Usually the first week of a new release, dvd's have a sale price at most places(Best Buy,Target, Circuit City)So I plan on buying 2 copies. Just think if all Browncoats do this. It will:
1. Be one of the best selling dvd's ever.

2.Enable you to enjoy your copy and let friends, and others borrow your other copy, much like the hardcore fans did w/ the Firefly series.

3. Please Universal, sequel anyone???

Just a thought!

I'd think about it more deeply than an arbitrary number. It would be nice if everyone got two copies, but maybe not everyone has a reason. Not everyone loans things out enough to justify a second copy. On the other hand some people might want to consider more than two.

Christmas/birthday presents are a very real possibility, if you know someone you think will like it, or already likes it but won’t buy the DVD on their own, give them a copy. If you know more than one such person give them each a copy.

In short buy what is right for you, if it is only one than do it, and if it is more than that for the love of god don’t buy less than you can use.

Well said, Chris.

I'll probably be preordering about 5 copies, when that becomes possible: four gifts and a personal copy.

What I'd really like is to get it in a high-def DVD format, which may be appearing around the same time the BDM is released. It would be fitting if my first Blu-Ray or HDDVD was Serenity.

Yes, I plan to order at least 2 copies of the DVD when it comes out. Maybe more, for gifts. Depends when it comes out, also birthday gifts.

Got the movie soundtrack, and I preordered the series soundtrack. Can't wait for Nov!

Now I just need to get my own Visual Companion.

SAGRILARUS

Have any of you considered a better place for some of the vast sums you're spending on this movie? Between tsunamis, hurricanes and earthquakes, something like one million people have been left homeless in the past year, completely wiped out of all possessions.

Universal isn't stupid. They know that they can't depend on repeat business for sequels. Short of coming up with $10 million additional dollars, you're not going to change the math appreciably. All the dollars you pump in are just going into the big vat in Hollywood that will be used to finance Deuce Bigelow III.

Make a difference somewhere.

My sentiments exactly!

I bought a total of 6 copies of the Firefly DVD set. Gave 4 out as gifts at Christmas & kept two for myself, one as a loaner the other stays at home.

When Serenity is released I will most likely buy at least 8-10 copies so I have them for gifts & a copy or two for myself.

NERVOUSPETE

'fraid I've got to side with SAGRILARUS here. It's been a terrible year for disasters and people need our help, so if you could fling 10-20 dollars their way (even better if you subscribe to a charity) then that would be peachy.

Also, there are so many other marginalised artists with wonderful things out there clamouring for attention. Dig around a little and you will find gold. There are also many other great stories, in book, DVD and record form and they deserve to be patronised. Don't get me wrong, I evangelise Firefly to everyone and will drag people to the stores to buy the DVD's, but unless you have bags of money - save the stuff for others - needy and creative.

For instance, go and buy Ultraviolet - a UK sci-fi series about vampires. It's on Amazon and it approaches the vampire mythos in a realist style, focusing on science and detective work. It's sort of the anti-Buffy, and while I love Buffy, I love Ultraviolet even more. There's only six episodes since the second series wasn't picked up, but it has an ending of sorts. (Now where have we heard that before?) It's hard, moving, and speaks a lot about the things that keep you awake at night - mortality, morality, humanity and loyalty.

Or pump the money into disaster relief funds. This world is getting more and more crowded, and I doubt a year will go by when some people won't be in a world of hurt.

Of course, if you do the above then feel free to splurge some extra cash on Serenity! You deserve it!

DATALESS

If you want to an extra copy to have that's cool but if you are hoping that it will get you another sequel than you are throwing money down a hole that Universal would love for you to do. I think they are or were placing all their plans (and Joss's and the cast's hopes) on the way the movie did. I think even if Serenity is the best selling DVD ever they would have to really think about making Serenity 2 because they went to the well that made them lose money (at this point, if the movie cost $80 Million.) So now The Execs at Univeral must suspect that they made a mistake and they must have a clue that we all must have bought at least 2 copies of the Firefly DVD set and that is why the movie must not have done as well as hoped. They would be right to think that.

If you plan to give the gift of Serenity be sure that he person wants it and would not think that you are just pushing it on them. I thik the best way to convince someone to be a fan if to have them watch it with you if they want to. To have to beg and pleed, is just work and it becomes work to watch if they don't really want to see it. Plus they just wouldn't enjoy it. If you want te copies that's cool but other than that it's a mistake. I know that some of you will say, "if we listened to that logic the BDM would never have been made." While that is likely true, we would have it in one form or another, Joss would never have given up.

I donated close to $100 for disaster relief, which is pretty good considering my budget. The main purpose behind the multiple copies is mainly for a copy to lend to friends, or give as a gift. There is nothing wrong with that in the least. I understand where your coming from, but your logic can be applied to anything, ("that movie your buying on dvd is no good in my opinion, give the money to charity instead") and it isn't right to assume all the fans of Serenity/Firefly are heartless, and self indulgent just becuase we buy an extra copy of the movie.

SAGRILARUS

I did not mean to imply that anyone is heartless. When discussions move to buying eight copies of the same film, I think it's appropriate to perform a sanity check on the decision.

zbs.org also produces excellent quality sci-fi. If you want to consider supporting the arts, this is an excellent non-profit to look into.

And the numbers from Pakistan are indicating 2.5 million homeless from the earthquake alone.

Sag.

I love that series. I remember watching it when it was on TV. The dvds are fantastic too. Good call.

I agree with the sentiments concerned but another reality check needs to be made. All the donations don't necessarily go to those who need it the most, especially when you hear first hand accounts of the crisis in Pakistan where food drops are being made but the only people getting the food are those who are the fittest and most able with nothing else being distributed to those who need it most. Why not donate to a charity directly associated with the relief effort who have personnel on the spot (such as the Red Cross) that way you can be re-assured that the money will go to a charity that directly helps those who need it most.

As far as buying multiple copies of the Serenity DVD are concerned, can you really trust an industry that cancelled Firefly in the first place to actually make the right call on this. I would love to believe that they would, but given some of the unmitigated crap that has come out on TV and on the big screen recently, I have my doubts. However, I am an optimist and hope that the right decision will be made.
