THESENTINEL

WHAT AN AWESOME MOVIE!

Have some things that may help for folks who didn't understand certain plot choices made by Whedon and the boys on the film.

1.) Interaction between Mal and Jayne. Of course anyone who's seen the series knows that Mal and Jayne had a little conflict regarding Simon and River prior to the movie. With Jayne attempting to turn River and Simon in for a reward behind Mal's back and Mal threatening to jettison Jayne out the airlock as they left atmo. Some folks have said that this particular exchange was ignored in the film. I think not:

FIRST, when River goes on her killing spree in the bar, Jayne tries to subdue her...and lets her live after this "90-pound-girl" kicks his arse! I think the old Jayne would have capped her. Second, Jayne's argument with the captain just prior to attempting to "remove" River from Serenity was that "she" was not part of the crew. Notice that before it was always "they". Jayne has accepted Simon, but I think is very unnerved by River. Jayne is the type that sees a threat and wants to eliminate it. I think it demonstrates extreme character growth on his part that he didn't just kill her.

Why does Mal ignore Jayne's actions? Because he's not sure. RIVER JUST TRIED TO KILL HIM! I think everyone was understanding when she slashed Jayne with the butcher knife. Who among the crew hadn't wanted to do that at least once? But when she nearly killed Mal, he's not so sure that Jayne wasn't doing the right thing.

2.) Why would Jayne go on a suicide mission and not ask about the money?

BOOK! His workout partner etc. When Mal tells them the plan who does Jayne quote? "Sheppard used to say...if you can't do something smart, do something right." I think Book's death REALLY affected Jayne.

3.) Why Wash? Sadly enough, it gives River a purpose as the ships new pilot. This may have been planned all along. Go back and watch the old episodes of River walking through the ship, carressing it's hull. I think she was destined to fly Serenity and I think SHE will be filling the pilot's seat from now on, as foreshadowed in the end of Serenity.

4.) Why let the operative live? MUCH MORE DEVELOPED storywise than killing him. First, this gives them a way out and buys them time to rebuild Serenity without alliance complications...The operative may have wiped out Book and his folks, but he saves the rest of the crew with the stand-down order. Second, kill or enlighten? I much pefered the second option. This is a hard-stonecold killer who sees the errors of his ways. Isn't that a THEME in a lot of westerns? Redemtion etc. I look forward to seeing the operative in future Serenity episodes/films.

5.) The Reaver secret wasn't near exciting enough. I BEG TO DIFFER. Maybe if you've read sci-fi for years it's a story that's been done before. But I think that the REAVERS HAD TO BE A MAJOR ELEMENT OF THIS STORY. Anyone else remember the fear on all the crews faces the first time the Reavers were mentioned on the series? REALLY WANTED TO SEE THEM IN ACTION. Also, someone on here said that the Reavers were made to keep the secret of Miranda. I didn't get that from the film. The Reavers were a biproduct of Miranda that in-turn ended up protecting its secret. AND WHAT A SECRET. The alliance was pacifying it's own people with drugs! This is classic Farenheit 451 (or for the new crowd EQUILIBRIUM) material. A secret like this could/would start a new civil war. When will the alliance attempt to brainwash my planet? This was HUGE!

6.) River and the martial arts. EXPERTLY DONE! High quality ass-kicking by a chick not dressed like a high-priced hooker. River is the best female butt-kicker since the Fifth Element.

I'm sure there are other objections out there but my hats off to Whedon and crew on an EXCELLENT movie. This is wha sci-fi was meant to be.

Later,

The Sentinel
