Allow me to post a copy of it here in case Lee Stringer's words get buried...

<>

One of the guests at the Shore Leave Convention this weekend was Lee Stringer. Stringer, who has worked on the CG effects for such shows as ENTERPRISE, FIREFLY and the new BATTERSTAR GALACTICA.

Our scooper asked him about FIREFLY possibly returning to television and this is what Stringer had to say:

I asked him if there was any truth to the rumor that based on the Firefly DVD sales and how the movie Serenity does, if Firefly may get brought back to TV, similiar to what happened to Family Guy. His response was, "Well, I think Joss feels that he has already done TV and been successful. He has his sights set on Movies right now. I think depending on how well the movie does and is received that he would like to do a follow up movie (sequel). Now, Universal owns the rights to Firefly and they also own Sci-Fi. As you may know Sci-Fi will be running the original episodes of the TV series soon, if they are not already. You guys don't really realize how much your feedback matters. Writing the companies doesn't always work, but if the series does well and folks make noise, it does make an impact. Sci-Fi could very easily call up Universal and ask for new episodes to the series. The only question in that case would be if Joss would be as involved in the series as he was before. So, no, there are no plans that I know of for it to come back as a TV series, but I could certainly see something like that happen.

Thanks Joss. We don't need Firefly back on the air. Newp we'd all prefer to have sequels once every 2-4 years or so, since TV is now beneath you. Who would rather have 22-27 hours of firefly every year versus 2-3 hours once every so many years. You are so "george lucas".

Hold on a sec, I thought FOX owned the rights to Firefly and owned them until 2009 or some such; they were the ones that got to decide if more TV episodes were made.

I'm not sure how the rights agreement works for Univeral to be making the film, though.

I'm pretty sure I read that FOX only released the rights to make a movie (or three) but future TV episodes are not allowed. FOX could call for more episodes, but I don't know if we want to have Firefly back on FOX where they can screw with it some more. And Xerogravity, I think you're being a little harsh on Joss considering you're basing it on something someone else said about him and not anything he said himself.

From what I've read, he initially wanted to shop it around to other stations. First they said no cuz they had rights, but the fact is none of the other stations were interested (till the fanbase went nuts). Bottom line, interest or no interest, Joss Whedon has graduated to movie maker. And we all know that in hollywood once you go from TV to the big screen you're A-list. To go in the other direction is to admit you're some kind of failure.

I'll have my people call his people, maybe we can do lunch.

I honestly always thought that his plan now was to wrap up the Firefly storyline with these last movies. That's fine with me; i personally can't really see it going back to a series again, though i'm sure that i'm in the minority.

Either way, i'll just be glad to see the ship in the air until the story's told.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hey Mr. Betrayed individual,

You ever had a job where you did well? Where you had coworkers who liked you? Where you got accolades and awards from your peers?

Ever get offered a promotion? More pay, more prestige, better benefits?

You turned it down, right? You turned it down so that you could stay with the coworkers who liked you. You gave up money and prestige and benefits, all to stay with your chums, right?

And your chums, they were glad, right? They were happy that you turned down the promotion. They were overjoyed that you had the chance to further your career, but turned it down to be with them.

Right?

Cause if they did, they're not your friends. And if you're going to be mad at a television director for wanting to direct movies, that's fine, but don't feel betrayed. Feel selfish.
