I'm new to the discussions but I was wondering if anyone has gone out and purchased a copy of the Firefly tv soundtrack? I got mine today but haven't had a chance to listen yet.

MALICIOUS

Mine was just shipped from Amazon today....I'm certain I will love it and play nothing else for weeks or months, even.

Mal-licious

I'm going to add cursing and the hurling about of things to my repertoire.

DONCOAT

I downloaded the mp3 version from Fox Music. It has 17 of the tracks; the CD version has more.

I love it, and it should be even better on CD (since mp3s use lossy compression and even high bitrate mp3 can't equal the original's quality).

Listening to the music is like reminiscing with an old friend. You know about everything you're hearing, but you love hearing it anyway. (Yes, I know -- that sounds like a line from the last scene of the movie!)

Today I listened to the Firefly soundtrack and the Serenity soundtrack back-to-back. Two very different kinds of music, but they both work. It took me awhile to warm up to Newman's compositions, but now I can't get them out of my head.

Edmondson I find more accessible, since I'm a fan of old-timey acoustic music already. There's more variety in the Firefly soundtrack, too, since it ranges from solo instruments to full-on driving orchestrations.

If there's anything about these soundtracks that's objectionable, it's that they are, well, soundtracks. For example, the main theme for Serenity is less than a minute long. Of course, the theme reoccurs in many variations in other parts of the soundtrack, and gets a longer reprise in the closing credits.

Now, if I could wave a wand, I'd convert the Serenity soundtrack into a long symphonic tone poem, rather than 20-odd short vignettes. Of course, as it is, you can relive the movie through the soundtrack, as certain tracks are very evocative of the on-screen action they accompanied.

In short, I recommend both the Firefly and Serenity soundtracks. Both are best heard on a good home sound system; they're too dynamic for listening in a car -- the quiet passages get drowned out by road noise.

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.
