In the BDM when simon is complaining about river doing the thing with the people, he gives the captain a shot of something. Ive seen the film twice, but can never catch what its for. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Innoculation before they go down to the planet.

Mal makes mention of needing one just before.

When Mal and Simon first come face to face during the big one-shot, Mal says that he'd best get "innocked" before they land. So it's some kind of immuno-booster because they're landing on a new planet.

Plus, it's an easy way of saying "Simon is the doctor on the ship" to those who need it told.

(Doh! Not quick enough! )

"My God - you're like a trained ape. Without the training."
"Come a day there won't be room for naughty men like us to slip about at all..."
I know the secret.

See what happens when you take the time to write a detailed response with good information?

That'll learn ya.

thx for that. Much clearer. I think i was having one of those moments like in Safe where no one can understand what Malcom says to Simon.

Oh, the "Gotta say doctor, your talent for alienating folks is near-miraculous" part? I watched the scene over and over and over trying to figure out what he was saying, lol. Thank god for this site, or I woulda never known, lol.

Just gotta be fluent in Joss-ese.

inoccked - (innoculated)
'verse - (universe)
atmo - ( atmosphere)
"be on your merry....' - yeah, you're way ahead of me on this one.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

wow, thanks for explaining, I saw it my 4th time yesterday and once again thought 'whats going on there? must find out' and promptly forgot about it.

so they're not introducing a hard hitting drug abuse storyline for the next film? shame...

Not unless Joss decides to explain that syringe that Inara pulled out when the Reavers were after them (in the pilot episode Serenity, I think).

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

I suspect that it was supposed to play a part or have some importance later in the film, but the follow-up scene(s) was(were) dropped. Removing the innoculation scene would have disrupted the awesome long shot in the opening, so it was left in despite having no other significance.

Of course, I could be wrong.

doesn't inara in the pilot give simon her syringe and say its a standard companion innoculation kit? a likely story...

No, Inara gives Simon something else. Joss has said that if the series had lasted, Inara's syringe would have been explained. Inara's syringe, like Book's past are two of the many mysterys of the Firefly 'verse that might never be solved.

Bad Guy: And I think maybe you gonna give me a little one-on-one time with the missus.
Jayne: Oh, I think you might want to reconsider that last part. See, I married me a powerful ugly creature.
Mal: How can you say that? How can you shame me in front of new people?
Jayne: If I could make you prettier, I would.
Mal: You are not the man I met a year ago.

My theory is that it was a secret formula that turns Inara into something She-Hulk-ish and capable of dealing with reavers.

Maybe it was a sexy pheromone drug that made everyone think that Inara was really hot, a memory which is automatically triggered by mention of her name or the sound of her voice, so it works over video too, if you've seen her before, when in reality she's a hag.

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

My only take on that,

Select to view spoiler:

is if that is the case, why not use it in the movie where she has to fight Reavers?

And we know, cuz Joss said, it isn't a suicide kit. He said it's more disgusting than that.

I think, she's toting around the DNA of some lover(who may be dead) until she is ready to settle down, and imagine the discord that ensues when maybe Mal discovers his son isn't his son! Joss likes to make his characters twist, and overcome adversity (or just die! LOL!). I could totally see the story having gone this way had the series continued.

Just repeating my 2 credits worth. Of course, those who know me, also know I was totally wrong when I said, before we knew:

There is ONE system of planets and moons.
The Alliance made Reavers.
The Alliance made Reavers BEFORE the war!
Book was a high-muckity muck in the Alliance (the movie tells us most likely an Operative)

Keep flyin', folk! I am sure we'll see more secrets revealed in the future (such as Jayne's mom's name is Vera...)

i never knew it was menat to be socially worse than a suicide kit. hmm.. what if it was a poison that affected those that had intercourse with her? she knew reavers would rape her to death, so why not take some out too?
