This tract is not intended to bum anyone out... just to express a specific frustration I am having with specific individuals I know and their apparent attitudes toward seeing Serenity on the big screen. It is very possible - actually likely - that I will change my mind by December.

------------------

I lost track of how many Firefly dvd sets I gifted out over the last two years. At least ten.. probably fifteen. My notion was the dvd set was newbie homework for the upcoming film and that each set would create a new fan and increase the chances of another soul word-of-mouthing the good 'Verse, etc. etc. I was sure to check up on these sets and their owners. Without fail, everyone enjoyed the series and asked me "why the f*ck did they cancel this show?!" I took that as a positive. Mission accomplished.

So, here's a dilemma I didn't expect I'd have to face:

Not every one of these wonderful folks who recieved a free Firefly dvd set from me has made it into the theater to see Serenity. It seems that, though excited to see the film, they are waiting for the dvd release. Or worse, they are waiting for a gift wrapped copy of Serenity from yours truly.

I feel like I have become some kind of Firefly enabler and that a certain percentage of my "converts" is failing to chip in their support for the cause. Which is fine. They certainly aren't obligated to. But it is for this reason that I have decided I will NOT be gifting the Serenity dvd as I have gifted the Firefly dvd set. It pains me to say that, but there you have it.

I wouldn't mind inviting a bunch of these folks to see the film (my treat!) but my willingness to financially support this franchise (other than on a personal level) ends once the film leaves the cinema.

Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOVE this franchise and I will talk it up and I will still loan out the dvd set. But I can no longer treat Firefly like a charity nor Amazon like a company I own stock in just to keep Firefly on the top 10 list. All of that is getting expensive. There are too many very important causes in the world that need financial support to help combat real suffering.

So I guess this is a plea to the new generation of Firefly fans... the second wave of Browncoats (or is it the third or fourth wave by now?): If you received the Firefly dvd set as a gift and/or a buddy of yours bought your way into the film, please pay that karma forward if you haven't already.
