Up until now I've only dipped my toe in the FF FanFic universe (FFFFU??), but now that I've nearly smoked all the hexa-buta-methanol out of the box set from repeated viewings, and seen the movie multiple times, I'm ready to read what other creative minds have envisioned for these characters.
But there's so much! Gah!
Anyone have any favs they can suggest? Personal preferences would be for ff that would come as close as possible to fitting in the current 'verse.

Best Firefly fanfic ever.

Oh, and The Blue Sun Job by Guildsster.

Brilliant fic, that.

I have to admit I had very low expectations when I posted this, but I was desperate. And now? All I have to say is DAAAAAAAMMMMMMMNNNNNNN!! I just read the first chapter of "Kaylee's Lament" and you are right - amazing. It was like reading another unfilmed script in a way - it is so well done that you can see and hear every character. I'm hooked. Thanks RelFexive.
I would also encourage anyone who has not read any FanFic or had a "bad" experience with it to give the links above a try.

I'm a total fanfic whore, so I'm going to pimp my own story:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/showprofile.asp?u=4986

It's called China Doll and it's under my Blue Sun Items. It's Inara centric, and I am working on the next chapter. The more people who harass me to finish it, the faster it will happen.

I am going to go read Kaylee's Lament now!

Inara: "Do aliens live among us?"
Kaylee: "Yes. One of them's a doctor."

You'll have to go digging since the stories are older, but find anything by Harriet Vane, excellent writing. Another good series currently running is titled Honest Run. Great stuff, that.

I've been reading nonstop for the past month, and a few days ago I did a blog with the best of what I've found so far:

Lots of talented writers out there, to put it mildly.

I agree with LadyShelley, Honest Run by CastIron Jack is a great series!
http://www.fireflyfan.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=2107

Destiny by SoulofSerenity is awesome too.
http://www.fireflyfan.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=5214.
He also wrote Vengence,
http://www.fireflyfan.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=3196

There were a number of individual fanfic's done for a contest on the "other" site, what were good too, but I can't remember all of them.
CastIronJack did one as did Cosmicfugitive and myself, were a few.

Thanks for all of the posts - this thread is in my link vault for sure. Someday it would be nice to gather the best of the best (and the great ones yet to be written) in one easy to find place.
I'm curious about any FanFic writers listening in - are you generally writers by trade (I ask broadly figuring many of you know of each other)? Or English majors that "had to get a real job?" Or just big fans that can't resist the urge to expand on the FF 'verse?
And for anyone: when you started reading FF did you get the craving to write it too?

I haven't written anything in FF yet, though a few ideas have been bubbling around;I do write in other fandoms though. I'm not an English major or a writer by trade, it's just something in the imagination gets sparked and won't let go until it's out.

I'm a newspaper writer/editor, and fic lets me stretch out and flex some rarely used creative writing muscles. Plus it's a nice outlet when there's no more episodes and you're still hung up on the show. I only write when I have a story to tell and something to say about the characters. I don't believe in expanding the verse. I believe in exploring what's already there.

I get paid to read and edit stories all day, and yet I choose to spend a good bit of my free time doing the same thing with fic (mine and others). That's how much I enjoy it.

Now that you mention it, I wasn't going to my own self, but I did one of those:
