CUNNINGORANGETOQUE

Hullo, i know this has probably been said before, but anyways...

As of the weekend of October 30th, we were sitting at 311 theatres, and it looks as if this coming weekend may be SERENITY's last in theatres, if the halloween weekend wasn't.

But here's what makes me proud:
Even though i am a truly loyal firefly fan (and fan off all things Joss), and i was there since the beginning of it's confused FOX tv run, i was psyched for the movie, and wished it the best.

I didn't expect it to be a runaway-$100 million-opening-weekend-movie(though that wouldve been sweet). I wasn't sure what to expect. I mean (aside from being 16, and turning 17 tomorrow, with teenage ideas changing every minute or so), i was sure it would do great before the release, and as the release date drew closer i started to wonder. Would the fan base be enough? Would it be appealing to people who hadn't heard of Firefly?

It opened with a weekend of a little over $10 million.

And i was happy with that.

It was one of those "It did better than i THOUGHT it might, but it didn't do as well as i would have LIKED" scenarios.

It has since been a successful film, and i have seen it multiple times (though i won't specify how many, lol, I got a bit crazy in the brainpan) at my local theatres in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. My brother and i converted a total of i think 14 friends(and in turn, even their parents) before the movie. I just have to say i loved the movie(even, yes, the deaths-of two of my favourite characters). I didn't love it in the same way as the show, but i love them both, it's not fair to try and compare the 2 too much. As Joss said, they are two completely different beasts, or something along those lines.

But back to my point:

The movie still hasn't broken even with its production costs of $39 million, and probably won't in its theatre run.

But here's what makes me proud:

AS OF HALLOWEEN
Domestic: $24,907,085 71.4%
+ Overseas: $9,971,849 28.6%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

= Worldwide: $34,878,934

#35 MILLION!!!

Hold your heads up high, this movie will profit. Even if the movie sells for 15 bucks per dvd or vhs, less than 350'000 people have to see our little venture for us to break the 39 million barrier.

SERENITY IS HERE TO STAY.

-Noel

Just for information, the PRODUCTION budget of Serenity was $40m. That's without marketing, distribution, prints etc.

Universal need around $100m (2.5x the production budget is the industry benchmark) to break even.

I believe the number they gave for Serenity was $80 million, specifically, to justify a sequel.

That was the box office number, for information (the quote actually includes the words "box office"). By which they mean at the cinema, with $20mish made from DVD sales etc.

We sold enough of the show DVDs to justify the movie, and with the new fans we've been drawing in, the new sells of the DVD box set as well as the sale of DVDs *will* draw a lot of money. I think we can pull it off!
