Piffle101, thanks! I look forward to reading your blog!!!! I am really hoping our BDH's make it to the East Coast sometime soon, but haven't heard anything yet. Yeah, it's expensive, but it's worth it, I think!

Rooms right at the convention hotel are only $99 a night, which is quite reasonable for a big-city hotel.

I'm going as a single, so I don't know whether you double that for two guests in a room, or whether that $99 will cover two guests. I do know that the $99 rooms can be had with two double beds, though, so maybe it's a don't ask, don't tell deal.

I redid my travel reservations yesterday and saved over $200 by booking my room through the Flanvention site (getting the convention discount) and using frequent flier miles for the plane ticket. And I'm flying first class!

Well,it looks as though I'll be going to this here convention. That's kinda exciting; I've been a member of this board since the show was on, but never actually met anyone else....

I'll be bringing a frind or two, I think, if I can convince them to pony up the cash. I've never been to CA before - in fact, I've never been farther west than western Maryland - so, this'll be cool.

Who all else is going? Anyone cool? =)
I'm Steve, fyi, as you may have guessed by my wildly creative sig, and my equally inventive s/n. Eh, I'm 20 (well, almost), and I'm at college in MD, studyin' history & teaching.
In case you care.

Hi Steve! Its good that you're going. I'll be attending with PsychicRiver and Piffle101. I'm sure we will be meeting a lot of really cool people. We're going for all 3 days, so we'll look out for you there. You'll have fun, I promise.

Most of the autos will probably be Sat. I'm not exactly sure, but thats my guess. You'll be safe if you don't go Friday. I don't think theres gonna be that much going on, except for the cocktail party/meet-n-greet.

Apparently the autos are on Sunday...in the afternoon. Which I think is cool. Its one of the final things.

See...you see the BDH's around all weekend, and ask them questions in the Q & A etc, and then at the end you get a chance to speak to them!

Just like me and Summer at Serenity...

trollish? perhaps

payed my dues for this show and it's success.

bought the dvds, loaned em out, payed for tickets for my recruit friends who otherwise wouldn't have seen the movie. i spread the word.

what's that bit of flotsam about giant's standing on the shoulders of others?

sorry...

i'd love to go see the cast of firefly at this convention... however, after the cost of the flight (in-country... 1-200 dollars), the hotel (as we've seen in a prior post, nothing less than 100 dollars a night, more likely 200+ unless you want a roach motel ~ let's not forget this is "hollywood", land of the l33t), um...

food, fuel (or car rental + fuel), etc. umm... add all of those expenses to the price of admission and it's how much??

factor in the cost of everything and to be with the high and mighty gods of serenity on their turf will easily go past $1000, prolly close to $2000 if you want such priveleges like air conditioning, solid food beyond soup and crackers, etc.

sorry, their acting (and whedon's writing) wasn't enough to make me wan't to shmooze up that much.

they want me at conventions, let them kiss my ass.

come to where i live, charge me what i can afford, build my loyalty, don't expect it's a given. etcetera etcetera. they are hollywood bigshots now. don't bother the gods u peons u.

Did they post the schedule?

Last time, All the non headliner (poeple not the cast) will have autos on Sat in the Auto room.

The cast has autos on Sunday in a different room around the end of that day.

Cool, thanks for your responses. Only problem - the weekend pass says it includes autographs from them all; the day pass, eh, doesn't. So, would I still be able to get their 'graphs if I just went Sat and Sun?

Also, any advice on things to say to convince a few frinds to join me? Right now, in responce to "what is there to do there," my reply is something along the lines of "Eh, I dunno...you can see the cast...plus, Browncoats will be there, and they're pretty cool."

I'm about 97% sure I'm going, at this point. My sister'll be flying down with me, but not attending the con - she wants to actually "see California." What a loser...

Hm.. California is cool , we'll be in Burbank- not much to see there. Go to Beverly Hills, 20 mins away.

The cast is really cool, there will be drinking, fun to be had, parties, good food. Meeting the BDH, in a Booster atmospehere, it will be Shiny! And who doesnt wanna party with Nathan and Jewel! And the rest of the cast?!

You could even tell Summer.."I can kill you with my brain" LOL

And yes, If you went Sat and Sun you would most likley get autos from everyone there. (Cast= free) Non cast= Money

Hope that helps!

The sticker shock has made me think about attending. I might attend one day. I'll decide when I see the schedule. Right now, I don't have the money to plunk down for all three days and the extras like the cocktail party or the photo ops with the stars.

I'm student teaching this year and that is an upaid apprenticeship that teachers have to go through in order to earn their teaching credentials. Hence, the lack of funds for things like expensive Flanvations.

Maybe, I'll catch you all and the cast next year when student teaching is over and I have job.

I remain disgusted. They should make themselves available to their fanbase without fleecing them.

Conventions such as this got their mojo from the early Trek conventions. TOS of Trek would never had survived if the cast hadn't come out of pure love for the fanbase (and not a need to get a payday).

The star's devotion to the fans was the key to their success... not the other way around.

I can assure you it totally isn't the cast.

In April this year, 6 of the cast attended a UK con, and the cost of the ticket for the whole weekend was £70 ($124). And an autograph from each guest and entrance to all the Q&A's was included in that price. And if you were in the first 170 ticket purchasers, you got into the meet and greet. A photo with a BDH cost you £10 ($17).

And bear in mind that the organiser had to pay for all of their flights over here too.

It isn't the cast being all Hollywood, its just...other stuff.

Yeah, I bow down to people who organize these events. It takes A LOT of planning and money organization. They fly out the stars, and sometimes their spouses or parents. Massive Kudos to organizers!!

I wonder what you organizer did to cut the cost of the convention? Ever since I heard of the Flanvation in Burbank, I've wondered why it's so expensive compared to other conventions. Also, for the price of $79 a day, I would expect more from this convention than other conventions like more contact with the actors and more insightful questions during the Q&A.

When I went to Comicon, I was in a room with four thousand other people. The questions and answers during the Q&A reminded me of a late night talk show like Letterman where the questions were boring softball questions and the responses were designed to be funny and witty only, rather than insightful and funny and witty. I would be angry if I paid $79 a day and got a repeat of the Comicon panel and I have a feeling that's what I would get. I'll probably sit Flanvation out.

You know, who really cares if they charge a lot? You expect the actors to show up at a convention for free, or out of the goodness of their hearts?

These actors and the people putting together the conventions have to make money okay?

If they want to charge $50 for an autograph, I'll pay that just to get the experience of seeing the actors up close in person and hearing them speak, and thank us, the fans for being interested in them and their cancelled show; and also thanks for the money. Thats a small price to pay if you ask me.

Summer Glau and the other actors arent making a lot of money right now as it is, so they are in a way, going out of their way to be at the convention, and they expect to get paid for this and rightly so.

They are actors, thats their line of work, so they should get paid. They do the job and then they get paid, so some of you, quit your whining about the price being too high.

I'm going to go, and I don't care if they charge $500 at the door, and $200 for signatures per actor...I'll cough up the dough and let them know that they are the best, and thank them for being in the right place at the right time to end up playing likeable characters, in a show that I have come to know and love.

Bare in mind that the actors are bieng put on the spot with these questions...and most people that ask them think of them ten minutes before hand.

Its like, come on brain, think of something cool...think of something funny!

So, ahem, why didn't you ask something insightful at Comicon?

A note on Comic Con that I will say. First off, only like 10 people got to ask questions, if that. The Slither move panel went on a little longer because they showed the trailer an extra time. Anyways, some of the questions (not all) were rather flat. So its no wonder there weren't that many great responses.

When you have a convention like this, where the people who go are going to be thinking of questions to ask before hand, then its not so bad. From what I saw of the Starfury video, the questions seemed really good. So I'm looking forward to the Q/A's for Flanvention.

I guess I need to stand up for the flan...

The Q&A's are very personal, with the stars eveing asking the con attendee's questions. It's very fun and ..what the word.. intimate.

It nothing like Comic-con, I went to WonderCon and when I went to a Booster Event, I learned the difference. Both cons, yes, but WonderCon is like one big Cattle Call..(Fun cattle call though)

It's fun! Yah, I know, Craaazzy expensive, but when you get there and refuse to leave Monday morning...you'll get your prices worth.. ( I know I did.)

This con is a lot more expensive than other cons. So, I am making a decision as a consumer as to whether or not I'm going to go to this one or to a less expensive one based on what I am or am not getting for my extra money.

Also, I am still in college, so my money does matter. For the poster to whom money is no object, all that I have to say is good for you. I'm glad your doing so well that it doesn't matter anymore. In fact, $235 is a little over a months worth of groceries to me or a little under two months worth of gas.

I guess the pricetag is how they keep it intimate as another poster put it in her defense of Flanvation's price tag. Shmuck's like me on the outer planets really can't afford to go.

I'm sorry that there are some people for whom the price of admission is a barrier.

Of course, that's only one of the barriers. There's also the expense of travel, which is worse for those farther away (some are coming from overseas!).

Then, within the show itself, one has the option to sign up for such things as the cocktail party, banquet, photo-ops, and so on. All these "extras" add up to far more than the admission price.

Then there are those rare seats at the Sunday Luncheon, which are being auctioned on eBay. Big money!

So it's possible to attend for relatively low damage -- for example, if you're close enough to drive, have a place to stay in LA, and go for only one day. But to go all out you need to dig deeper.

How is this not like the rest of life?

Yeah! Stop whining!

We have enough trouble just getting a new movie, plus the fact that no one writes any novels. Sure there's a comic book out there, but when you really think about it, with such a large fanbase, there is really very little out there for the Firefly fan except hope.

The idea of another Firefly series, or even getting another movie is a slim possiblility. We have everything on this planet against us being satisfied with this wonderful show, so shut up!

All the actors of Firefly/Serenity are complete stars to the true Browncoats out there, so conventions, and the actors showing up to please and make a profit off of us is a good thing, and at this point, its pretty much all we've got. If they show up, they get paid, and paid well!

We don't want the actors/actress to even think that we arent worth showing up for, so if you can't "find" the money to afford to pay the actors, and the people who put on the conventions, please shut up and sit down.

Look to the dead to teach you survival...

Alright, I caved. I couldn't stand the thought of all that Firefly love floatin' around and me not being a part of it...so I just booked my ticket on Southwest, bought a Weekend Pass and entry to the Cocktail Party and Banquet, and am trying not to pee my pants with excitement. FollowMal, I'll make sure and keep a special lookout for awesome Nathan moments for you!

River6213... you are a sycophant. One with too much money. You defend the indefensible. Yes, of course, those actors are never paid enough. They deserve all the money they can squeeze, bleed, and suck out of their loyal fans. It is, after all, our duty. Pay homage to the gods.

Ya know... in both ancient Greece and later in ancient Rome, actors were always the first to be slaughtered as fraudulent supporters of a phony elite during revolutions. And they always reached such dubious destinctions from a legacy that was honorable and respectable. In the aftermath of those revolts, the acting profession was always treated as the lowest form of life for one to pursue. You were a "whore of the lowest order" to be one such person. But the lesson was quickly forgotten after the destruction, and the actors always rose again, only to face the same fate.

History is repeating itself again and again and again.

Look, can we stop all the bitterness slowly creeping up in this thread? If you're attending the Flanvention, great! If not, its no biggie. The people who are going will be happy to share the stories of the events.

XG- I understand the convention is way expensive. We all know. But this won't be the only con ever. There might be others. Also, complaining about the price won't make it go down magically. Please don't take this in a snotty tone, its not. I'm just trying to put water on the fire before it gets out of control.

Wash: Oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die?

And please, enough with the negative, this is positive! The BDH's are kind enough to give us their time for a weekend to spend some time and have fun with them! Positive! Think positive!

Piffle101, I LOVE your enthusiasm! Hope to meet you at the shindig!

And I agree...getting to hang with the BDH's is TOTALLY worth the buckage...just another way we fans can show our appreciation for the hard work and angst they went through with this show/film.

At the end of the day it doesn't much matter. Whedon serves his corporate masters who have gone from rewriting his scripts to writing his scripts. I'm so looking forward to Wonder Woman and Goners (*gag*). The core of fans who love the inevitably doomed "Firefly" will recess into their cocoons and wait till another Lucas comes along. Whedon made his choice. Dollars speak louder than box office receipts, so the 2 of 3 sequels dies with the series. Serenity smelled like a dealbreaking film that wrapped up all the loose ends.

I have great faith in the rising tide of independant filmmakers who aren't under the fascistic chokehold of the Hollywood unions. I think they'll take the SciFi football and run with it.

XG

ps ~ the great strength of Trek before Roddenberry died and BermanBraga murdered it off was that there was always loose ends. More story to be told.
