Firefly vs. Serenity technical / production comparisons

So, after a night to sleep on Serenity, I have a few topics I wanted to bring up about the production of the movie vs. the TV show.

1.) The color palette. Seems as though the tv show had such a warm, earthy coloring to it. The movie however, had a cold and almost sterile feel to the way the colors worked. Lots of blues and greys. Maybe it's just the way it looked on the big screen. This isn't a complaint, just an observation. Maybe it was done intentionally to illustrate the shift in tone of the story.

2.) The Serenity ship seemed very different. I was under the impression that Joss had preserved the sets and re-used them, but after seeing the movie, it looked as though they re-constucted a lot of the set. The cargo bay and mess hall especially looked different to me. Also, the engine room seemed a lot smaller. This is actually somewhat of a complaint on my part. I didn't like how a lot of the set changed.

3.) The music. What happened to all the sweet slide guitar and fiddle music? Seemed like they stuck with more of a standard sci-fi orchestral sound track as opposed to our beloved old-west mixed with world music fusion from the show. I was a bit dissapointed that we didn't hear any incarnation of the Firefly theme either.

Overall, great production and effects though. Considering how they had a relatively small budget to work with, they did an amazing job.

Overall, of course, there was a change in the color palette because we saw a lot more Alliance locations. Imagine if the show were all like "Ariel," with lots of scenes in the hospital. I assume, though that you mean that even familiar locations (like inside Serenity) looked colder. I think this is kind of true. Partly, it IS the difference between the big screen and a TV. Partly, I suspect, it eas Joss wanting to show a lot on that big scrfeen at once. Deep dark shadows, which he's used a lot before, don't tend to show a lot.

The original sets were destroyed. They DID have to re-buiild Serenity. I think some of the dimensions were "spread out" a bit, to accomodate wider shots (especially the cargo bay and mess hall (and bridge?). With a whole new set, we also just saw angles that we weren't used to (especially on the bridge), which showed stuff we hadn't seen (because it wasn't there) on the old set. Conversely, I think there was stuff missing/shrunk, too. The infirmary looked smaller and we only ever saw one bedroom (Mal's). Probably, the engine room was squished a bit, too, or it jsut looks it because it's on a bigger screen.

Yeah, I missed it, too. But the whole movie had less of a Western feel than the show, and I'm sure they figured that it would alienate audiences.

The Firefly theme was played on a single guitar at the end of the credits. Very beautiful arrangement.
