Hi everyone. I was thinking why couldn't Joss reedit Serenity including scenes and parts of scenes back into the pilot for the upcoming DVD. Like a Directors cut. I know I sure would like to see a new cut especially after now seeing both versions. What do you guys think?

B5 reedited its pilot a few years back and its now out on DVD.
(Note: I'm not trying to open up a debate about B5 vs Firefly just making a point including another great show that had its pilot truncated).

P.S. In no way am I saying that there is anything wrong with either version of the pilot.

Cheers,
Klang

I noticed that in the unaired pilot there are a few things that don't quite make it into the aired pilot.

The conversation between Inara and Book - it rocks in the unaired pilot. It talks about ideology and Book actually mentions that he is a Christian (a word that is generally kept out of all of Joss's works despite his use of crosses and priests and... well... shepherds).

The conversation seemed to really show that these characters should be pitted against eachother, but they aren't. It speaks for Book's true faith (as opposed to the biggoted faith we're so used to seeing on tv and in our streets), and it speaks for Inara's character (something we would not expect in a prostitute).

I thought that the version of the conversation in the aired pilot was dumb and uninspiring. It just led us to believe that Inara had a thing for Mal - and then it pretty much ended. There was a little bit of the aforementioned stuff - but not enough.

I was angry that they changed this scene.

Yeah totaly agree with what your saying.
Oh and what about the scene with Zoe and Simon. I thought that added more to those characters and Mal as well. And it also explained the battle of Serenity in more depth.
This may sound a little strange but you know at the begining of the unaired pilot how Joss (well it sounds like him) is reading the text I sort of liked that (though if Mal or one of the others said it could be better). Maybe a shorter version explaining the conflict straight up then thrusting us into the first scene in the aired pilot. What do you think?

I'm wondering if there is any other scenes that didn't even make it into the unaired pilot?

Okay here's another thought I wonder if they will add any of the deleted scenes (of any episode) on to the DVD's. Hope so.

Oh, and has anyone heard any solid info on what or when to expect the DVD's.

P.S. Hope to see a Firefly movie

I agree, the Simon/Zoe scene needs to be added in. But to answer your question about scenes that didnt even make it in the unaired version, in a way that very same scene. There was a version of that scene on the fox website that had more to it, and the script pages had even more than that.

I've read versions of the script that has Dobson saying he was going to meet his sister-in-law and welcomed the delay Mal told them about. That wasnt in either version.

Its also interesting to note that there are scenes in both the unaired and aired but are different. By different I dont mean one is the extension of the other. I mean they are different and can not co-exist in the same version. These include:

Mal talking to Zoe and Wash about the ambassador - in each version he leaves the room but says something different in each
Book going to Inara's shuttle - in one version he brought the food, in the other he said he saved her some.
Mal and Jayne questioning Dobson - because the order of this scene and the Reaver encounter is switched, one version he mentions the Reavers, in the other he says something completly different.

It would be nice if these alternatives are on the DVD, as well as those scenes Rebecca Gayheart shot as Inara (but I doubt those will be)
