Just wanted to voice my opinion that Kaylee looked marvelous in the film and just as marvelous in the series with a little bit more weight on her. She looked great in Wonderfalls as Heido-ho

I was a little taken aback when I first saw her in the film, but there's nothing wrong with Kaylee. Like you said, she looks great in both the film and the series.

Jewel herself has expressed concern about how personally people are taking Kaylee's weight loss.

That's just Jewel's normal weight, she says so herself, in fact she had to work hard (ugh, doesn't it make you wanna spit?) to put on and keep the extra weight for the series and the studio wasn't going to replace her with another actress for the movie if she didn't put on the weight again, so she decided to keep it off.

Which, I kinda agree with. Gaining and losing so much weight that quickly, just for the purpose of acting, isn't healthy.

So, ah, YAY Jewel, and Kaylee, no matter what weight she is.

besides...

Have you seen her headshot posted on her page on "imdb.com?"

She really is very exotically beautiful in person...

...and, now that the movie has got her libido inspiring River's interest in the topic, perhaps whatever the "Browncoat"ed Freaks get in the future for Firefly-Content, is able to capitolize on Kaylee/Jewel's wonderful beauty. Hell... if I'd been Preacher Book & she'd told me I was "going to go with" her (See Firefly, "Serenity, Pt.1")... OH yeah... no hesitation... done deal

HOHOHO

SOMEBODY better greenlight all these sequels 'cause I guarantee you'll be 'Laughing All The Way To The Bank' "or your friends will think you're a stupid, inbred stack of meat."

Wasn't her fault, Captain said he had a powerful need to eat "sometime this month." Maybe Kaylee just hadn't had enough colorful protein lately. Honestly, I think I prefered the look from the series. But, I agree, she's fine either way.

oh I was assuming that she was getting more and more heart sick waiting for Simon to make his move...
so she was wasting away with love....

I don't really think actors and actresses should put on or take off substantial amounts of weight for roles, it isn't healthy.
Better that Jewell should be her own healthy weight, whatever she considers that to be.
Kaylee is a sweet-heart at any weight.

Couldn't Truly Agree More - however... see the documentary on Disc 4 of the "Firefly" box... (what's it called?"... "That Was The Way It Was?")... anyway, Jewel says she was informed she had to gain something like 25 pounds to audition for the role.

I'm jealous: it takes me {mumblety-mumblety] months to lose Five Frikkin' Pounds...

You're Correct! to me Jewel was Kaylee and it didn't matter that she was a little bit skinnier for "Serenity". I chalked her weight loss up to the Cap'n not feedin' her as much food as he did in "Firefly".

With the "baby fat" that she had in the series made her seem more plucky, chipper, and perky. I loved Kaylee in the series.

I didnt enjoy her as much in the movie, she seemed more like another person; she was a different character that didnt really add anything to the plot of the movie.

*sigh*

I'll admit I was one of those who made a "skinny" comment, but that was in reference to the cover of the comic book, which was, of course, out of porportion, as they always are. I think Jewel is beautiful, regardless of what her weight is.

As for Kaylee being plucky in the series and different in the movie: The crew had been through 8 months of rough times that only looked to get rougher. It's no wonder she wasn't the cheerful, light-hearted Kaylee from the beginning. That she still had a tender heart was the amazing part.

You're not wrong. I mean just look at how far Christian Bale went for 'The Machinist'.

The guys is like a major butch-guy and he went down to like 60lbs for that role! It's like the opposite of Morgan Spurlock!

Twelve spheres of unendurable brightness spalled the velvety blackness of space.
The silence on Lester Tourville's flag bridge was absolute
And then the spell was broken as Shannon Foraker looked up from her console from where she had just sent a seemingly innocent command to the main computers of State Security's finest Superdreadnoughts.
"Oops." She said.

I never understood that reaction,
our Kaylee on Firefly was always capable of feeling hurt, or scared, or crushed...
(just look at her terror or Jubil Early, her humiliation at Jayne's jokes about wanting a gynocologist, her anger at Mal for suggesting she would look like a sheep on it's hind legs if she had a pretty dress, and her terror of having to shoot anyone during 'War Stories'...followed by how scared she was of River after she DID shoot three people)

now add to that another 6 months of having her affection for Simon crushed by his indifference and total lack of attention.

I felt that this was definitely our Kaylee, but in a dark time. She has fallen ever more deeply in love with Simon (this is obviously beyond the crush we saw in Firefly)...
her good-byes to him are filled with love, in such a funny sweet way (her voice breaking with love & sorrow):
"And don't ride in anything with a Capissen 38 engine, they fall right out of the sky"

I think she adds enormously to 'Serenity',
when she is angry at Mal it really bothers him,
when she points out that he never spoke up for Inara he is hearing his own heart rebuke him...because Kaylee is the one person on the ship that speaks to his heart.

Someone had mentioned before that Mal is like someone who has lost his own emotions and finds them in the people who surround them...and Kaylee has always been the heart he lost IMO.

Frankly if Kaylee had been all happy-go-lucky in 'Serenity' then THAT would have been out of character...because she really was not happy and chipper all the time in 'Firefly'

She was never shallow, or unaware of hurt and danger....

Well said Embers, bravo. Kaylee is and always will be the heart and warmth of the Serenity crew. She definitely was in the movie. Although we didn't get to see the family aspect as much as we did in the series(there were only two hours give the man a break) she was the one advocating for it when she confronted Mal about allowing Simon and River to leave.

I think that's got to be the best rant anyone's ever made about Kaylee and I agree 100%, she *is* the heart of the ship and of course even someone with her talent of finding bright sides in everything will have troubles with it, when they get in her situation.

The ship is falling appart, the ship she pretty much view as her baby. Simon hasn't shown any sign of coming closer to speak his heart to her and she's madly in love with him. And on top of that he decides to take River and leave?

She was spot on the way I had imagined her in that situation. I absolutely *loved* her in Serenity.

ANGELCRUSHERD

Kaylee's character seemed adolescent to me in the series. I always thought she was like Serenity's daughter, everyone felt a need to protect her while relying on her mechanical expertise to keep their bird in the air. When I saw the sex scene with the initial mechanic, I was surprised, for the lack of a better word. The girl that she portrayed herself as was actually a young woman. I think her weight in the series gave off a younger feel to her character or something, I'm not sure.

Anyway, I liked both Kaylees. Some people say it wasn't even noticable but I think it was pretty obvious. The weight loss didn't bother me at all, she should be able to keep the weight off if she wants. However much Firefly means to us Browncoats, it shouldn't require its actors to be uncomforable.
