It's like something out of the Onion: "Today around noon EST the Serenity/Firefly fan base reached a preponderance of nuttiness with the attempts to change the upcoming DVD cover art with an online petition."

SOULOFSERENITY

The Man They Call Soul...

Well, I seriously doubt that it's the actual cover. Remember the picture that stood in on Amazon.com for a while for the novelization? This is probably just a very good fan created cover.

well I really agree...who cares what the cover looks like?
I care about the extras!

(I'll admit that I was annoyed that Summers eyes are blue on the cover when we all know they are brown, but it isn't worth petitioning about)

I disagree. It has to be at least 62% or maybe 38%, but not 51%. I invite all those who feel the same to sign my petition.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. But really, what is with all of the petitions lately?

I think people should just be grateful of the date of the release. With it being released just before X-mas, there may be chance of a sequel. I'll sign the petition.

I'm with you guys on this one. I posted my thoughts about the petition pushing things a little too far on another Whedon site and was immediately attacked by many fellow fans.
It almost gave me a turn from the fandom. It's good to know I'm not the only one that feels this way.

WREN

I don't like the dvd cover, but I also thought the petition was a stupid idea. Then I read the following post from Gossi, who set up the petition:

>>Now, you see, people are flying off the handle here without knowing things.

Briefly:

- It took about 4 minutes to set up.

- It's done with the knowledge of Universal Home Entertainment.

- Universal Home Entertainment's Vice President is going to review the comments on the petition.

- I'm working on the DVD with - you guessed it...

I feel they made the wrong call with the DVD artwork, so I put a petition online to see if anybody signed it. 1200 people signed it in the first 24 hours, which I believe is more people than actually preordered it. Nearly all the online blogs which mention the DVD say how bad the artwork is.

Why do I give a fuck?

Look. Serenity is going to take just under $40m on worldwide box office release, all said and done. It needs to make at least $100m to break even, or $80m for sequel consideration.

So it needs to make $60m on DVD. That would have to be the largest selling DVD ever released.

And if you have a cover which looks like a really bad Direct-To-DVD Sci-fi movie - trust me - you aren't going to get a 10th of that.

If they stick with this cover, it quite probably means the end of the franchise. Sound dramatic? Well, it was about 4 minutes effort to set up the petition and call the EVP Marketing office, and it has a good chance of turning this around.

If anybody is remotely bothered by the prospect of sequels, you should understand this needs to be a DVD which leaps out of the shelves at people, begging them to look at it. Universal needs to pull out all the stops here to make a cover which matches the effort and love which has gone into the movie. I don't think they have, and if people don't agree with that, that's fine.

This isn't about pissing Universal off. They know full well who I am. You'll see a video message from Joss online soon on the Universal site, and you might spot he comments on the kind of things I talk about - that ain't coincidence.

As a CUSTOMER of Universal, you have a right to ask for something which you want to buy. If you like the cover, buy it. If you don't, ask for something better - it's your money they are taking, and they actually want to deliver something people want on mass.<<

When you consider Joss has also left a response on the UB which shows he doesn't like the cover, the petition doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

Yeah, but the artwork is being printed as we speak. It's too late to have this thing changed and still meet the Dec availability dates.

anyone know how many copies in the first run?

Looking for it at the discount bin soon.
