Which one do you think you'll be putting in your DVD player more often?

[My answer: Serenity the movie. That one's got layers I haven't begun to peel yet.]

Which one will you show friends if they were willing to watch only one with you?

[My answer: Serenity the episode. It's a better representation of Firefly as a whole.]

Can't Take My Gorram Sky
I thought Joss was a doughy hack until I saw Serenity.

Hmmm it's a toughie.

One that'll be in my DVD player more often - the movie. I suspect I might watch the commentary (I guess that should be "listen to" :P) a couple of times.

Which one to show to friends? Almost definetely the movie too.

It's much easier to get someone to sit down for 2 hours to watch a single movie than if they are sitting down to watch the first ep of a TV show, and that's understandable. If they like the movie I'll recommend the series.

I agree about the layers of the BDM. I saw many things on the 2nd or 3rd viewings that I didn't see on the first. Some of these things I only saw because I was reading this site (thanks to all) and was looking for them on the repeat viewings. And, the dialog? As with Firefly (and to a lesser extent Buffy and Angel) I would like to repeat (or even subtitle) some of the dialog because I know that there are things that I didn't hear correctly or at all.

I just watched the Serenity Pilot again. I do love this episode. It has the Firefly fun rather than the BDM intensity. I almost think that too much is happening in the BDM, that it was too breakneck and it either should have been longer or had a simpler plot for its length.

I think the Serenity pilot lenght (approx. 1:25) is perfect for Firefly. Long enough to let us "luxuriate" in the 'verse but not so long that it has to be an epic. I've mentioned in a couple of other posts (that no one seemed to tweak to) that I think that this TV Movie length is perfect for Firefly and that I would like to see 6-8 TV Movies per year rather than another epic BDM.

Last weekend I persuaded some old friends to go to the BDM. The wife had been TIVOing the series from the SciFi channel but hadn't watched them, yet. The husband was a Firefly virgin.

They both liked the BDM, the wife more than the husband. I know she will go back and watch the series.

What I now ask myself is: Did I spoiler her for the series by showing her the BDM first?

Also, I would note the Serenity Pilot at approximately 1:25 is really a short movie. If they don't like this double episode, I don't think they will like 'verse.

Serenity pilot. I just like it more. Although I watched it after seeing the BDM and I tried to imagine what it would be like if it were a theatrical release. I don't think it would have worked. The pacing is too languid for a movie of this type and I think there would have been greater expectations of the action scenes (For instance I don't think the Crazy Ivan would have been a satisfactory resolution to the threat of Reavers in a big screen movie.).

But overall I think the pilot "clicks" more than the movie. Not that I won't be buying the BDDVD the day it hits the stands.

I agree: Serenity. I will be buying 2 copies; one to wear out, and a back-up. No joke!

It's like the difference between 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' and 'Star Trek The Motion Picture' (only Serenity's better than ALL of them put together!!!!!!!)

Chrisisall slobbering over Serenity: the extended cut on dvd (I hope)

I must say, i'd rather show them the BDM... cuz its so intense, they'll like it more (my friends have sort attention spans like me... except aren't inclined to sci-fi like me, so i need to give them action , lol)

Serenity movie. I like the episode and all, but come on! It has no Mr. & Mrs. Universe in it! ^_^

I'm surprised. Didn't you start a thread where you said you were disappointed? What changed your mind?

No, I started a thread that posed the IDEA that some were dissapointed; I wanted to hear if people thought the differences made it too different from the show to totally enjoy- I'm in the 'It's my favourite movie of all-time' camp, it's right up there with Blade Runner for me.

Chrisisall, who might get the full-frame also, just to have every version

I agree completely, Batmarlowe. I liked the movie, and I want to see it a second time, and will definitely watch it over and over on DVD, but I liked Firefly. I liked the western feel, I liked the joking around, and I especially liked the focus on the crew themselves. I was actually hoping the movie would be a lot more like the pilot, though I can also see why it couldn't be.

I could see where the next movie would be more like the series- they had to tell a powerful story first time out to get new audience, after that, they can be more choosey about the stories they want to tell.

Chrisisall, humble in the presence of Joss.
But actually NOT so humble; I've never been in Joss' presence....

I'll be grabbin' 4 off the shelf:

1 for me,
1 for my mom,
1 as a backup,
and 1 to play in the breakroom's DVD player at work.

Yeah, it really is all about the crew. I know the movie had to be both bigger in scale and bigger in its ideas.

But I sure would have liked to have seen them all gathered around that kitchen table at least one last time.
