Recently some Serenity fans bought a full page "thank you" ad in Variety (verrrry classy I might add..) and we are about to go into the Golden Globe and Oscar season... all those "For your Consideration" ads start appearing... could we not band together and buy a "For your Consideration" ad for Serenity and recommend Noms in Scoring, Fx, art design (Serenity is awfully beautiful, you gotta admit), costume???

Nothing says THANK YOU and nothing says SEQUEL like a SHINY gold statuette... I'm just askin'

and you think?????

Hmmm...

Not a bad idea, methinks...

I'd volunteer immediately to help you out but... I just happen to be absurdly broke this month... maybe not next month.

The show is February and it's strictly a popularity contest between voting members of all the relevant guilds - Best Actors are voted on by SAG members, etc. ...and I can attest that this show is popular in Hollywood (where "voting members" of the Academy live)

Anyway, I agree with you: this film is very pretty... ("...just look at our chiseled jaws...")

:-):-):-)

I think we all pool together.. the bigger problemo is I am not artistic.. so some creative type would have to contribute their talents..

also.. it's more about advertising to the studio... the ads have to go out sooner rather than later. Winning would of course be a HUGE PLUS but having H'weird see how big and devoted and shiny the fan base is.. well, that might be worth a lot- nomination/win or not...

having said all that.. the score, art direction, costumes and fx are all credible and could WELL compete with what all else is out there..

thanks for responding.

DREAMTROVE

Not a chance on the acting or directing. The acting was of course spectacular, as was the directing. But the academy is an tightass, and is only going to reward a touching drama about how a child with downes syndrome overcomes her life's setbacks of being locked in the minifridge of a trailer for thirteen years to become a warhero who singlehandedly defeats the viet cong as they attempt to kill an old english guy.

They don't ever away sci-fi regardless of how good the acting or directing is. They figure sci-fi can be relegated to the geek section, and be given best special effects, best sound effects, or best editting. In spite of some tremendously successful efforts, they never seem to feel that best costume design should go to sci-fi. Strangely, they don't seem to ever look at the costumes at all. They just seem to have been so moved by the victory over trisomy 21 that they just start chuck statues at the filmmakers.

Golden Globe Awards often influence the Oscars,
and they are chosen by the foreign press...

I would think that Serenity's reception at the Edinburgh Film Festival would bring some attention,
and I hope that the Sao Paulo Film Festival also helps:
http://www2.uol.com.br/mostra/29/p_exib_filme_483_en.shtml

I'm glad Serenity has been opening around the world, because that should stir some interest...
but I don't know what else could be done to specifically get the foreign press to consider Serenity

Agreed...

the Academy's voting actors are noTORiously stodgy and traditional (are ya listenin' fellas?). I can't tell you how many copies of GREAT movies (like "Natural Born Killers") I was given by SAG voting members who just couldn't stoop to see "something that ... foul..." ...whatever it was...

However, Chingi has an escellent point: the soundtrack ROCKED!

Does anyone know WHO put the ad in the recent Variety??? Maybe we could enlist their help..

I got some xtra $$$ and I like the grassrootiness of it.. and you are so right about GG being foreign press... the time to strike is soon...

even a nomination in one of the previously mentioned categories is good for the film and all involved.. and yes indeed, why not screenplay????

BALLAD

I would LOVE it. I wish I could contribute some cold hard cash to buying some ads (but being a poor college student, no). I'm holding out hope for the Golden Globes and maybe some of the technical categories for the Oscars. But, as previously stated, the "Biggies" like acting, directing and (gasp) Best Picture will never ever go to a sci-fi film. Then again, two years ago, I said that about fantasy films and ROTK swept the night...sooo...I've had to eat my words before. And if I have to do it again about Serenity (something I love WAY more than I could ever love LOTR...as much as I love LOTR) I will gladly pour on the hot sauce and eat up with glee.

This is all true, but it's only been a couple years since "Lord of the Rings" proved to be the exception. And while the third film was the big winner, all three films were heavily nominated. A nomination alone, even if it's not a winning one, is nothing to sneer at.
In fairness, however, I think LOTR was a bit of a fluke, and the Oscar tradition will continue. If a sci-fi / fantasy film from this year were to mix it up a little, though, my early prediction would be that "King Kong" will gather a bit of attention.
Nonetheless, it's nice to hope that "Serenity" gets some recognition. I think that the movie's best shots at nominations are in the cinematography and writing categories, as well as costume design. The fx dep't. will have a hard time competing with some of the big budget movies of the year, and while the scenic design of the film is amazing, the politics-over-quality mindset of the academy may be put off by the fact that the film's primary set piece, however innovative and spectacular it may be, is essentially lifted from a TV show. But "lifted from a TV show" offers up an interesting question - does "Serenity" qualify for Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay? One thing working in the movie's favor is that the Allian... er... I mean Academy may want to reward a big movie that was filmed in California.
ANYHOW... to address the original post about the ad in Variety, please keep in mind that how studios handle this kind of marketing of their properties is something they do very carefully and take very seriously. Something we absolutely don't want to do is upset Universal, so please contact a Uni rep before taking out such an ad and ensure that they approve of the effort (they will likely place a similar ad themselves.) You may also want to make a point of indicating in the ad that the ad was created and funded by fans not affiliated with Universal. As far as I know, a fan-made "for your consideration" ad is completely unprecedented, and I have no idea what sort of affect it would have on voters.

excellent point... the hope would be to support the film and Universal.. not to stick a thorn in the paw of the studio...

well, maybe if they troll these boards they will get the idea..

then again.. unprecedented and FREE to the studio.. may have some appeal too.. and may garner some (OH NO) publicity...

still it bears rumination I reckon

Matrix won best visual FX in 99, and LOTR swept the charts practically... Sci-Fi and Fantasy hasn't done good at the Oscars, but it has happened...

I might be wrong here but Star Wars was nominated for best picture, best screenplay, best director and a won quite a few "smaller" ones. I think if anything it deserves best screenplay. I'll help out anyway I can. I'm not sure of the effect an ad might have either, but what the hell.

In a perfect world, Serenity'd will em all. But that ain't happening. But in MY world, Serenity'd at least be nominated for:

Original Screenplay
Original Score
Editing
Costuming
Visual Effects
Production Design

and of course, Best Lead Actor (for our Mr. Reynolds)

Well I know the folks at the official site message board were planning an ad, but I don't know if this was theirs.

I have been meaning to ask if any Oscar noms would help with a sequel in real terms. I know we all think so but do we have any industry types around who could speak to this?

PS: Isn't "chindi" Navajo for spirit?

Wouldn't it have to be "Adapted Screenplay" since it was based on a previously produced project (alliteration!)?

As far as acting goes, I feel both Nathan AND Summer should get nods.

They were brilliant, I thought!

First night watching, I was thinking "I wonder if this could get Oscar nominations?"

It would be great if we got some Golden Globe awards!!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I would say the odds are against us winning any awards, but hell, when have the odds not been against us?

I would gladly donate cold hard cash to a "For Your Consideration" ad in Variety. If anyone decides to organize such a campaign, post a thread here @ FFF.net & I'll contribute.

OK.. this is most encouraging fellow travellers.. we really DO need an industry insider to tell us if we would be pissing the Studio off to do such an ad (then we would factor that into our final decision!! LOL)

We got someone who has offered to do the artwork- MOST shiny, and thanks...

I am SURE we can pull together enough $$$.

I will check on ad prices and post later- if ANYONE has industry contacts... or if Joss or anyone connected is reading... let us know if we would be doing more harm than good.. otherwise, I think we mean to misbehave!

As for the areas for consideration... Hell, I say we list all that apply.. but know that IF we got noms, they would likely NOT be in the sexier (tho well deserved) areas...

I think I hear the happy sound of little feet in combat boots dancing away!

Stay tuned....

Chindi

(which is a spirit of sorts.. tho somewhat malicious in the tradition.. one that definitely misbehaves.. well spotted.)

ETA: One time ad prices range from $8,000.00 for a full page to $2,600.00 for 1/4 page. This is B&W only. Price goes up for color of course.

1/2 page costs $4800.00

Slaythis,

Excellent point. I considered LOTR before making my post, but I decided it had become academy canon fodder. Everyone voting in the academy now would have had the books as kids, or at least young adults, and so they would classify as "Literature." In addition, Pete Jackson filmed it in a manner that was more in keeping with Mechant/Ivory than with Dead Alive. This makes it more epic, and more the sort of thing they might reward. Narnia will have the same advantage. Firefly has its origins in Bebop/Outlaw and thus is from a high geek sci-fi subgenre which dates back to the late 90s. Most of the Academy's members will probably not have seen any of this until they get their copy of Serenity, and they'll look at it and think "That was kind of weird."

It would be interesting if they would create age category voting. Like, this is the award for movies that Dakota Fanning liked. :) But you get my point, if the 18-24 crowd got to vote, it would produce some different results.
