oh..purpose. Yeah. Well, my point was just that Reavers used to be scary. Now they're just so much fodder.

DRAMAKING

Well you have something of a point. But just because an enemy has been overcome doesn't make them any less scary.

Imagine the crew without River against the Reavers....

Any further stories with Reavers should expand on their bloody and death dealing nature.

If every story about them has a member of the crew die, that would be a pretty lame way to thin the ranks.

They must be overcome, but they can still be scary.

I actually found Reavers scarier in the movie than in the series, which is odd because I thought it would be the reverse.

Watchin' em get mowed down like tall grass didn't really make them scary for me. Just louder.

Well, there is a correlation between Orcs and Reavers, in that once upon a time were both normal types of beings, the Reavers men, the Orcs tainted elves. What tainted them is what's truly important.

Honestly though, I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Just trying to add something to the thread...

i think the point of the reavers though is that they're human enough to be mowed down indiscriminantly, but they're insane enough not to care. so thier true threat is in the fact that they willing turn themselves into fodder in order to overrun the enemy. It's like Aliens, where yeah, you manage to gun down a hundred of them, but they've got five hundred more who are just made more angry and more willing to be mowed down in order to eat your tasty insides.

The reason Reavers are scary is the fact that just one ship of them managed to do all the damage that they did against the crew of Serenity.

The reason Reavers are NOT AS scary now as they were before is because previously we knew nothing about them. For all we knew they were actually aliens or (as I had believed was a parallel to the Sam Neil flick Event Horizon) they had been to the end of the universe and what they saw there had driven them utterly insane. The truth, as learned in the movie, is frightening in it's own way, but it isn't as mysterious or supernatural.

The bottom line is that the mystery is solved, and it was in the mystery that the true horror of the Reavers lay.

Thing about Aliens is that the Alien was a hell of alot scarier in Alien than in Aliens. Reavers were never seen in the series, and even the one guy who became a Reaver dispatched a fair few people single handedly.

Seeing your enemy being cut down in droves, whether there's a million more to fill their place or not, makes them less of a threat.

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you Beeeer Milkshakes!
