1.) there will automatically be a sequal because the film broke the #2 spot

2.)everyone is going ga ga over this film all over the net, and while a large percentage of these people are big sci-fi fans and nerds alike, there's a massive amount of people that don't even care about space epics that are amazed with Serenity........... this automatically will force a sequal

3.)the budget was only $ 35 million, which not only is considered peanuts for a sci-fi epic production budget, but if you take into consideration my # 1 and #2 statements and the following facts

1.) the film has already grossed just about half it's budget in it's second week

2.) 80% approval rating from all the biggest critics and not-so big, collected at Rotten Tomatoes.com

3.)Joss had two hugely successful television series on tv during a seven year run........both still have a huge following and made Joss well known with both tv viewers and comic book demographics

4.)he's becoming even more hot property in hollywood and the comic book business w/ being behind numerous insanely high property comic book franchises from Marvel, writing scripts for upcoming films and he's set to direct Wonder Woman....

Hollywood knows his phenomenal potential, they've fallen in love with him, and have him set up for even more projects in the future than I've already stated!

Why do you think Universal funded Serenity in the first place?

It was an investment and they knew the chances that they may or may not get anything out of it, but they're thinking for the future w/ Joss!

both Universal and the many present and future investors that will be backing Joss AUTOMATICALLY, with all of my afforementioned points taken into consideration of course, means that the Serenity sequal will be a reality regardless of if the $35 mill film budget is returned.

I haven't even brought up points about the dvd sales worldwide yet, and I should'nt have to if you're smart enough to realize that this recent Box Office panic at the message board is absurd!

oh, and Universal DID do a terrible job marketing Serenity for two main reasons

1.) the trailer was terrible and almost made me not go see the film, was nothing like the film in any way, and it gave no hint about the plot and made it look like a generic space flick

2.) releasing the film in late sept........pure stupidity, but the irony is that the film ended up taking the #2 spot like the little engine that could :)

I think you're being overly optimistic, but I'm glad someone is at least. I think #1 is rubbish basically, that point could apply to any movie but doesn't. It might mean that Joss gets the chance to direct more movies, but I doubt "just" opening at number 2 in the box office (while good work) won't be enough to get a sequel. This is a slow time for movies, $10 in the opening weekend ain't great now and would be terrible in other months.

#2 though, I hope you're right. Overall I just hope you're right!

my post was meant to shine light on the larger picture, and not so much on the " # 2" spot comment.I would like to say that I find it highly doubtful that Serenity wouldn't get a sequal since it made # 2.....a movie that came out of nowhere, derived from a short lived tv series.

It's very rare for that to happen, especially when you add in the fact that there wasn't one big name actor in Serenity!

Investors in Hollywood will see that it broke 2nd place in it's opening weekend, notice the diehard fanbase, notice the amazing critical response for most major critics, notice the new fans(plenty that aren't usually into this genre of film),etc, etc, etc

if Universal doesn't fund it, another movie studio will.

I don't think it's being optimistic as much as it's me just connecting the dots and looking at the larger picture-- a picture that will be undoubtedly fleshed out in Joss's favor unless some paranormal evil force stops the process LOL

let's not forget that a large amount of films that had a production value of 60 + million , and returned a quarter or less in profit from worldwide theater revenues, received in upwards of 100 mill in the end through dvd sales

When Serenity arrives on dvd, you'll have the following.....

1.)huge amount of people that didn't bother seeing Serenity in the theater, but wanted to (mainly because most people don't bother going to the theater anymore for countless reasons)

2.)the Firefly/Serenity fans, and the new Serenity fans that viewed it in the theaters

3.) people that rent

4.) people that buy any old dvd with a cool cover

5.) people that will purchase the dvd instead of renting it(too many people do this, which I find to be a waste of money, but it helps sales)

it's impossible that, especially in light of Firefly having brisk dvd sales(and future ones from Serenity attention) that Serenity won't turn out atleast 60 mill in revenue on top of Box Office gross earnings which could very well reach 20 mill

80 mill-35 mill production=45 mill profit

explain to me again why they wouldn't make a sequal after making even 45 mill profit on a "risk"?

If we look at it pragmatically for a moment it might be a good thing to freak out. Maybe it doesn’t need great numbers, but it could sure as hell use them. If freaking out will make people go back to the movie and do everything in their power to convert others freaking out is good.

DVD sales are an unknown, it’s been reported that there were at least 2 million fans worldwide quite a while ago, yet the figure for DVD sales I’ve heard is half a million as of now, many of those were probably repeat buys, people buying copies to give to others that might not be willing to buy Serenity even if they were converted, hard as it may be to believe some of the people who were given the DVDs might not have been converted.

Will we have great DVD sales? We really don’t know.

Sometimes it is important to live in the present, and in the present Box Office numbers are what matter.

(Y'know, just as a quick aside, I've never really subscribed to the "buying is wasting" mindset. If, for the price of fourteen taxicab rides, I can buy the gorram taxicab itself, I don't think it's a waste, particularly when I plan to visit that same destination over and over at my leisure.)

But I really appreciate your post, it helps to repair my calmness considerably. Thanks for the reassurances.

........and Uwe Boll is on his 4th movie

which might I add has an all star cast

Uwe not only has a near 0% approval rating from both critics and users at Rotten Tomatoes, but House of the Dead sold over 1,000 copies

I'll also add that plenty of Box Office bombs within the past 5 years (I mean huge bombs) raked in millions each in just dvd sales alone

Your're just looking at the sales of Firefly, and skipping right over my point that Firefly is no longer a cute little short-lived tv series w/ a small following----by default.......there are now thousands of Serenity fans, regardless of whether they've seen one episode of Firefly or not

take an average action movie risk for the box office, with no former tv series and a cult following, and compare it to what I just said about Firefly/it's fans & Serenity/it's fans

if you combine the two, not only will Firefly dvd sales rise, but interest from both parties for a sequal will rise

lol, no man, I meant buying a dvd of a movie you've never seen before.Especially the people that just go by the cover for their purchase inclination.

go to BestBuy tomorrow and purchase 12 random dvds without reading the synopsis on the back of each.Watch them, and then discover that you only like 4 out of the 12, thus wasting money on paying for 8 extra movies that you'll never watch again because they suck

tell me you woudn't be pissed

You mean there are people who just buy handfuls of random DVDs blind, without even at least looking on both sides of the boxes? Yep, that'd be creepy indeed! They'd be lucky to hit 8 out of 12 (in the video stores in my neighborhood at least!).

Zippy

everyone, save for myself, in my family grabs any ol' movie when they rent or purchase(briefly glancing at the back and just looking for entertainment value on shallow terms)

99% of the people I've ever witnessed picking out movies in stores and rental places were the same way

your average person doesn't care about depth in anything, that's why there's a seperate community for indie films

Wow, that surprises me, so you can tell I'm not a "Movie Buff," at least in the pop culture sense. I don't consume enough "common" entertainment on a regular enough basis to do it that way: I usually have thought out (researched to some extent) what it is that I want to get before I go get it, whether it's a movie, or a book, or a magazine, etc, I've got something in mind.

Now that I think about it, I see what you're saying... As a former bookseller, I made a heck of a lot of money off of the "bestsellers," but didn't ever feel that Danielle Steele was, ummm, elevating the art form any more than "Independence Day" did for cinema. But mass consumption of that kind of stuff does put money in the cash register.
