Greg was part of what made the show so special. I know the composer for Serenity will do an outstanding job in his own right, but those beautiful world music-inspired melodies Greg gave us for the series will be in my thoughts as I watch the movie...

From what little I've heard from the soundtrack, It's blown me away already, so I'm not too worried.

I most definitely will. In fact, there's a whole feel, that Greg's music captured so well - a sort of ambling folksiness, that I missed in the movie. It's been explained away as part of a set of necessary changes in the transition to the big screen. But I know what I like, and I miss it.

I'm going to miss it. The soundtrack music you can find on the web is similar to Greg's music, like a mocha latte' is similar to a mocha cappuchino (mmmm, mocha!) but they are not the same. From what I've heard, the movie has a full blown score, and Greg's was more incidental music. Different purposes, I guess.

Yes, me! The music from the movie is great, and I'll likely buy the soundtrack, but Greg's music was like a character almost... :(

I, too, will be missing Greg's music greatly...anyone hear if the CD from the series ever came to fruition? I know it was 'in the works' but never saw any post about it

One of the essays in "Finding Serenity" talked about how Greg Edmonson assigned different sounds or instruments to different people or things. There's always piano around River and Simon. There are wild drum cadences whenever Reavers are mentioned. The Alliance is represented with horns.

I've only heard the promo CD for the movie, but I get this same feeling. For example, there's that same kind of fiddle sound to the "Serenity" track that you hear in the show whenever you see the ship. It even sounds a bit like The Ballad of Serenity at one point. Just bigger and more grandiose for the big screen.

I greatly admire both Edmonson's and Newman's talents, and I can't wait for the soundtrack to come out so I can buy it. I also wish they'd put out the Firefly soundtrack!

He talks about that in this interview too.

The new composer was obviously copying the style of firefly to some extent to give it a similar feel. I think the Serenity theme is wonderful and Serenity's intruduction on the big screen with the theme and the roar of the engines is awesome. However, the rest of the music just does a good job of supporting what is happenning. There are none of those moments where the music is heart-breakingly beautiful like in firefly.

Here's a few snippets from firefly that I put together: http://rj200.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FireflyMusicMix.mp3

Please Universal - Greg Edmonson for the sequel!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I will definitely miss Greg's music on the BDM. The music added so much to the series, stirring emotion, setting the tone, etc.

I am sure the music score will be good too, but Greg will definitely be missed.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but yeah, Greg's score was sort of like your friendly musical narrator...

I didn't even know they weren't GOING with Edmonson for composing!! DAMN! I totally will miss that. I agree with you totally -- every episode my brother and I watched, we were constantly commenting on how cool the music is. Sigh...we'll see when we see the movie, eh?

I think both composers do their job extraordinarily well for the tasks they've been given. David Newman gives Serenity a more orchestral and "important" sound, but I still got that same tingly feeling whenever I heard the guitar twang or the violin hum.

Greg Edmonson did a wonderful job for a television score, and I'm not sure it would translate extraordinarily well to the silver screen, which is why Joss went with David Newman. Both Firefly and Serenity have a unique sound to them, and I love both for different reasons.

Do you know if there is a CD for purchase that has the music from Firefly? I would LOVE that. I'm sure they'll be one with the score for the movie -

I'm notorious for buying movie scores (One of my most recent favorites is the score to Finding Neverland if anyone is interested.)

Be well!

Having seen the BDM I can safely say that, as good as Edmondson's music was, you won't think twice about it when you're watching the film.

the firefly soundtrack at foxmusic.com is gorgeous. the twangs are so perfect for the western, and the drums are incredible. i'm listening to it right now~ it's just as emotionally potent as any film soundtrack and stands on its own without any of the show's voiceovers as fans had provided before. exquisite.

I understand that a feature release geared to stimulating the emotional responses of moviehouse crowds, with the intent of jacking an emotional response that triggers repeated viewings for the lowest-common-denominator marketing niche, might requrire the skills of a musical genius with a different skill set than Mr. Edmondson possesses.

Still, that intro to Heart Of Gold sends chills throughout my nervous system. Better than the remainder of the show, imho, and that's sayin' something.

Not to mention the spot-on musical backgrounds throughout the series.

A toast to Greg! Shiny, man!

I will certainly miss him, though I am sure Whedon had something to say about how the music was done for the Movie too.

I just downloaded the TV soundtrack from Fox and realized a few things. First, how much I love Early's theme (The one with the Oboe). It reminds me of Peter and the Wolf and fit that episode so well. Secondly, the Funeral music in Message was awesome and helped make "The Message" my favorite Episode. It was so amazing to see the sheer presence of each of the characters on the ship. And the guy who played Tracy did a wonderful job with the actual message.

"When you can't walk you crawl, and when you can't crawl..." Well you all know the rest.

I loved that episode.

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

I will totally miss that music.

That being said, I do not think the music would have been suited for the movie given the difference in tempo. The movie is so much faster, so much more in the "now" than even the show, and no commercial breaks.

I loved the music in the show. I also love the music in the movie. Joss has done a wonderful job giving life to Firefly again, in every detail, including the music.

See you in the world!

I respectfully disagree. The one thing that bothered me the most was that the music wasn't quite right; wasn't Greg's. For the most part the music was fine, but there were a couple of spots in particular where the music felt completely wrong to me.

But I'm in the minority apparently, which is just fine by me!

I thank you for this. I started misting up when the "Out of Gas" themes played.
And I'm glad you included the Eavesdown Docks music.

I don't think so, on repeated viewings I think more and more fans will be aware of what the music could have been like.
Newman did great, but greg's music is so ingrained in the show, like someone else said, a character's missing.
Jerry Goldsmith would've got it right....
*sniff*

But Greg Edmonson should have done it!

You're right...it's like a CHARACTER was missing. I loved the FIREFLY music so much I purchased and d/l it...it is great!! And I have no real drive to purchase the Serenity soundtrack... funny... I'm such the soundtrack purchaser! I'll go see it again this weekend -- I was so wrapped in the story I didn't even take much note of the music...hmmm...
