Hey, everybody, just spotted this rundown of the BDM’s box office so far and an analysis over on Whedonesque. I think it’s worth reading:

Total Gross - 27,458,266

Converted to USD.

If we can make another 3 million by the end of the month world wide we might have a movie they will eventually term a sleeper hit. The hard part now is to keep going to the cinemas and bring people with you. We need to at least keep the number of patrons up at the large multiplex this will give us the best chance of keeping it there in order to bring in those casual movie goers whose curiousity might be peaked enough if the movie stays on a bit longer. Plus take your friends and while waiting in line for popcorn or to have your ticket taken, talk about Serenity in a voice that is just loud enough to be overheard by others, cause nothing will make people more curious about a film than accidentall overhearing a lively conversation about it, also while talking about it drop some lines that made you laugh. Doing this on a Friday or Saturday night is a good place to plant the seed of curiousity and remember to mention the name of the film often.

The only problem here is that with low turnout in the US this past weekend, Serenity will no doubt be dropped by many more theaters come this Friday. So… we need to get to theaters this week and keep the numbers up. It might convince the managers to hang onto the film for a while longer. Plus, it may be your last chance to see the BDM on the big screen if it’s dropped from theaters near you this weekend. So, get out there now and enjoy it while you can. We make this qualify as a “sleeper hit” and we won’t have rely on DVDs as much when it comes to getting a sequel. It’s been a slow, nasty slog, but keep at it, Browncoats! We need to hold as long as we can, and that means hitting the theaters during weekdays this week.

just read this off of boxofficemojo in its analysis of last weekend's box office returns...

"Meanwhile, Serenity burnt off 57 percent of its business, landing at 12th place with an estimated $2.3 million. Despite a supposedly dedicated fan base, the $39 million space western has performed like a below average genre picture."

what's up with this "supposedly dedicated fan base"? me--i'm going for my fourth show this week, and brining in a newbie or two. i too expect that theaters will drop serenity in favor of upcoming crap like doom, unless more people (uh, like us) go back and show our support in numbers.

I agree that that was a really unfair statement...
IF 'Serenity' had opened during the summer then I think a lot of kids would have been going to see it multiple times, like they did w/Star Wars Sith Thingy,
but by opening during the Fall when kids are in school it makes the box office slower...
for everyone!

When you look at how many movies are still around after 3 weeks, you can see we are only being beaten by 'Flightplan' and 'History of Violence' and maybe 'Corpse Bride' (altho that last was expensive to make and need to make a lot more money than 'Serenity' does)
most films are opening with low box office and disappearing within one to two weeks...
seems to me that 'Serenity' has done decent business at a time when no one is doing great business.

I wasn't able to make it to the theater this weekend, but FINALLY four of my friends went to see the BDM!!

Of the four, one has seen the series (he's one I converted) the rest had never seen the show before.

Three of the four LOVED the movie. One didn't get it (but she didn't hate it, and had never seen the series...)

I'm just so glad they finally saw the movie! Now I can start using quotes at work and they'll know what I'm talking about!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think that what the so called author of this quote does not understand is the the "fanbase" IS dedicated, more than they know. The low box office numbers are a result of Serenity being a sci fi film, the fact it was released in a month that is notoriously low for the box office, lacks big Hollywood names to draw the celeb chasers, and that 'Versal relied heavily on a viral marketing campaign.

It is not a shortcoming of the fanbase at all that the BDM is not breaking any records.

Pay no attention to the author. They aren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling.

I've been working on my co-workers since opening weekend. A few were already fans and have seen it. This week another co-worker and her husband are going (probably tomorrow night) and one is seeing it for a second time. I work in a small office, but most of them have seen it now.

Everyone seems to like it. I always tell them that if they like it they should tell all their friends about it. Most do. It's a slow process though.

I printed out a flyer and put it on my office wall and have a Serenity wallpaper on my work computer. My enthusiasm has sold a few tickets. Wish I could do more.

Never fear, I'm taking my friend and maybe a couple of his buddies to see it this weekend. He's never heard of it but I've convinced him to come with me. (Will be the second time I'll be seeing it) I'll be showing him my Firefly DVD box set before we set off too.

I've got a friend whose blazing through the DVDs that I'll probably be taking this weekend(my 6th time).
Just remember what was said at the BDM's end:

"Storms getting worse."
"We'll pass through it soon enough."

well I'm thrilled to see that 'Serenity' is NOT losing any ground this weekend,
we'll be in as many theaters, with as many showings as last weekend...
which is GREAT news!

IMO 'Doom' is not competition,
and most of the movies from last weekend should just disappear
(not 'Wallace & Gromit', but I'm thinking that 'Shoes' and 'Elizabethtown' and 'The Fog' will just drop pretty quickly)
heh heh...I just saw an ad for 'Elizabethtown'
calling it the 'date night film of all town'
(in other words a film only a teenaged girl could love)

okay, sorry...I shouldn't be sneering at other movies...
I'm really just posting because I am so happy that 'Serenity' is around for another week! YAY!
