I am kinda new to Joss. Is he a control freak?? Will he let other people play in his verse??
I know he wrote most of the tv,movie and comics, but will he let other people write for him, say a new comic book series and/or a number of novels?? I know there is a novel in the works by some one else. But nothing on comics or any other type of expanded verse material?

I hope the novel does a good job of keeping his verse intact. Does he own the rights to his baby like Lucas does?? Could Fox/Universal be keeping the lid on expanded material?

I am an old comic book reader and been out of comics for a while, but after reading the Serenity comic by Dark Horse I would consider getting that book on a monthly subscription. I loved the comic, but if Joss has to be the writer, I wont put a bunch of money in my piggy bank for new Serenity comics anytime soon. I just dont see him spending time writing a issue a month when he has other material he is working on. I hope some of you people who know(followed his work) Joss will be able to enlighten me.

Thanks
Tholo

There will be more novels. I've heard that from the guy who wrote the movie novelization, Keith R. A. DeCandido. He posts here and on other 'verse-related boards as KRAD. So, there will be more novels.

Whedon loves to at least oversee what's going on in the other products--he doesn't want something with his name on it if he doesn't know what's in it. For example, the "Buffy" and "Angel" novels--he didn't have the time to oversee them, so he washed his hands of them. They are basically flashy fanfiction. Usually, the fans view stuff with Whedon involvement/oversight or the involvement of other Mutant Enemy (Whedon's old TV company) writers as canon; everything else is semi-to-non-canon. The stuff Whedon has a hand in also just tends to be better than the other stuff, which is another reason why the fans prefer it.

KRAD says the novels are subject to Joss' approval (the reason there's no official announcement yet is because they're waiting for Joss' feedback), which is more than can be said for the Buffyverse novels. They should be a fun read anyway, since quality SF writers like Steven Brust have submitted manuscripts (See http://whedonesque.com/comments/8600). KRAD has also submitted a new manuscript for consideration. Should be interesting to see what they produce.

Joss has also expressed an interest in doing more Serenity comics. The 3 issue miniseries was co-written with veteran comics writer Brett Matthews, who was also a writer on the series. If Whedon could leave the heavy lifting to trusted writers like Brett, a canon comic series could well happen. However, when the comics are canon, Whedon often forbids certain storylines from being pursued because he hopes to pursue them himself at a future date (hopefully on the large or small screen). Anyway, that's the rundown from what I've seen.

EDITED TO ADD: Oh, and as to who's getting the money from all this--Lucas was insanely fortunate that 20th Century Fox decided Star Wars' merchandising rights weren't worth keeping. That almost never happens, even with under-the-radar films on the off chance that they turn out to be another Star Wars. Studios aren't going to make the same mistake twice when it comes to money in the pocket. So the merchandising rights for the BDM all belong to Universal (just as the "Firefly" rights belong to 20th Century Fox).

Thanks for the reply.

Well I guess that is why Lucas so smart(back then) because he markted his movie, Universal didnt martekt this movie, and I belive it killed it and they have nobody to blame for poor box office but themselves. I never heard or saw a Serenity trailer on TV or heard on the radio.

I just hope SciFi puts Stargate down and picks up Serenity/Firefly.

KRAD ????? What is that? Is there a Serenity novel out now(besides the movie book)????

His FFF.net alias is KRAD, as in Keith R. A. DeCandido.

No other novels at this point, but there will be more next year--I think at least two. As I said, KRAD (Mr. DeCandido) and Steven Brust have both submitted manuscripts for Joss' approval, along with maybe ten others. Once Joss approves two of them (and probably asks for some corrections), they'll soon be on their way to the printing press.

And Joss likes to call himself a "control enthusiast."
