Hi all

Well i new to this site and firefly/serenity but I love it to bits!

I was ramdoness that lead me to catch it on the sci-fi channel in the UK and I only saw 2 episodes before I saw the film trailer!

I was like wow, this is different, fresh and its really good. I then felt compelled to see the film, not knowing if I would 'get' it not having seen much of the series. I did get it and I loved it, I dragged my misses along to a 2nd showing at a local cinema in Nottingham and both times it was pretty packed out (which surely is a good sign?)

Before I went to see the film I went to this site and took a look at all the info, only to be disappointed when I found out the show had been pulled. After only one incomplete series! I was however really impressed by the community effort of the fans/browncoats.

I enjoyed the thrill rise of the movie so much that the next day I went out to look for the box set for firefly. This was hard to get hold of and according to the guy in the DVD shop I got it from, since the movie was screened, the series had been flying off the shelf! I got it for £18.99 (bargain!) last saterday and have been watching a few episodes everyday since. I just watched the last espisode today and then went through all the spcial features.

It is such a great series and now its over I feel quite sad :( Firefly is one of the best series I have seen in so long and I cant belive it was pulled!

Why? Please can someone explain why in the name of the verse was it pulled?

Decent TV programs are so few and faw between and if i'm subjected to one more reality TV show im going to cry!

Wayching the special features, hearing the cast and crew talk about firefly with such passion was really heart warming. I cant help but feel sad to think there might not be any more series of firefly.

I realise i'm a little late in the game compared to most of the brown coats but im still a great fan of this and wonder, apart from dragging friends and family to moviw screenings and buying the DVD set/soundtrack and of course movie when it comes out, is there anything we can do to convince FOX or some other network to finace some new series?

This is one of those series where you can really relate and feel for the characters and I havent had that feeling in a movie or TV series since the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. It had a qaulity you dont often see in a sci-fi or space opera.

Also I was wondering if killing off Alan Tudyk's character means there is definitely not going to be more TV series for/of firefly? I'm kinda curious why they killed him off anyway?

Sorry for the long post and all the questions but I felt compelled to do something and at least get this off my chest.

Thanks for sharing how you come to find Firefly/Serenity. I never get tired of reading how others come to learn about the show & become fans.

You have described how many us have felt at one point or another on this journey. Some of us have been here since the beginning back when the show was on the air in the U.S. back in 2002. The anxiety of bad ratings, episodes being aired out of order, being preempted for baseball, than the final anguish of hiatus & cancellation was a lot to bear.

The 'Verse sure is a lot brighter than it was back at the end of 2002/early 2003. We now have the movie, we got 3 comics, there are trading cards from the movie, action figures, a novelization, a movie magazine, the Serenity Visual Companion, and a plethora of fan art & apparel. It's a great time to be part of the fanbase.

Be sure to tell everyone you know about the series & the movie. The more the merrier!

Ah, the eternal question. The real answer will probably never be known. The short answer is that it was FOX’s fault.

They, in the words of Mr. Whedon, “shamefully mistreated” the series almost from the get-go. They gave Joss $10 million to do the 2 hour pilot and once he’d done it, they decided they didn’t want it and instead they forced him and Tim Minear to write a new pilot (“The Train Job”) in 48 hours. Because Joss & Tim were still hoping to talk FOX out of this idiocy, they wrote the ep so that it introduced the characters while at the same time taking place after the pilot—the result was an okay episode that didn’t really introduce the universe or the characters very well. Then FOX decided to air the show in the Friday Night Timeslot of Death, when most viewers (especially in the prime demographic) are not watching TV. Then FOX barely advertised for the show, and the ads they did broadcast misrepresented the show as brainless action & sleaze (your usual FOX favorites). Then they began airing the episodes out of order, so the story arcs didn’t quite make sense. Then FOX frequently pre-empted the show for baseball games, making it even harder to find than it already was. Then they complained that the show had poor ratings, so they cancelled it—airing the pilot episode last and not airing three of the eps produced. Based on this, as far as I can tell FOX was trying to kill the show at least as soon as they saw the pilot.

Why did FOX waste millions slowly killing “Firefly” when it could have been one of their networks greatest triumphs? Nobody knows. What we do know, is that right now they’re sitting on the television rights, almost eliminating any chance of the ‘verse returning to the airwaves. It’s not completely hopeless, but right now I’m thinking our best chances for a continuation lie with sequels. Either way, the only thing that will convince them to do more is if they feel there’s money in it. So, pre-order your copy of the Serenity DVD today and show ‘em there’s an audience base out there that wants more.

Another constant question. As I said above, a return to TV is largely up to FOX, and they don’t seem to want it. As for why Wash was killed (you really should put a spoiler warning about that, by the way), there are a number of reasons. The one most frequently mentioned is that the sudden shock makes the audience realize that nothing is safe and makes them worry that Whedon is going to kill everyone. It also removes the emotional distance separating us from the characters: In a TV series (and in many action films), you know that the stars will not be harmed and this distances you from the characters. Captain Picard may think he’s in danger, but the audience knows he’ll be back next week. Wash’s death takes that emotional distance away. The audience worries if anyone is going to make it out alive—just like the characters are worrying. It brings our emotions into line with the characters, which is always of the good. Another reason to kill Wash is the fact that it would be unrealistic for them to plunge into this massive battle and have everyone come out alive; it would undercut the entire sequence. Another reason is to make Zoe’s words prophetic: “Do you know what the definition of a hero is? It’s somebody who gets other people killed.” Wash’s death shows the downside of heroism that Zoe was talking about. Wash’s death also adds to the melancholy victory at the end of the film; nothing is the same. Mal hasn’t brought down the Alliance, but he’s introduced doubt about its ideology—something that can never be taken back, like death. Both the crew and the Alliance must go on their respective ways, but nothing is the same for either of them. Another reason Wash had to die is because the entire storyline with the Signal is a metaphor for “Firefly.” Wash was often seen as a Whedon-surrogate on the show, so his role in the film is metaphoric for Whedon on the series. After the most difficult piloting job in his life (creating a magnificent show despite FOX’s interference), just when it looks like he’s succeeded he gets a huge spike rammed through his chest (which must have been what the cancellation felt like for Whedon; shocking, brutal, and painful). Whedon’s surrogate is then transferred to Mal; cynical, harden by grief, but determined to get the Signal out. Although Mal succeeds in broadcasting the Signal (the Big Damn Movie), something is inevitably lost along the way (the BDM can never be the series). So there’s a metaphoric reason for the death, too.

That’s all the reasons I can think of off the top of my head, but I’m sure there’s a multitude more. Anyway, welcome to the site, MattMack. Please, stick around and discuss the ‘verse with us.

A sequel would be good because river, in shindig, said she had more than one secret (dun dun DUN!) and a prequel would be good because we have that 5 (or 6?) month gap to fill between FF and the BDM. Most people who go to see the prequel will probably have seen the original, and many of them will have become browncoats and have seen FF, so joss wouldn’t have to spell so much out for the new guys.

I loved what Lurk (can I call you that?) said about Wash's death. I was gutted when he died in such a brutal manner and am still reeling in truth but it's absolutely true that his death will enhance any future be it episodes or films. I just hope we all get the chance to find out. There's so much still to tell and Serenity has left me hungry for more. I've watched the episodes over and over since seeing the film, and all the scenes with Wash in are so sad. Feelings understandably are running high at the moment so it's nice to see some logic.

Well, it's more like a month-or-two gap...but sequels will be nice...

that gap was filled with the comic books....

I think it is most likely that any 'prequel' info would come as flashbacks (like in 'Out of Gas')
