CALLYGAL

So, I just woke up from a good dream. I was watching GMTV, the news guy was dressed up in Browncoat garb and started making some crack about Serenity's opening weekend numbers. Dream-callygal's dream-heart sank. Then newsguy grins and announces that we opened in number one with one of the best opening weekends in UK records. Cue much dream-smiling. Now, I'm not crazy enough to believe that said dream is anything more than wish-fulfilment on my part, but it got me to thinking that maybe, with all the panic on the boards lately, I've been thinking about this the wrong way.

I know the publicity guys haven't been great to us, and I know we've all been doing what we can to make up for that. So when friends/family happen to catch one of our ads, they remember that we mentioned that movie. I'm bringing eight people to the cinema with me tonight, all with the promise that I'll refund them if they hate it. (Which, given my student income, means that if they all hate it, I starve, but I digress) And I'll be going again next weekend. I've told my non-Oxford friends, and the family, that they need to see this movie, preferably on weekend one or two. But still, with the best will in the world, I doubt I'm going to be responsible for more than 20 tickets sales. Which is nothing compared to the whole UK, right?

Just like the UK box-office is nothing when put against the US?

Movies like ours can live and die by their international release. And more than that - Joss has been good to us. Far better than the UK normally warrants from someone who should be Hollywood Royalty. He brought us the gala premiere, he stood on the red carpet and signed autographs and then brought us more screenings. Our BDHs come to conventions and do the photo and autograph thing, smiling the whole time. Lets show them that it means something.

There are enough people in this country that have loved Joss's work and haven't seen Firefly, but saw his name on the trailer, to count for something. Surely, surely, we have enough people that are attracted by Summer's breasts hanging out of underground posters. Enough that saw the trailer and remembered how much they loved Star Wars before Lucas killed it. Enough for whom, like my guy-friends, the promise of "pretty gals with guns" is an appealing picture. Enough who have read/heard the positive reviews by Empire, SFX, Radio 1, Jonathan Ross, the Guardian, the Times (and Heat, apparently)... All we have to do is help guide some of these people in the right direction.

Maybe we can't singlehandedly make a BDS. But maybe we can convince the Universal bods to hold off on the panic. Maybe we can spark off something in the US box-office. Or maybe, if nothing else, we can make the words "valiant effort but a failure" stick in their throats, just a little bit.

We've spent the past week angsting over the US opening weekeing, not able to do anything about it. And now we can. So, to repeat the words of more eloquent Browncoats of last weekend, just for a little bit - we hold.

De-lurkerdom rant over - continue with your business

I'm not nice. I'm just highly susceptible to guilt
