(Comics, TV Series, and Movie spoilers ahead)

Okay - calm down everyone.

>>> Wash is not dead! <<<

Why do I believe this? Here are the clues (taken from the TV series, comics, and movie):

1) Alan is signed for two more movies.

2) In the comics, Joss brought Agent Dobson back from the "dead" (killed in the pilot episode of the TV series) simply by saying that he was left for dead, but didn't actually die (even though mal shot him in the head!)

3) We never saw Wash's body or any sign of a grave (only the headstone).

4) We know internal medicine is quite advanced in this version of the future (see "the Message" episode as well as point 2 above) so a big stake through the chest would not automatically mean death (as long as someone tended to him within a few minutes - after the crew abandoned the ship)

5) If Mal and Zoë came back and found Wash's body missing, they would have assumed that the Reavers snatched it and might not tell the others (no need to have their last thoughts of Wash being eaten by cannibals, right?).

6) Also, in the comics, we see that the Blue Sun agents are still looking for River, and seem to operate outside of Alliance control. They may want her for other things that we still do not know about. A hostage like Wash would make excellent "bait" for luring her in.

----
Now having said all this, it is not a far stretch to guess that a couple of "Blue Gloves" (or "Blue Suits" as we see in the comics) dropped by during the battle and snatched up Wash and whisked him away for medical treatment. When Mal and Zoë went back inside Serenity, they assumed that he was taken by the Reavers, so they didn't tell anyone else. When they buried Book and Mr. Universe, they added a tombstone for Wash, because they truly believed that he was gone.

But he is not!

Good theories...excpet that the two Blue Sun agents are DEAD by the end of the comic. That's why the Alliance sends the Operative. Wash scrapes them off the ship at the end of issue three and there is a nice communication between the Alliance and the Operative discussing their failure. Re-read.

ARE YOU SURE HE SIGNED FOR 2 MORE MOVIES? Where's your evidence? What article? That would definitely ease some minds.

I wouldn't do too much easing of minds. Even if he is signed - he might only be in some flashbacks. Or, play a different character.

That seems like kind of a stretch to me. I didn't really get the impression that ANYONE could just "drop by" in middle fo that full-on Reaver attack.

Also, I think the fact that Alan Tudyk was signed for 2 more movies only means that if they want him he has to do it, not that they have to use him if they make more movies.

Yes, that's right everyone.

This post was written on a boat floating on a certain river in Eygpt.

1) So?

2) Okay.

3) Guess not.

4) Riiight.

5) Remember the scene at the beginning, in the town on Lilac? Mal shoots the guy dead and the Reavers drop the body. And later, when they are being chased on the Mule, and River says "they want us alive when they eat us"? They aren't interested in corpses, save for decoration. And why bother trying to get that particular corpse off a big nasty spike when there's live flesh running around to be raped/eaten/sewn into clothing? Hence, no disappearing body.

6) The comic shows us that this particular pair of "contractors" (as the voice at the end calls them) are dead. There may be more, but by that time the job had reassigned to the Operative.

So you're saying two more just happened to show up by random luck or as part of some nefarious plan, just to kidnap and heal Serenity's pilot for.... what exactly? To make him one of them? Use his amazing knowledge of how to fly Serenity against them... how exactly?

Please elaborate, rather than be so cryptic.

Wash is dead. DEAD.

Totally dead. (So not just a little dead then?)

He's gone. He won't be coming back to life. This is the Firefly verse. This isn't Buffy. This is supposed to a realistic vision of the future.

Joss was making it pretty obvious that Wash was dead. For Jimbo sake, he's got a hole through his chest that I could put my whole arm through.

He's dead. Okay? Not coming back. That was the hidden cryptic meaning (ooh) in my post.

Yes, he is apparently signed for sequels. But I don't doubt that they will be flashbacks...or some form of prequel.

1) Alan is signed for two more movies.
Could literally mean anything. Flashbacks even.

2) In the comics, Joss brought Agent Dobson back from the "dead" (killed in the pilot episode of the TV series) simply by saying that he was left for dead, but didn't actually die (even though mal shot him in the head!)
A head shot is not a definate killer. People can often survive from being shot in the head.
There was once a man who had a metal pole go straight through his skull and brain, and lived to tell the tale.
Wash had a huge metal pole go straight through his heart.

3) We never saw Wash's body or any sign of a grave (only the headstone).
He looked pretty dead at the end of that scene.

4) We know internal medicine is quite advanced in this version of the future (see "the Message" episode as well as point 2 above) so a big stake through the chest would not automatically mean death (as long as someone tended to him within a few minutes - after the crew abandoned the ship)
It's not that advanced... It would take most of wash's major organs being replaced within two-four minutes of the injury. It's stretching the bounds of believabillity somewhat.

5) If Mal and Zoë came back and found Wash's body missing, they would have assumed that the Reavers snatched it and might not tell the others (no need to have their last thoughts of Wash being eaten by cannibals, right?).
Reavers were all chasing the crew. Thats what they do. After chasing the crew, they were all dead.

6) Also, in the comics, we see that the Blue Sun agents are still looking for River, and seem to operate outside of Alliance control. They may want her for other things that we still do not know about. A hostage like Wash would make excellent "bait" for luring her in.
I doesn't seem like a strong enough reason for them to expend so many resources on bring Wash 'back from the dead', even if they could.
Beyond that, how did they know where his body was, how did they get past the battle, what were they doing there (the Operative took over the search for them).
Why didn't they abduct Inara when she was away from the crew?

Just an alternative viewpoint.

It's unlikely Dobson actually got a bullet in the brain, I mean really *in* it. If it hit him in the eye, it could've lodged there rather than going further. Believe me, really weird things happen with bullets and bodies sometimes.

A foot thick spike through the chest impacts on the lungs and the primary veins/arteries to/from the heart. That's the powerplant for the body right there... one little thing goes wrong and everything stops. Such a slender thread... as easily broken by a frickin' great spike there as a bullet in the head.

Hmm, considering the fact that no one has mentioned this, I think I'm the only person who interpreted this this way. I've only seen the movie once, so hopefully when I see it again this weekend, I will be able to take a closer look. I had thought that those little packets strapped to the rocket-thing at the end, at the tombstone part, were some ash, as in cremation. Aparently I misinterpreted it?

I believe the rocket has little bits of paper stuck to it, each bearing a message of some kind from those that wrote them, namely the rest of the crew. It then gets launched up into the sky and explodes in a blaze of fire.

Seems appropriate both for Wash and as a chinese-type tradition. Couldn't say for sure about the chinese bit, but that's what I thought.

deal with it, move on

IF he comes back, it wont be some miraculous dynasty shower scene scenario. it will be in flashbacks, (we all know Joss loves his flashback scenes, well those of us who have watched buffy and angel) Or he just wont appear at all. Signed on or not, he might not be written in. who knows. Lets just wait and see

Dare I say it

Its only a Movie

I thought I was clinging to false hope by thinking Gunn survived the Angel finale - most people (and Joss if I recall!) would mock me for that and yet we didn't see it happen on screen.

Wash, however, had a great big harpoon shot through his chest - this we saw. Now OK, Mal & Zoe had to get out of there pretty quick and there was no real time to check for a pulse etc! But they were experienced soldiers - I'm sure they could recognise a dead body when they saw one.

Presumably, once the battle was over they went back to remove the body and then bury it. If he was alive why on earth not show it? For some big reveal in the sequel? Would that really make sense? Just because we accept Wash's death doesn't mean we dislike the character - it just makes us realists. While typing this I rememberd Jurassic Park 3 - remember the young guy who got carried off by the pterodactyl? And who was miraculously found alive at the end of the film? Now on the one hand, I thought "great" because he was cute! On the other hand, it was totally unrealistic - how on earth did he survive.

Joss has never been afraid to kill off beloved characters. This has been repeated time and time again on these boards. He dedicated an entire season of Buffy to her earning the right to come back to life so personally I find it impossible to believe that Wash will appear in the sequel, laugh "Tis but a scratch" and carry on like nothing happened.

Let's all calm down, take a moment to mourn Wash and Book and then move on....

Last I saw Wash, he had a 6-foot steel HARPOON STICKING FROM HIS CHEST! He did not nor could he have survived. As dumb a move as it was for Joss, he killed Wash, Wash is dead, Wash is NOT coming back.

Regarding him being signed on for the next movie(s), this is pointless to discuss. Serenity, sad as it is to write, has not made enough money domestically or worldwide to get a second movie. There will be no sequal, there will be no TV series unless FOX gives up its rights and everybody can be brought back together from new projects and a new network wants to pay for a restart of a series of a movie that did not do well enough at the box office to have a second movie made.

So in closing, Wash is dead, Firefly/Serenity is over and the only chance of seeing Wash again will be in the comic books.

OK ive finally stopped laughing at being called a little kid.

Here am I, 29 years old, with 2 children, own house, car and life. Able to differentiate between a movie and real life, Able to accept that sometime people die in films, even my favorite characters (and yes mr you are all wash haters) Wash IS my favorite) who i cried for and mourned for. Then I got a hug, I dried my tears, I had a vodka, and I went back to real life, thats the thing most of us live in.

And yet im a kid. That seem right to you

Absolutely have an opinion and a theory of your own and share it, but please be mature enough to accept that not everone will agree, accept it with grace and dignity, not stamp your feet and hurl insults because you didn't get the response you wanted.

That something my 8 year old son would do, because he dosnt understand the reasoning of opinion just yet.

Your theory although fantastically fanciful, is full of holes. it would make a great fic.

BALLAD

Ok, here I go, throwing my hat into this one:

I personally don't think Wash WILL come back.

But I think it's neat that Joss has left himself some wiggle room. If he feels like the story absotively posolutely cannot be told without Wash...he's got a fallback plan. I kind of agree that the extent of the injury may have been underestimated by the original poster, but there's still that possibility. He's not saying it's probable, just that it's possible. Which I could agree with.

I would be a little disappointed if Wash DID come back. (cause, cheesy) But I wouldn't argue that there's NO possible way he ever could.

DONCOAT

Personally, I think we could still get plenty of Wash in sequels without his actual resurrection.

Consider: we've never seen anything of the romance/courtship between Wash and Zoe, from the "he bothers me" stage until they're already married.

Now, Zoe has to come to grips with this terrible loss. If he chooses to, Joss could spend some time in any followups showing us Zoe's grieving process, including scenes from their relationship between the "Out of Gas" introduction and their eventual marriage. This could be done with flashbacks, dream sequences, even visions -- Zoe could be 'haunted' by Wash's memory.

This would allow for a lot of new Washian moments, without resorting to a resurrection (which I agree would be pretty cheesy).

I really don't see the need for a lot of sniping among us Browncoats. Nor do I think that Firefly/Serenity is necessarily "over", or that it does anybody any good to make statements to that effect. Hmmm, didn't I hear something about Firefly being "over" in 2002?

A massive harpoon CRASHES through the windshield and impales him [Wash] to his chair. It's as thick around as a telephone pole.

Wash has time to open his mouth in surprise before he is dead.

I don't hate Wash. I love Wash. His death hurt like hell...but I grieved for the death of a much-loved character and moved on. Such is life.

Secondly, since when am I a... "new punk kid"?

I am not a punk. I'm hardly a kid either. New to the Jossverse? Heck no. I've been a fan for 8 years. Became a Joss fan back when Buffy season One started airing on British terrestial tv.

Now, of all the people posting in this thread, you are the one making personal attacks. Thats the second time you have made a reference to my age. What does my age have to do with the death of Wash?

If Wash is bought back to life, it would completely cheapen, for me, not only his death scene, but every single thing that followed it in the BDM. It would suck the emotion out of it.

SerenityPunk made a, I believe, fitting reference to Dynasty. Oh, it was all a dream...

Oh no you didn't! I can't believe that you've lowered the level of discourse to that. Un. Believable.

My $.02: if Wash comes back to life (through any means but flashback) I will lose much respect for Joss.

I have to completely agree here. I have seen a lot of forums turn into nothing but angry and bashing rants when it wasn't necessary. There have been a few posts here that have done that and not everyone is being mature. I will not say I'm old and know better, I'm only 20 but I know to at least let others have their opinions and let that be.

The ideas presented do have a bit of a plot hole in them but that is what makes things like this so much fun. People can take turns trying to figure out how to fill the holes. I liked Wash as much as anyone probably (though Simon is my favorite next to Kaylee). He may be dead, whether or not he stays that way is up to Joss and of course to $$$ for sequels, series, books, comics, games, etc... Everyone should take their time to mourn and move on for now and then, just maybe laugh it all off if Wash returns.

Being signed on for a job does not mean you will get it, for example an application for employment doesn't guarentee you'll get the job. Getting the job doesn't mean you'll stay or keep it long. Nothing in life is guarenteed other than birth and death, and not even that is all guarenteed either. So lets all take a deep breath and smile for the others.

EVILBUNNIES

Ok, I need to get this out. Note: This is just adding on to what other people have already said, and I agree with them.

Wash is dead. It was sad, I cried all 3 times I saw it because I'm really emotional like that, but I can sit here and remember his character and smile that I was lucky enough to be able to watch him on both the small and big screens up until is tragic death. But wishing and hoping isn't going to bring him back.

Now I'm going to ignore all the "insults" lashed out at some good people because I don't want to get started on that. What I will say is that though your idea, JavidRho, would be interesting and good for a fanfic story, its very unlikely that it will ever happen in this 'verse and you shouldn't be getting mad at people who are just telling you exactly that. It's not going to happen in the sequel. Joss isn't that stupid, nor has he ever been really. This is not the Buffy/Angelverse and people don't come back to life.

That said, its best to leave what happened in the movie in the movie and if there are sequels, great! But the only Wash scenes we're gonna get now is flashbacks or dreams.

Mal: Define interesting.
Wash: Oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die?

It is sad... he was a great character. Flashbacks won't be enough, but they may well be all we'll ever get.

Here's a problem with posting, emails, letters, or anything in print...you can't here people's voices. What might be interpretted as mean might just be because you are reading it with an agry voice in your head. I sent an email to person I didn't know one time who was sending me forwars (I hate forwards because they fill up my email with stuff I don't care to read) and I wrote "I don't know who you are so please quite forwarding messages to me." He/she emailed me back saying there was no reason to be rude and that I shouldn't get angry. Well I wasn't either rude or angry, but obviously the voice he/she used in reading my email was a very angry one. So when reading posts remeber that. Try to read them in a normal voice and see if it sounds mean. Don't just respond with unquestionale meaness (like name-calling etc.).

By the way in Angel characters have come back to life and then died again. You never know...and thats whats cool.

RAE

Not to add fuel to the fire, but.... I've only seen the movie once, and was honestly too stunned and shock when Wash died to see anything but my favorite BDH with a spike through his chest. However, my son went a second time, and said he specifically watched for that scene. He said in the 2nd viewing, it looked like the spike was more toward the shoulder area than the chest. Anyone else see that? Or was he being overly hopeful?

I, for one, would love to have Wash back, any way that Joss can bring him back. I have faith that if he does bring him back, Joss will do so in a believable manner. I don't expect him to be living and breathing, but would love for it to happen. I fear, tho, that it will be in flashbacks, or maybe River "seeing" him still onboard, maybe as a ghost or something.

Rae

btw, knowing how Mal feels about his crew, I do not think it would be unreasonable for Wash to have been captured, possibly nearly dead, and used as a hostage to capture River. We all know, if any of the crew fell into enemy hands, they would all risk their lives to rescue them.

Of course, the Angel/Buffy-Verse has recourse to magic and Higher Powers... in Firefly/Serenity, that's a long wait for a train don't come.

wow, i've just read all the postings on this topic, and all the browncoats beating on each other was all very dramatic. wow. for what it's worth, i'm glad that wash's death has such a polarizing impact on us viewers/fans/browncoats. stuff like that don't happen too often in movies, at least for me.

the "More toward the shoulder" theory may be true. But it's my belief that Wash is no longer in the land of the living, there's the whole hologram on top of the toomstone thing at the end of "Serenity".
This may dissapoint some, and don't get me wrong, when I first saw "The Train Job" Wash was the one character that I instantly identified with, I loved the wash angle of the series.
However, Your theory about the "Blue Hands" men finding wash and bringing him back also seems believable. I'm just not sure what to think. If there is a sequel, I would love to find out more about the fate of the dearly beloved Wash.
