My wife and I have each seen the BDM once, and we planned to go again this weekend. I've checked the internet movie times for a number of the theaters in our area (Pittsburgh, PA) and am chagrined to learn that although serenity is still playing NOW (thursday, October 12), when I move the date forward to saturday Serenity is no longer listed. Have I already lost the opportunity to see it again in my area, and are others noting the film already LEAVING theaters?

I noticed it being moved to smaller screens, but gone from theatres already? I hope not.

Edit: I just checked movie tickets . com and adjusted the date to tomorrow, seems it's still around, but theatres that had it on 2 screens just have it on one.

'Serenity' was in two theaters that were 30 miles away
(and those were the closest!)
tomorrow it'll only be in one, and even that one is cutting the number of showing per day from 4 to 2.

However in a theater that is 50 miles away
(a much bigger & nicer theater)
they are keeping 'Serenity' at a full 4 shows a day

With three new movies (Domino, Elizabethtown, The Fog) coming in taking up between 2,000-2,700 screens apiece, screens will be cut.

Here's how my local theater looks, sorted by number of showings gained or lost:

+8 Elizabeth Town
+8 The Fog
+4 Domino
NC The Gospel
NC Waiting
NC Greatest Game Ever Played
NC Serenity
NC Flightplan
NC History of Violence
NC Just Like Heaven
NC March of the Penguins
NC 40 Year Old Virgin
-1 Wallace and Gromit
-2 In Her Shoes
-2 Proof
-2 Constant Gardener (removed from theater)
-2 The Exorcism of Emily Rose
-3 Into the Blue
-3 Corpse Bride
-4 Two for the Money

So, Serenity keeps all 4 showings at my closest theater (a Regal). There's also a Regal that's just another mile or two further away from me in the other direction, and it's keeping all 4 showings of Serenity this weekend too. A check of a third theater that's about 10 miles away from my house (A Carmike) and it's keeping all 4 showings of Serenity for this weekend too. :)

I'll cross my fingers that many of you have similar luck.

In the Portland area (Oregon, not Maine), we're not losing any theaters outright, but those who had it on two screens will drop it to one, and some have trimmed a showtime off the schedules.

It will still be at the Loews Waterfront theatre this weekend, and that's a great theatre.
Send me a message if you don't know where it is.

All of our local theaters have dropped Serenity except one, which is a crappy 2-screen cinema in the middle of downtown where I live. It doesn't get nearly as much business as the other, more modern multiplexes in the area, and they all dumped Serenity like a bad prom date. I saw on another thread that serenity has dropped to 1700 screens. That's really gonna make it harder for people to see, and I fear the worst. I will probably go check it out a couple more times at the crappy theater its playing in. One good thing, they tend to hang on to movies for a real loooong time. How long? Let me put it to you like this: Serenity is showing on one screen, and The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson is still showing on the other.

If that number is true, I think it's not so bad - I actually expected quite a bit worse. I could see a number of good effects from that:

1) The ones that dropped it are probably the theatres it was performing worst at anyway... so the average take per theatre should go up (or drop at a lower rate).

2) The die-hard browncoats who are still seeing the movie again and again will congregate to fewer theatres, making those theatres more likely to keep it the next time they have a chance to drop it.

3) It's still a fair bit of theatres, especially with a lot of new movies coming in.

4) Maybe some theatres dropped it, but other ones picked it up, so people who otherwise didn't get a chance to see the movie because it was too far will suddenly have it at a nearby theatre.

Sad to say I just got a boxofficemojo.com email that confirms those numbers:
Serenity (Universal) / 1,700 (-489) screens
