Man, I can't get over that last part of "Out of Gas" where Mal sees Serenity for the first time.

I can't say beautiful because it doesn't have perfectly sleek lines, but the first time I saw it, I immediatly thought of a peregrine falcon carrying a box. It speaks to me as an attempt to merge utility and grace. The cargo bay is the heart of what the ship is, but it was designed well around it.

Just my $0.02

Nice thread Jubellate. I felt the same way in Out of Gas. And every time Firefly's - pardon my French - *ss lights up, I just get a thrill.

Beatiful ship, yes, and a remarkable concept by Joss too. Combining the design with the name Serenity and you can hit on all kind of life philosophy themes and images of a better world.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I couldn't agree more!

I liked it so much I am creating a mosiac of it. I have gold glass tiles for the engine light and metal tiles for the ship.

Costs a fortune but she should look very nice.

I am totally in love with this ship...
I've always wanted to go explore the world by going out on a freighter (who really wants to bum around the world on a destroyer? Or a cruise liner? what is the romance in that?)...
the very rough ordinariness of it makes it seem familiar, and believable.

One of my favorite moments is in the pilot episode when Mal uses the 'bathroom' in his quarters...how cool is that drawer set up?! perfect use of space, the simplicity of it blew me away.

I love that Serenity is just for transport and hauling cargo, nothing fancy...no fighting (so the crew has to learn to avoid the fighting, as much as possible).

The ship is beautiful because she fulfills the fantasies of being everything you need,
everything that is useful and practical.
Serenity represents freedom and independence
(she is my favorite character on the show & the movie).

I haven't watched TV since Babylon 5 ended, so my first glimpse of Serenity was as an add-on, created by Jon Marcure, for the freeware spaceflight simulator Orbiter...
http://www.orbitersim.com

I remember thinking, "Ewwwww! What the hell's that supposed to be? The aerodynamics're for shit!"

When the first trailer for Serenity came out, I went and bought the Firefly DVD... and it wasn't long before Serenity became my all-time favorite spaceship!

Oh, and Jon Marcure's retrofitting his "Ought-Two" Firefly (of the type that "didn't have the extenders & tended to shake"), into a proper "Ought-Three"...

Serenity is function and form to perfection; and therein lies its beauty. When the rear end lights up, then you know its a Firefly. Kudos to the to the artists that designed her.

I think some truely beautiful ships are the designs for the Naboo ships in Star Wars. Those are the ultimate in sleek lines.

Carry on!

Well I can say beautiful because I think she is. Inside and out I love that ship.

In fact I would love to live in her and should I ever come into insanely (obscenely) large amounts of money (I won’t) I’d like to build her. I can just imagine her in the middle of a field somewhere the cargo bay is the garage, waking up every morning and climbing up the stairs, eating in her dining area, and enjoying every moment of it.

I don’t need a huge house, nor do I want one, a cozy and functional place is perfect for me, and she is that. Of course if I ever get obscenely rich there’s also a hotel in Florence I’d like to buy just so I can live in one of the suites without worrying about being kicked out. (God I loved that room, a stone spiral staircase in a hotel room, fully stocked kitchen, two bathrooms, leather furniture, a location close to all of the great sights to see, various other things.)

People build exact replicas of various rooms from various versions of the starship Enterprise, but it’s not remotely efficient to live there. What’s the purpose? To be able to walk around to ooh and ah? A nice thing I admit, and one I would envy, but not something I would build myself. The Enterprise bridge with its big screen TV sounds very nice, but I think I’d prefer the Serenity bridge which can function as an enclosed balcony.

The outside of Serenity is just beautiful, and the inside is something you rarely see in sci fi: a home.

Anybody else notice that the ship had a small part in the new Battlestar Galactica pilot/miniseries. The Serenity can be seen through a window landing on Caprica in an effects shot just before we meet Mary McConnell`s character for the first time.

I personally think Serenity is not only a beautiful ship, but functional looking and aerodynamic as well. I've been told she's ugly by others, but I don't see that at all. There's SOMETHING about the look of that ship that looks sleek, hopeful, and comforting all at the same time.

I would love to also see a model of the ship as well.

Very similar to the designs used on cargo narrow boats (where the toilet and sink fold/pull out)and romany horsedrawn caravans where space is vital.
Anyone know if there are any news of a Serenity model currently in the planning?

To me Serenity has her own personality. She's not like so many ships in sci-fi that are blank and at best could be described as functional.

Someone else mentioned that she has a bird like shape to her and I totally agree, that's the first thing I thought when I saw the pilot episode.

I think she's one of the Whedonverse's greatest characters. Anyone else cringe when she gets all bashed up?

when they deface the beloved ship to get past the Reavers,
I didn't need Zoe to say it to feel heart broken that Mal would do that to Serenity...
but that is part of the whole point,

she keeps the safe, and keeps them together

I love it too, and i'd have to say it's my favorite character of the show as well.

It's intereseting to see the different exterior versions the ship from episode to episode. I'm not too fond of the initial version, the one on the cover of the DVD set. It's kind of "primative" looking. Luckily it wasn't used too much in the show. The newer one is much better looking. I love it. I'm really hoping someone makes a model kit for it. I'll buy several.

I love Serenity, I would LOVE to live on her. That is the difference.... I wouldn't love to live on the Enterprise, I wouldn't love to live on Galactica. Serenity is home, it says so in her name. She is a lovely ship. Made more beautiful because the crew, especially Mal loves her so.

I gasped when she was all banged up, but I loved watching as the crew put her back together and repainted her name.

I reckon she'll miss Wash.... as will we all.

I grimaced when she crashed. Serenity reminds me of the kind of love you have for an old car you might have owned that looked a bit worn but always got you where you needed to go and got you back home again. Kinda like an old Dodge slant six I had decades ago. She never let me down and got me through blizzards and torrential rains and always got me where I needed to go. When she died it was peacefully in the garage after many years of faithful service. Serenity's the kinda ship that instills that affection and makes it more than just a mere machine.

I was just talking about how much I love her today after I saw the movie again. When I was younger, I used to think that the Defiant from Deep Space Nine was the prettiest ship out there, because she had a personality and she was functional and not pretty in the way that the other Star Trek ships are pretty. She was pretty because she could do her job, get down and dirty and do things that the big luxury liners (like the Enterprise) couldn't do. But even she wasn't home. Serenity is beautiful because she is part of the crew in ways that even the Defiant wasn't. Sisko could never love the Defiant like Mal loves Serenity. And the characters in Firefly are so much more human than the ones on Star Trek, so when they love something, we can connect to them, and feel that love too.

Also, I love that there's no sound in space, and that Serenity uses three dimensions, and goes up and down and sideways and upside down and every which way, like you would in space, not just in two dimensions like in Star Trek. She's special because she's so much more real.

That, and she's just plain pretty.

That's because, to Sisko, the Defiant is just a tool that he uses to accomplish his goals, to do his duty.

To Mal, Serenity is what saves his soul and makes him want to go on living.

That's a whole other level.

JubelLate and fellow 'coats:

For me, the greatest thrill in the movie is the first time we see Serenity (opening shot of second scene, if I recall correctly).

My heart swelled with pride -- as a from-the-first-episode Firefly viewer -- to see her on screen again, against all odds. My heart filled to bursting as the soft music increased in tempo to a Highlands 'reel' and she began to slip into reentry burn. And then a piece of her flew off... That's our girl!

Not many have said it: The music in the movie is fantastic. It retains the feel and characteristic of the original series. The accompaniment of Serenity's big screen debut on that retro burn was perfect, in my opinion. The music showed the viewer who she is; it emphasized ('underscored') her essential nature. Serenity is a frontier woman: she's got grit, determination, is fiercely committed to family, and not afraid of hard work. Who wouldn't love her?

Serenity's more than a ship. Next best comparable inanimate object raised to human character would probably be The African Queen, and she's a distant second in my book. (NB: Tho' ya gotta love her rising from a watery grave to torpedo the German warship and save newlyweds Charlie and Rose.) I wonder if JW is a fan of old Bogart movies? There's a few parallels between Charlie and Mal...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
Anybody got an MP3 of the accoustic "Ballad of Serenity" played at the very end of the credits? I want that for my cell ringer...

I have always thought that Serenity was a very pretty ship, but I didn't realise how much she had become ingrained in my consciousness as the '10th member of the crew' until the moment in the movie where she almost (spoiler alert!) doesn't make it. Not much to look at, but DAMN that thing ran. Started every time you turned the key...and only broke down on me once...in my driveway (very considerate).

It had about 300,000 miles on it when we sold it to a pizza delivery driver, who had it going for another 4 years before she died.

At first, I didn't really like the outer design (especially with the thrusters on the extenders), but now I get teary-eyed whenever I see her because she's so beautiful. I guess that's love for you.

I loved the interior right away - especially the space in front of the infrimary, so cool.
I dunno about the ladders to the bunks, though. Cool, but sort of impractical. I'd feel kinda trapped.

I've mentioned this before:

THERE ARE TWO SERENITY's

The one we see in the opening credits and the episodes up to "Safe" is quite different to the ship we see in the othere episodes and the movies.

Take a look: http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=SUNA,S

The first one is the one the later one, but the third one is what we see in the opening credits. Zoic you nutty people

But yes Serenity is my favorite ship next to TOS Enterprise. She's not preatty, not that fast, but i hope she doesn't change (and River doesn't crash her )

Spaced said it earlier.

Serenity is home. Not just a ship or a tool to get a job done.

No other sci-fi that I've seen has a ship with a crew living on it and that has that lived in, personal touch look.
Kaylee's touches, the chairs and tables, everything has a personal touch to it.

The Falcon only served as a way to get about.
Star Trek ship were too military, too clean cut (I imagine Alliance ships are like these).
Most ships are only there for transport of some kind even if they have accomadation.
Serenity only makes short stops before heading out again, most of the crew time is on the ship.

Anyway, Serenity is not pretty. She's SHINY!!!

I think Serenity is a beautiful ship, inside and out, for so many reasons.

Seeing her decked out as a Reaver ship in the movie made me wince, and seeing her get all banged up broke my poor little Browncoat heart.

Then again, seeing her take flight again at the end just made me smile and get all misty.

I just love Serenity-it's like the old, tramp steamers of the 1940's. You know it's home to the crew and the crew is like family-they will do anything to protect each other.

The room I'd most like to have is the galley and dining area and especially the wooden table. It's the main living area. All the crew gathers there several times a day and where the life of the ship just humms.
