OK, a month or so back I saw Serenity. My first impression - like Star Wars but with better dialogue.

I then buy the DVD of Firefly and all I can say is wow! I can't get the characters or the stories or even the bloody theme tune out of my head.

Anyway, I'm one of those weird types that thinks too much about things, and what I'm thinking at the moment is "How are Firefly and Serenity linked?"

For instance ****SPOILERS**** I though Firefly would end with River being recaptured, as the opening of Serenity sees her being busted out again by Simon. So:

• Is the opening scene of Serenity (the movie) a retelling of the original River break out (which wasn't shown in the series and didn't involve Simon)?

I also found it a bit weird that in the movie, it seems like Simon and River have only just joined the ship, yet the story of Mal/Inara's relationship continues.

Any explanations greatly appreciated.

JACQUI

Serenity is set about six months after the last episode "Objects in Space" on the DVD set. There is a series of three comics which cover the time in between, explaining why and how Book left, the leaving of Inara, what happened to the guys with blue hands... etc...

It's a little bit of mind twisting, but the movie opens with a flashback in flashback in a flashback.

The teacher explaining the Universe to the kids, which also explains it to the audience just joining... then the breakout, which turns into the Operative watching a file on the breakout. Yes, it's the original breakout.

The relationships were set up again for Serenity, to exposit them a bit for new audiences, so yes, the Mal/Simon dynamic was a little off, but still very believable.

I, for one, like to fanwank away that although they'd come a long way within the DVD set, the new acknowledgement of River's abilities brought about new problems in regards to Mal's plans Vs Simon's plans, which explains why they were so abrupt and combative with each other.

Ditto what Jacqui said.

Plus, as Mal says early in the movie, pickings have been slim over the months between the end of the series and the start of Serenity. That's due, in no small part, to the fact that he's harboring Alliance fugitives. So he's more than normally anxious and on edge. Tempers are frayed.

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

EMBERS

Jayneiac:
Joss transitioned the TV show 'Firefly'
with the movie 'Serenity'
with a comic book put out by Dark Horse (a three book series) which bridges that gap....

you can still buy the original comic books through midtown comics (they are in Manhattan but they are online and they ship)
in Jan or Feb Dark Horse will bring the comics out together as a graphic novel....

also, while on the subject, look at my signiture and make sure you watch the River Tam interview sessions (done while she was at the Academe!)

**********************************************
watch the R. Tam Session vids: http://www.hittarivertam.nu/
and buy the 'Serenity' comics published by Dark Horse,
and have you joined the Browncoats yet?
