I'm sure this has been discussed heavily but what if the BDM had a different title? Would the box office draw have been better? I believe it would have. I've talked to a lot of my friends and business associates that haven't even heard of "Serenity." When they hear the name, they think its a chick flick! These dudes have no interest just because of the title! No wonder the unwashed haven't taken a chance on it! What would be a better title, or is this topic sacrilege to a true Browncoat?

This was the title Joss chose. Therefore, it's the title that fits best, I honestly believe that.

It's not just the ship either, it could have a lot of meanings in the context of the narrative of the film.

My flatmate (who refused to see the movie, moron) said "Why didn't they call it Firefly: The Movie?" but he was just looking for complaints to make :P I'm assuming that Firefly couldn't be in the title anyway because FOX have the rights to Firefly?

In conclusion, the name rocks. Made it easy to have the title appear in-film as well :)

Maybe they could have given it a subtitle. Serenity: *something here*

I agree. Wonder if the sequel(if there is one} will be "Serenity II" or something like that? If a sequel is made, then the title obviously is perfect...

Yeah, I think so (that the title might be a problem). My thought was that if people saw the poster, they might think River's name was Serenity. SERENITY works as title for us because we see the double or maybe even triple meaning. But if you're just hearing the title I can see how people might not catch on that it's a fast-paced never-a-dull-moment Science Fiction movie.

But I gotta say this attitude from men (I'm a guy) that any movie that isn't overflowing with testosterone or gross-out humor is a "chick flick" and therefore not worth their time really pisses me off. So screw 'em. There is a middle ground between "Beaches" and "Doom".

ROFL!

I would certainly hope so! If not, I'd never get to the movies.

Obviously they should have changed everything.

The title: Raiders in Space

- Nicolas Cage as Malcolm Reynolds
- Uma Thurman as Zoe
- One of the Baldwins as Jayne (oh, wait -- never mind)
- Winona Ryder as River
- Jessica Alba as Kaylee
- Lawrence Fishburne as the Operative
- Angelina Jolie as Inara

Then maybe people would have gone to see it. I'm referring here to *people*, of course.

My first post was going to be more serious cuz I agree with the premise: The name "Serenity" only means something AFTER you've seen the movie (or the tv show) but doesn't tell nonfans much about what's in the film or what it's about. And then I tried to come up with "better" titles. Naming a movie is hard! Harder than my head, which now hurts from the exertion. So maybe it's a pretty good name afterall?

You're right, Serenity is a great title for us; but what does it mean to someone thats never heard of Firefly? Isn't that who needs to have his or her butt in the movie house?! I really would like a sequel or another series.

1. One word titles are always best.
2. Subtitles suck, and also make it sound like a sequel.

Take as example:

Terminator.

Now consider that instead you call it:

Robot from the Future.

Doesn't that suck more?

Now there's the subtitle combo:

Terminator: Robot from the Future.

Which still have more suckage than just Terminator.

Alien

or

Screams in Space

or

Alien: Screams in Space

Mabye you like a differnt one word title?

like

Gorramit.

Nah, I think Joss is right here. Serenity is the best title.

I'm going to kill them all. That oughtta distract 'em.

Serenity, certainly isn't a name that will capture a new audience.

However, everything about this movie and it's marketing is driven towards those already familiar with Firefly getting people to see it.

I can just see some of the posters on here who are already whining about how anything they don't like in the movie automatically means "Joss sold out to the Corporate Man" would have lost it if the movie title was set to something that would appeal to newcomers.

If Joss wanted more people to see it he could have made a media whore blockbuster. Cleary that's not what he's up to, if he was his named would have been changed to Bruckheimer.

I think if you really want to whore with the best, here's a tactic. How about taking one actor from every show that has 10 million or more viewers, and putting them in it under the theory that fans of each show will go to see it.

Now, going over to Wachowski land, we could include a meaningless viacom sponsored 15 minute dance scene in which people shake their asses at the camera. Maybe to "Crazy in Love" by beyonce. Ashley Simpson can lipsync, because after all, she'll be starring in the movie as "Fluffy" a character we added for the purposes of a gratuitous shower scene.

Now that we have out-whored Inara, we can think up an appropriate title for this monstrocity.

The Good, The Bad and the Really truly hideous.

or perhaps

Archvixens battle the mutant cannibal warriors of death.

I just think Serenity is a better movie than the numbers show. More people should see the BDM. It shouldn't be just for us browncoats...

Serenity is not a catchy title, and particularly a turnoff for 16-34 males because it sounds like a chick flick.

Those are legitimate issues. I have personaly talked to people whom when I mention the movie automatically think it's a romance movie, and even some people who know it's a sci-fi movie think it's a romance movie set in outer space.

How about "Spoutlaws!", or "Spgunslinger!", or "Spsmugglers!"

I hate to say this, but all seriousness think about the slogan. Most people agreed "The Future is Worth Fighting For" was vague and weak. But some of those words in the title might work in a generic sense and give people a more grounded idea as to what this movie is about. "Flightplan" at least gave the connotation that this had something to do with airplanes.

The words "future" and "fighting" might have conveyed something more specific than "Serenity".

Given Mal's attitude toward "progress", wouldn't "Fight the Future" have been a catchier title yet still have suggested something about the plot? Plus it would have a subliminal ring of familiarity to people because it sounds similar to "Fight the Power". I think it might have been noticed more.

Just a thought.
