May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I don't think that there has been an official word as to why the release of the DVD was set for Dec 20th, but I think it is safe to assume that the early release of the DVD is to help pull in the Christmas sales & add to their bottom line.

It is no secret that Universal did not pull in the box office numbers that they had hoped. Their decision to start pulling the BDM from releases in overseas markets shows that they are inacting cost cutting measures.

We really need to work to push the DVD & get the sales #s as high as we can, as quickly as we can.

When I was at Dragon*Con in early Sept before Serenity was even released I had heard that the DVD was scheduled to come out on Dec 20th so the release date had nothing to do with success or failure at the box office.

yes and no
If 'Serenity' had grown a big audience (ala 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' or '40 Year Old Virgin')
then Universal would probably have held off on the DVD,
and left it in the theaters longer
(and would have let it open in more foreign markets)

but the box office is depressed all over,
it isn't that 'Serenity' did worse than other films
(look at 'Into the Blue' look at 'Doom'...)
fact is that in today's market DVDs do better than films,
and Christmas is a HUGE DVD buying time.
It only makes sense to try to take advantage of the season.

Looks like 'Serenity' will break even (earn it's $40 million) at the box office
and make some profit in DVD
hopefully a LOT of profit in DVD!

Well, as you probably know, the film hasn’t really broken even. It looks like it might make back its budget at the box office, but only part of that box office goes to Uni. So they’re still in the red. And that means the DVDs will have to make up even more of that cost.

So, we need to sell at least 1.5 million copies, or roughly three for every “Firefly” DVD sold (before the film came out). That’s a lot of copies, so I hope folks are still doing what they can to spread the word and convert folks. DVD is (probably) the last stand for us, so we need all the help we can get.

See my thread for some suggestions on what you can do now to boost DVD sales: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=14173
