Everyone I know insists that River is the biggest bad-ass in the movie. I, however, must disagree.
River is now predisoped to beat people down. Zoe is a simple human, yet she jumped a butt load of reavers with her bare hands.
The moral of this story: Don't have ANYTHING to do with the death of Zoe's spouse and expect to come out in one piece.
I was so shocked and thrilled when she jumped the barrier and wailed on those reavers.

Okay . . .it's everyone's turn to argue with me and tell me why I'm wrong, and why River is the biggest bad-ass, and that I'm biased. I welcome the different POV.

It would have to be River, she was able to suppress or overcome the insanity of the Reavers in order to fight them. Without the part of the brain the regulates her emotions, she had to do it by sheer force of will.

I think all of the heroes had their own moments of glory. I'm proud of them all. For that I am grateful.

But you are right in that Zoe had enormous grace under pressure, held up where others would not have, and was remarkably strong in her reactions. Zoe's story in the movie may not have been the primary one, but it was beautiful and heartbreaking and Gina played it perfectly. I knew she was going to have a story line when they had her react to the first man being shot in the heist.

I felt that Zoe's extreme violence was actually an expression of her grief and rage,
not so much that she wanted to kill those responsible for Wash's death,
but more that she wanted to die fighting.

I cried through the time she was standing there fighting because I thought she wanted to commit suicide, that she had lost all hope.

River (now that she is less crazy and triggered) doesn't want to engage in violence, but if she choses to then she can do it with great efficiency and effectiveness.

Mal is certainly a bad ass for taking on the Alliance (although I can see that he felt he had no choice, they were never going to leave them alone) and risking the Reavers.

Actually Jayne should be more of a bad ass, except that for him violence is fun...except when it involves Reavers (Reavers being like Jaynes kryponite).

Okay, after thinking about it, I'm still going to give the crown to Mal:
without special training he took down the Operative, that was kind of amazing.

They're all bad-asses Every one of them either fought their way out of it, or died fighting.

Now, that's an idea I didn't even consider. Don't know if I agree, but it's a plausable thought.

How about a sympathy vote for Wash? Pulling Serenity out of a death spiral on 20% backups was some badass flying.

Not to mention:

"No."
"Yes."
"No!"
"Yes."

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.
