I have noticed in several of the episodes that members of the crew are playing very traditional, not to say old fashioned games. I have noticed chinese checkers, dominoes, cards and horse shoes. Guess it makes sense that they would need amusement in the black given the long distances and the tedium of the trip. Has anyone noticed any other games? If you were on Serenity's crew what games would you take? No electronic games allowed, nothing with batteries.

Hrm.

Settlers of Catan

Buffy the Vampire Slayer CCG (I have enough cards for the whole crew!)

A Game of Thrones CCG (only enough for a couple decks, we'd have to share!)

Chrononauts (though the subject matter might be confusing, since it deals with the 20th century on Earth-that-was)

Risk 2210 (Can also be used to play the original game)

Early: You ever been raped, Kaylee?
Kaylee: You know, it's funny you should mention that... ever heard of the Fox network?

Chess, everyone needs chess. The M-game (three or more normal decks of cards.) UNO Maybe Go, Rota, other things too.

I'm thinking a 3-d version of a normal board game, cause it's the future, you need a futury thing, chess is good for this but it requires different rules( http://www.hixoxih.com/games/chess/3D8L.htm, http://www.chessvariants.com/3d.dir/withams-3d-chess.html) could also be Othello, or even Go.

Been a long time since I looked at the second 3-d chess link, yeah it needs some work I need to update that severely.

Go is cool,

Definately chess, due to my obsession with the game.

But who would the best player be ?

Simon, likely a solid positional player

Zoe, always with the tactics

Book, for his depth in book openings of course
( couldn't resist )

River, In everyones head ( Like Shirov maybe )

Inara, playing for developement

Jayne, crazy with the sacs

Kaylee, pawn endings

Wash, a speed master

Mal, focused right in on the King

Does anybody in the Cleveland area play this game?

I have SOOOO many cards and no one to play with... my friends all look at me like I'm insane when I try to get them to play.

Mal, Kaylee, Wash, and Jayne are all too impuslive to play chess. I don't see Zoe as being much of a chess person either, since there's not enough action, and she's an action based person. I could see Simon and Book playing competitively, but River would obviously blow everyone out of the water- besides being the intuitive genius she is, she'd know what her opponent was thinking.

As far as card games are concerned, it's all about Euchre.

I don't know, I can see Zoë playing chess. Remember "The Train Job"? She was playing Chinese checkers and kicking Mal's butt.

What game were the boys playing with the round fruit cards in Shindig? "Plums are tall," Simon says. Does that mean plums are trump? Is there such a game in production?

Are you sure that's the link you meant it to be? That story has no connection to the card game nor the episode (Shindig).

Yes, I am taking you seriously, because I have no reason to doubt that you might have seen a deck of cards online somewhere. And I have first-hand knowledge of what one letter mistyped can do when the word processor does an auto-correct and you don't notice: I once accidently sent an email to all 972 people on the wide-area network when it was only supposed to go to the executive officer.

There was no name given for the Card game they were playing in Shindig.

But if you wander over the Firefly board on Fox. You will find and thread called Firefly Poker where the Browncoats over there are working on makeing a playable game for us. Creating a deck and rules. The whole nine yards.

Don't know when It will be done. But go on over and check it out.

Not sure about the strip poker, but Truth or Dare could be fun.

Actually one of my favotite games is a drinking game called I Never. You all sit around with the drinl of your choice and you say something you have "never" done. Anyone who has, has to take a drink. (and if you actually have done it, you drink too) It always starts out innocently enough..."I never bungee jumped" and such, but after a while, you start on the sex stuff.

Yep, we have got a game that seems to work on paper, I just need to design and test the cards in actual play now.

The name we have chosen for the game is Pia Long (Paper Dragon)

Here is how the game works:

6 suits of 12 cards (72 total)

With 6 suits in our game, it may be good to divide the cards into 3 colors, say Red, Black and Yellow, with 2 suits in each color.

Black - Plum, Peach.
Red - Orange, Apple.
Yellow - Apricot, Banana.

We could also use solid color icons, making it easier to distinguish between similar looking, but differently colored, fruits.

Ranks:
1-8 spots, Ace can be high or low.
Tortoise, Unicorn, Phoenix, Dragon.

6 tall cards, one for each suit. Any cards matching the suit of the claimer are wild.

Tall is revealed after ante, can be claimed by a player instead of a discard/draw.

Dealer is forced to claim the tall if no other player does.

Game follows Draw Poker rules unless otherwise stated.

==============================

Symbolic meanings:

Plum (Mei, Li)
The five petals of the plum tree symbolize the five gods of good luck. The plum tree, pine, and bamboo are the "Three Friends in Winter".

Peach (Tao)
A symbol for longevity, the peach is the most symbolic of any tree or fruit. It's tree wood and color keeps demons at bay, and its flower petals could cast spells on men.

Apricots (Shing) can stand for or mean a beautiful woman. Apricots originated in China. The modern varieties aren’t that different from what the Chinese grew several thousand years ago. Confucius retired to a simple cottage in the small city of Qufu, where he taught his philosophy to his disciples under the shade of an apricot tree.

The Orange (Cherng) is a prayer or wish for good fortune. That is why it is probably the most common food offering. As a harbinger of wishes for good luck, they are often eaten on the second day of the New Year. Why not the first, because once an Emperor distributed oranges to his officials on the second day of the New Year. Thus you are also wishing for officialdom if you eat them on this day.

Bananas (Shiang Jiau) found on some offering altars are there for other reasons. This fruit's leaves are one of the fourteen precious items to scholars. So on the offering table or altar, you are finding a wish for education, brilliance in work or school, or a related thought.

Apples (Pyng Guoh) have meaning, too. They symbolize peace. The word for apple in Chinese is ping, the homonym of ping is peace. Should you wonder what a homonym is, think of the word bear, the big four-legged animal and then think bear as in to bear fruit. Now the blossom of the apple is different; it stands for beauty. If you see one in a picture along with magnolias, the meaning is a hope that your house be honored and rich (with beauty).

4 Celestial Beasts:
The Ssu Ling are the four spiritual creatures of Chinese myth. These creatures are the unicorn Ch'i-lin, the bird Feng-huan, the tortoise Gui Xian, and the dragon Long.

The Ch'i-lin or Unicorn has a deer's body, an ox's tail, horses hooves, and a single horn. The Ch'i-lin appeared only before the birth or death of a great man.

The Feng-Huang, or phoenix, was a bird with radiant feathers. It had an enchanting song. The Feng-huang appeared when good fortune was propitious.

The tortoise Gui Xian was a symbol of a long life and righteousness. When it was a thousand years old it was able to speak the human language. They were used to foretell the future.

The dragon Long, also bringer of good fortune, was the symbol of the power of the emperor. Dragons ruled the water: seas, rivers, and the rain-clouds.

Each one of the four spiritual creatures of the Chinese myth stands for one of the symbols on the compass. The Ch'i-lin was the western point of the compass. The Feng-huang was the southern point of the compass. The tortoise, along with the bird, ruled the north, and the dragon symbolized the east.
