I was thinking.. I wonder if universal (who has movie rights for Serenity) could be coaxed into making heaps of Firefly(Serenity) movies that go straight to DVD? Sort of like reviving the series by bypassing Fox's cuckhold on the show.

The main set is unchanging(Serenity herself) so not much money is needed each time for building sets. Surely they could make lots of movies relatively cheaply and make a killing on DVD sales?

Sound feasible?

Someone cleverer than me should follow this up with Universal and Joss!

Not one comment.. Has everyone given up all hope?

Or do I smell?

It's definitely the smell ... no not really, more like a delicate aroma ...

Not sure what I think about it, hence no comment ... My fear would be that straight to DVD movies usually suck rather significantly ...

It's not that the movie itself would suck... it probaby wouldn't get as much publicity, it would be difficult to rope in new viewers since someone would have to buy the movie every time they wanted to just check it out, and it would also get fairly expensive for us poorer fans that are trying not to stoop to downloading Firefly online.

I think the only way for survival is to advertise better. I wouldn't heve even known Firefly exhisted if my friends hadn't shoved it down my throat.

Fox did a hirrble job of advertisement, and truthfully no ono who doesn't already know about Firefly watches Sci-Fi. The movie was a good start, though even that wasn't advertised very well.

Someone needs to do something like toss fliers everywhere, or give out free posters everywhere... or sell cheap novelty lunchboxes to grade schoolers.

Wow... grammar/spelling bad. Time to sleep.

Oh? One word...Slither. Admittedly haven't seen it, but the trailer was enough to make me decide I'll not be wasting 2 hours of life that I'll never get back!

"Something's wrong with me...!" Wow...that's that incomparable Whedon dialogue we all know and love!

Peace, love, and soul...

Joss Whedon has nothing to do with Slither - it was written and directed by James Gunn. The only connection to Joss is that Nathan Fillion happens to be in it.

That's an awesome idea. We so should make cheap novelty lunchboxes.

Thanks for squaring me away on that...Could've sworn his name was referenced in association with the *coughs* film in question. I will defer to you, though.

Do Fox have the rights to just the title (firefly) or the concepts as well?

I'm known as DEATH eVADER on 5 forums, but I think DaisyCutter sounds more devastating. I'm also known as The Jackel, but thats another story altogether.

Good question Daisy. I too would like to know exactly what rights Fox and Universal have.

I thought, in an interview, that in the beginning (when 'Firefly' was canceled and he couldn't find another network)
Joss was totally up for 'straight to DVD'
of course now that he has had a taste of the bigger budget
and the big screen
he hopes to do his sequels for wide release....

anyway, I'm not sure he is in a big hurry to let other people take over his franchise...
and he, himself, is committed to 'Wonder Woman' and 'Goners'
so I'm guessing we'll have to be patient here for a little while
(after all, 'Serenity' is STILL in the theaters.)

HANTHER

Just an idea here. As indicated above, straight to DVD has generally been for movies that suck. It's more or less thought of as the DVD version of "Vanity Publishing". But maybe that's not the case so much any longer. Disney has been doing straight to DVD stuff for some time. Obviously this is not cineplex quality and I have not seen any of them, but my impression is that, for the kiddie market they are aimed at, they are a decent product. On a more positive note, I have read someplace, maybe here, that Paramount is setting up a made for DVD division geared to releasing half a dozen features to DVD per year. But a more interesting development is that George Lucas has announced a Star Wars TV series. That is not the interesting part. The interesting part is Lucas plans to make the series in house, much like the three recent big screen features. Then he will offer them to the networks for a straight yes to accept or no to pass. This changes the networks from in a position to dictate content and provide financing for content to nothing more that simple distributors. There is little doubt the networks will jump on the chance to have a Star Wars series, but in the unlikely event they pass Lucas says he will release direct to DVD. Certainly a Star Wars series will be no better or worse than the movies. This is Lucas, after all. But Lucas direct to DVD is certainly not sucky DVD by commercial standards.
What this does in practical terms is to change the perception of direct to DVD from product that is second rate to product that is first class. What this means for Firefly/Serenity is that Universal is certainly watching the market, most specially with this year's box office and someplace at the home office someone is looking very closely at the market and wondering if Firefly with its rabid fan base could be a working vehicle for direct to DVD from Universal in the new market.
Just something to think about.
