I'm a browncoat from Ireland. Although I assume there are not very many others around here.
Unless I have missed some posts from Ireland, as I haven't read the entire thread yet.

Hi All

I'm relatively new to this board - and from the UK.......Oxford to be exact!

I think organising a shindig here in the UK would be fantastic ......

I've noticed that several people are from in or around Oxford - so perhaps we should all get together some time? :)

I'm near Oxford some of the time... maybe a shindig would work for me when I'm in the neighbourhood.

Hi!

Here you have a browncoat from Spain! I love Serenity, but is beeing screened in Spain since two weeks ago only, maybe that's the reason why you don't know many from my country.

Also we cannot have the chance to see firefly yet, so... it's a little bit difficult. But here am I. one spanish browncoat at last.

I can maybe understand A)… although I think subtitles are far faaaaaaaar better since you get to hear the original performance and have a chance to learn the language. As for reason B), that’s just plain silly. There’s always been a lot of foreign language influence on all European languages. It’s a part of the natural evolvement of a language and has been for as long as humans came up with the concept of language in the first place. Ack! I’m rambling again, aren’t I? (I could go on about this subject forever. I’ll just go ahead and round it up now.)

Anyway, I have a hard time deciding which the most stupid alternative is: The way some European countries choose to dub TV shows and movies, or the way the census in Northern American puts a gag on people’s rights to free expression. (I.e. not allow certain words to be used.) Stupidity is alive and well on both sides of the pond.

I find the whole dubbing thing disturbing! I'm so happy to live in a country where they've seen the light. They dub childrens movies up to a certain age level, but we can still watch the original language on the cinema if we want. It's just a service for children up until they start learning to read well enough to understand subtitles in school. And that's the way I think it should be. This way the kids can enjoy a film or a show without having problems understanding it, but we're not forced to do it if we don't want to. I myself have been pretty acclimed to english way before I started learning it. One of my favourite shows growig up was The Gummy Bears *in* english. I've never seen a full episode in norwegian... lol

They did actually try out to dub an american zitcom, just to test it out... and OMG it was horrible... I laughed my ass off watching that first episode. Everyone looked like idiots, cause they used this dialect that's only spoken up in the north... it felt so unnatural... after one epiode they switched back to english and never looked back... luckily the show they tried to dub wasn't very good, so they didn't ruin much for us...

And wow... I've so far seen 4 swedish people to report... but no norwegians.... :( Are we a lesser fan group? I certainly hope not

Yes, me!

And can I suggest a meet-up at the Fusion convention at the end of April in Blackpool, UK, which will be featuring Nathan, Gina, Jewel, Morena, and lots of Buffy and Angel people too.
(see http://www.seanharry.com/fusion/)

Pat

LMAO, silly me... I've not been looking at the dates of this thread at all... LMAO...

How many of you guys were there? I was, it was my first convention... but I hadn't seen firefly yet then...

GIXXER

East London.

As a (sort of) direct connection to Firefly, I go shopping at what you would probably term a mall in Beckton.

Before it was semi-developed, Stanley Kubrick used it to shoot the Vietnam scenes for "Full Metal Jacket." And of course that brings us neatly to Animal Mother.

You might not believe it, but under fire Animal Mother is one of the finest human beings in the world. All he needs is somebody to throw hand-grenades at him the rest of his life.

Well I'm french and I live in Spain!

and no wonder there are few French people, Firefly was never aired and Buffy never was put before 22:30 on TV... Frech language is for Quebec.

Yup, the French language is for Quebec. Virtually anything released in Canada has to have French on it as well. I feel so left out, not being from Europe .

*goes in search of Canadian browncoats*

I give to you the Seeker of Serenity, the Valkyrie Warrior, the Gourmet Cook and the Truth Scoper.
