Hey All,

I don't make it a habbit of signing up for fan sites of ANY type, but I felt the need to come here and tell you what you already know. Firefly is an amazing mental ride.

I remember when Firefly was on the air. I really wanted to watch it, but it conflicted with other items on my schedule that I was unwilling to part with at the time. Thanks to the miracle of TV on DVD, I finished up the first (and only) season last night. Like many, I was motivated to rent the DVD's after watching Serenity, which was a great movie. I plan to purchase the box set of Firefly this week for future viewing, and as a show of support for Joss's creation.

My favorite episode was "Out of Gas". I was surprised that it evoked so much emotion from me. While I have a tendancy to fall deep into a good story while I am reading, or watching it, I rarely get choked up. The scene that got me the most was:

Select to view spoiler:

the very end when the "used ship dealer" (or junk dealer as the case may be) was trying to sell Mal that big rocket looking thing. Mal turns around and seen serenity and basks in her beauty. Love at first sight. The look on Mals face, which we only saw for 2 seconds, said it all.

After all the emtional things that happened in that episode, the end really got to me. The whole episode was simply awesome.

I could sit here and complain about how stupid Fox is for having cancelled a series that actually dared to be different, but I'd be wasting my time. What's done is done. I would like to know why the show didn't get the attention it deserved though.

I do remember thinking a couple times that the western aspect was a little too thick, especially in "Heart of Gold", although I still enjoyed the episode because it was about the characters more than the sci-fi. You have to have already fallen in love with the show/characters in order to appreciate "Heart of Gold" It probably wouldn't have been hard for a viewer to flip to the channel while Firefly was on, see what appears to be a "cowboy movie" running, and flick right past the channel many times.

I'm not going to pretend that I could have done better than Joss, but I might have gone a tad bit lighter on the western content, or at least added more technology into the mix in order to keep the sci-fi people happy. Many people I have spoken too who never watched Firefly, REALLY enjoyed the movie, which was decidely MUCH heavier on the sci-fi aspect than the western. Just a little constructive criticism from a long time sci-fi lover. The asian twist was an awesome kick too, of course.

As a long time video game player, I would like to add that the underlying theme and style of Firefly would make a FANTASTIC MMORPG video game. In a genre that is dominated by "fantasy" styled games, a sci-fi with a western twist would be a nice change. Many gamers are thirsting for some original ideas in the game genre, myself included. I know it's a long shot, but if Joss is unwilling or unable to use the intellectual property for this, maybe someone else will consider the "western in space" theme for a future possibility.

Has Joss mentioned the possibility of continuing the Firefly universe in book format? I don't know how many of you are readers of sci-fi, but Star Wars has been carried far beyond the scope of the movies in book form, and very tastefully. They have used many differenmt authors in the book series to keep the ideas fresh, and to keep the series alive. There is enough content to keep someone reading for a VERY long time. I think Firefly is more than interesting enough to have a life as a book series, don't you?

Lastly, I thought Serenity was an awesome movie. I don't have time to give it a full review, but it was definately better than Episode I and II Star Wars movies by a long shot. Let that be a lesson to Lucas that some of us actually loved the CHARACTERS in the original Star Wars movies more than the special effects and big budget he so heavily showcased in Ep I an II. Hats off, Joss.

The characters from Serenity/Firefly were what put the show in a special place in my heart. The style is bold and memorable, and leaves me wishing for years of more content to absorb. If I was a decent writer, I would love to create some "fan content" for us all to read.

Anyway.. I have to get back to work. Looking forward to your replies.

Lates,

MindTrigger

very nice m8, nice to see an articulate love chant from time to time, and the characters in the series are my love too, the sci-fi/asian twist are just perks

There will be more books, two Joss-approved novels out next year; some great SF authors (including our very own KRAD!) have submitted manuscripts for consideration. However, Joss probably wants to tell a few key stories himself. Despite what some folks are saying, we can't rule out a live-action continuation just yet. The DVD sales haven't even come in. However, Joss has also expressed an interest in doing more Serenity comics to continue the story. So, I think they'll be plenty of new material to keep browncoats happy... as long as we get that sequel, gorramit!

I refuse to believe the series won't be back on TV at some point. It's destiny, just like Mal and the ship.

I'm still kinda holdin' on to that one myself. In fact, I'm even thinking that the lackluster performance of the movie will be a blessing in disguise. It's served to boost the sales of the dvd even more, but wasn't successful enough to commit the franchise to movie sequels.

Universal might even be smart enough to realize what we all know. Firefly belongs in a serial format. We need to get Tim Minear back on board. (I've been watching Wonderfalls and I'm convinced he was a crucial missing piece from the movie.) We need to get Firefly back into the mode of serial family drama and back to the storytelling style that Whedon and his merry band have perfected.

I'm new to Firefly too. I saw Serenity, loved it, and grabbed the DVD set of the show. It's AMAZING!!!

I wrote this to a friend before I watched the final episode (I watched it today along with the DVD extras):

We are now down to the final episode of Firefly. I'm almost depressed at the prospect of ending this wonderful journey. I've really grown to love these people, their ship, and the adventures they embark on together. It is going to be hard to let go.

Sadly, Whedon probably never had a chance. The episodes were aired out of order, which I imagine made everything a muddled mess, and the network most likely never got behind the show with any proper advertising or support. It's a true pity, but that's the state of today's corporate landscape.

I hope the extras are as cathartic as you say, and I really hope fireflyfans.net will give me a good outlet to mourn the untimely passing of this amazing series.

I probably sound nuts to you talking about this show like it's a funeral or the death of a close friend, but in a way, that's how I feel. Right now with that final episode still looming ahead for me, it's like that friend is in critical condition and I know it's only a matter of time before the lights go out for good.

... unfortunately, to many of us, it doesn't sound nuts at all. Just be glad you weren't drug through the agony of watching it die little by little, week by week as the ratings failed to materialize - and then sitting by helplessly watching as network after network turned it down. Joss is a big damn hero for hanging in there and making the movie, but Firefly deserved to be on for seven seasons.

What could one possibly expect from a network owned by an overweight elitist gasbag like Rupert Murdoch. Ever since he started his buying binge of American television stations the quality and truthfullness of news and the quality of television entertainment in general has been so "dumbed down" to appeal to the mass of retards that make up most of the television viewing audience (mostly the same people stupid enough to vote for Bush, go ahead! Bring it on!). Whenever something extraordinary and special comes along like Firefly you can bet that either the majority of tv viewers are too stupid to appreciate it or some bloated assbag whose family tree don't fork and works for FOX as a programming executive would cancel the show. Firefly was a special show and one that could only appeal to the minority of humans on this planet that can still think critically and have an original thought or two. It simply doesn't appeal to the mindless drones that flock to shows like "Apprentice", "Survivor" or the rest of the programming feces that floods the airwaves.

JayTee, honestly, if you think any other major network would've treated Firefly any better, you're dreaming. Sad but true. :( And, really, I'm not quite sure what Fox News and George W. Bush have to do with Firefly's ratings (or lack thereof). ;)
