sequel. It's just that I've got so many IDEAS...
