What a rollercoaster two weeks. In the last 14 days I heard about the movie, discovered Firefly, watched the DVD set, my wife and I fell in love with the show, and then (cue screeching tires) came the sudden realization that...

That's it. The journey's over. Everything's gone and there's nothing else but a void.

Sure we had one episode left on the DVD set, and we're going to see the movie tomorrow. But all I felt was this sick sinking feeling, like "what now?" I just couldn't help wishing I had never discovered the show.

Then we watched the final episode tonight, and the lightbulb went on:

We're the bounty hunter. Out there drifting through the nothingness. "Well, here I am." And I immediately felt better because now I know I'm not alone: We're all twisting out there in the void. We all feel the same way, or have felt that way, about this show - including Whedon and the others who poured so much into it. What's more, I know Whedon would be happy because I "got it."

Yeah, it still sucks, but at least I know we're all in this together. That thought is so cathartic. So I just wanted to say "thanks" - to whoever who can hear - to the people who made the show and to all of you.... for, urm, suffering, I guess.

Off to drift. And go see a movie.

Cub:
For what it's worth, I completely relate. Been a fan since the DVDs came out in my home country (Australia)... I know that sense of loss at coming to the end of the stories (for now at least).

keep flying.

I think your right. Whether a Browncoat from the beginning, or fresh out the womb, we all feel like Earlys. We're all hoping Serenity will come back round and rescue us from the void.

boy everyone is so glum
there is another funerial post on the board all about NEVER

This show has been canceled
and the fans didn't go anywhere
we aren't going anywhere NOW!

there will be comics,
and eventually there will be a sequel.

I say with the complete certainty of knowing that Joss has been writing the sequel in his head;
he WILL get it made.
In another two years Universal will decide that plenty of DVD sales warrent a sequel...

OR Joss will decide that he can make a straight to video for $7 million (he talked about that possibility immediately after the TV show was cancelled, the comment is in the current SFX magazine).

But I would just tell everyone to cheer up, enjoy the comics as they come out and keep coming back here to fireflyfans
it is not shutting down (unless of course no one supports the site...).

Don't forget novels from pocketbooks, em!
And yeah, dvd rentals and sales will be up there with Pitch Black, a sequel can be done if Joss wants, especially after Wonder Woman.

FRET NOT, BROWNCOATS!

The impossible CAN be done again Chrisisall

this is the thing: it took Star Trek ten years to build into a franchise...
now sure, somethings have been faster...
but it doesn't have to be.

Firefly/Serenity only disappear if we walk away,
Joss will continue to care about his ship & crew,
so personally I'll be here
I'll be paying attention and wanting to hear more stories.

But Chrisisall: I'm not too sure about the novelizations (LOL)

Yeah, very nice post. I think this feeling is why so many of us feel compelled to share Firefly and Serenity with others...despite the inevitable pain it will bring them! It brings us comfort to make that connection with other people and share that experience. It fills the void.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site & the fandom Cub.

There is not a person here that doesn't relate to what you are talking about. I have been a fan since the day the first episode aired. A lot of us here were there for the dark days when we were on the bubble of cancelation, then we were cancelled & looking for a new home, the campaigns to save the show, etc, etc.

It has been an emotional ride with lots of ups & downs, but having discovered Firefly I would do it all again without hesitation.

If you want to help insure we have a future, introduce the show & the movie to every single person you know. We need to boost ticket sales for the film & make everyone we can aware of the show to grow the fanbase.

Now that's some prime pain. It must be amazing to see how the fans have multiplied, especially lately. I'm guessing there's a lot less void in the void these days.

This is the last few days the movie will be in theaters here (we have six movie theaters in town, and only one got it - and only two shows a day! Meanwhile Into the Blue's on like every 15 minutes.) But I've already bought six Firefly DVD sets to give out at Christmas to family and friends who live everywhere across the Southeast from Atlanta to Florida to Tennessee. Then of course they'll all buy Serenity on DVD when it comes out.

Oh I will spread the misery. And I know the movie's release has created a lot of people like me. This thing's only gonna get bigger.

America loves a winner!

That was real nice. Your ride was considerably shorter than most everyone else here, but still amazing none the less. The DVDs are great to rewatch, as there's always more little things to catch each time, and because it's just so darn good.

There's the comics ( ok, graphic novels ) , but those take weeks to get in the mail, and to be honest, they're not all that long.

But yes, it's been a heck of a ride. Hope to see her fly some more.

Thanks for coming aboard.

It surely has been very heartening to see how rapidly the fanbase has grown since the first announcement of the movie right up to its release.

It's all we can ask of you, and nothing less than anyone can expect from any of us.

Keep spreading the word & the fanbase will keep growing. You can't stop the signal. Universal will see that soon enough.

That's my point!

People want to give up before it has even started to end. Some say it is lost, and I say it is time to start fighting...some more!
