Of course, after so much hype and anticipation, I had many expectations for what would happen in the movie. Here is a brief comparison:

What I expected: Book would be killed
What happened: Book was killed

What I expected: Simon would be killed
What happened: Simon not only lived but was uninjured and even go together with Kaylee

What I expected: The Operative would die in dramatic fashion. Something along the lines of getting sucked into an engine or sliced in half after falling down a shaft.
What happened: Mal spares The Operative's life and they even have a final "I'll kill you if I see you again" conversation and The Operative even aids in repairing the ship!

What I expected: A cliffhanger as a segue to another movie
What happened: Pretty solid closure and a complete stand alone movie

What I expected: A semi-happy ending
What happened: Wash was killed (and I even uttered and audible gasp!)

What I expected: A great movie with lots of fun effects, story that tied up loose ends and hilarious banter
What happened: A great movie with lots of fun effects, story that tied up loose ends and hilarious banter

Small nitpick: Simon was shot in the gut (a very serious wound) but was saved (presumably by the Alliance docs) at the Operative's request.

Might as well use this thread for this..

This isn't exactly something I expected, but more like something I feared.

I heard that there was a segment of fans who were really violently opposed to something in the movie.

A scene in the trailer where Jayne angrily flips over a guy with blondish hair wearing a brightly colored shirt worried me even more, because I thought it was Wash - I didn't want to freeze frame it and look for fear of spoiling myself, but I was really worried. - My thought was that people were violently opposed to the movie because Whedon had written, for some reason, that Wash had betrayed Serenity by giving up River (or information that would let them get her) to the Operative, possibly because he was being threatened with the death of everyone he cared about, etc. When I accidentally heard he died, I was still worried, because I thought maybe it would be one of those 'died nobly while trying to redeem himself for his huge betrayal' during the big attempt to storm the facility and rescue River (which is something else I also expected that never came to pass - I figured at some point River would be captured and the crew would all fly in and try to rescue her).

I'm glad to see it wasn't the case.

Duh. I am a M-O-R-O-N. I guess I should go see the movie again!

BTW, that is not a small nitpick, that is a HUGE mistake on my part! Thanks for correcting me!

You have a strange sense of "uninjured". I call getting shot in the gut a pretty decent injury. I sure hope I never get "uninjured" in your mind.

That's what I get for taking so long to hit "reply". I guess this was covered pretty well.

You know what I expected but never happened? I heard long ago in the making stages that there was a new crew member that was only listed as a "young tough"...I was pretty ticked at the spoiler actually. Then there was never a new crew memeber. Go figure.

What I expected: Mal and Inara would have a big interaction expose/fight/no-love scene that would send up some more smoke in their sizzling relationship that fizzled quickly after Heart of Gold.
What happened: No more than 2 minutes of interaction between them that left me feeling cold as a fish..... I want the angst back, the longing for each other. I want the secret LUST...

I think Joss included just enough of the Mal/Inara tension to tide us over until Serenity II : The Big Damn Romance.

You want to read the script in the Visual Companion...many a Mal and 'Nara scene were cut, cut, cut.

what I expected: operative would be killed.
what happened: operative's life spared.

what i expected: everybody is ok.
what happened: book and wash died.

what i expected: mr. universe being somewhat of a bad guy. (judging from the trailer)
what happended: total good guy.

what i expected: jayne to get into a one sided battle with wash judging from the trailer. (jayne is like an ox in comparison)
what happened: some random guy from the bank hiest.

but i'll have to read that screenplay from the visual companion. i think im afraid b/c i cried while reading about wash's fate. i hate crying, but joss makes me do it anyway. it's a funny thing we go thru every no and again...

I could be remembering incorrectly, but after Mr. Universe's conversation with Mal, he turns to The Operative and says something like "Where's my money?" or something like that. If that is true, not very good guy behavior in my opinion but, again, I could be remembering this COMPLETLEY wrong.

Mr. Universe said something like, "Toss me my thirty coin, but I'm telling you arrrghh!"

I think it was pretty clear that he was coerced into betrayal, not that he was bought. The reference to Judas' payment I took as ironic.

Wow...ok, so Mr. Universe is two face...I can deal. I still like him.

And the crew knew that it was a trap...but it's Mr. U's fault for Wash's demise...one less brownie point for Mr. U.

Small point...I'm pretty sure Mr. Universe said something to the effect of "toss me my bag of 30 coin...I've got a noose waiting [stab]." A seeming reference to the motivation and fate of Judas Iscariot in his betrayal of Christ. I think the "coin" might have been metaphorical.

My 2 bits...

I thought it a metaphor too. However, there really was no trap by Mr. U's place. The trap was a fleet waiting that they knew about, and brought their own surprise. It was in no way his fault Wash died. The Reavers just ended up getting him.

erb, related nitpick. Getting shot in the gut *and* hopping up and around... A physical impossibility.

The trailer gave way too much away! Oh, look, Mal's bringing a fleet of reavers with him to fight the Alliance, prolly just a sub plot! "They won't be expecting this!" Yeah, but I was.

What I expected: The Operative as actually Early's cousin looking for revenge.
What happened: The Operative was just being paid to do it.

What I expected: No one to die
What happened: Book and Wash totally die.

What I expected: The reavers begin attacking more central planets, so the Alliance and the Browncoats would have to join forces and fight with the reavers(I thought I saw Serenity have guns on it in the trailer).
What happened: The Operatives alliance army versus a bunch of reavers mal pissed off.

What I expected: Mal and Inara to get together while no one watches.
What happened: Simon and Kaylee get together while River watches.

BOOKSWORD

What I expected.

The Operative to be some gun toting pschopath killing somebody somebody every five seconds to prove how bad he is.

What I got was a man that was a true beliver, suave and deadly and kind of tragic.

What I expected.

Book and\or Wash buying the farm

What I got.

The two of them going into co-ownership into said farm. Wash (sniff) like us never saw it coming.

What I expected.

Mal and\or River gunning down the Operative like the Psycho killer I assumed he was.

What we got was the Operative patching up the crew and ship, sparing them and Mal letting the broken man go.

What I expected.

Was Book to **finally** reveal his big dark secret.

What I got was no real answers but a possible one in the operative.

What I expected.

Was a Big Damn movie.

What I got was a **F&^*KIN** Big Damn Movie.
