Action Adventure Serenity

From Universal Studios Home Entertainment
’A triumph! A Thrillingly Original Science-Fiction Creation.’
- Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco
Chronicle

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A
band of intergalactic outlaws on the run emerge as the most
unlikely of heroes in the visually spectacular and thrilling
action adventure, Serenity, available on DVD and VHS on
December 20, 2005 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
Written and directed by Academy Award(R) and Emmy nominee
Joss Whedon, the creative genius behind “Buffy the Vampire
Slayer“ and “Angel,“ Serenity combines mind-blowing visual
effects with an ingenious plot and unforgettable characters
to take viewers on an edge-of-the-seat chase through
fantastic and dangerous new worlds. Based on Whedon’s cult
phenomenon television series “Firefly,“ this explosive
adventure features the series’ original cast including Nathan
Fillion (Dracula 2000, Saving Private Ryan), Gina Torres (The
Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Reloaded), Alan Tudyk (I,
Robot, “Into the West“) and Adam Baldwin (Men In Black, “The
Poseidon Adventure“). Serenity transports its audience into
a truly original, fully realized vision of mankind’s possible
future.
Set in a post-apocalyptic universe, Serenity finds
Captain Malcolm “Mal“ Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and the crew
of the rebel spaceship Serenity taking on both the all-
powerful Universal Alliance and the murderous Reavers --
cannibalistic savages living on the outskirts of
civilization -- as they fight to protect a beautiful young
fugitive with a deadly secret. Jam-packed with deleted
scenes, outtakes and more exclusive features, the DVD is
priced at $29.98 SRP. Preorder close is November 15, 2005.
INTER-GALACTIC ADVENTURE GARNERS STELLAR
REVIEWS
Serenity has been hailed by critics for its
originality, superb performances and non-stop action. Mark
S. Allen of UPN-TV/Premiere Radio Networks gushes, “Not since
The Matrix has a movie rocked so relentlessly!“ while Peter
Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle calls Serenity “A
triumph!“ “An absolute blast,“ raves John Procaccino of CBS-
TV, while Steve Head of IGN.com lauds the film’s “Ultra-cool
action.“ Tom Long of the Detroit News praises the “Slamming
action sequences.“
A WORLD OF EXTRAS
Exclusive bonus features on the DVD offer viewers a
deeper look into the brilliantly constructed universe of
Serenity.
- Deleted Scenes
- Outtakes
- Special Introduction by Joss Whedon -- The Oscar
(R) and Emmy-nominated
writer/director of Serenity.
- Re-lighting the Firefly
- What’s in a Firefly?
- Feature Commentary with Joss Whedon, creator
of “Buffy the Vampire
Slayer,“ “Angel“ and “Firefly.“
SYNOPSIS
A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on
the run. As assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of
Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find
themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless
military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy
anything -- or anyone -- to get the girl back and the
bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of
space. But, the greatest danger of all may be on their
ship. From the mind of Joss Whedon (“Buffy the Vampire
Slayer,“ “Angel“) comes a new edge-of-your-seat adventure
loaded with explosive battles, gripping special effects and
fantastic new worlds!

I figured that Joss would do a writer/director's commentary,
but I thought we would get a second, cast, commentary too!
I thought Adam Baldwin said they (Universal) had scheduled time for recording it??
I'm going to be so disappointed....
if I don't get my cast commentary!

actually I wanted 3 or 5 commentaries....
I'd love a CGI commentary
and a stunts coordinator commentary
and a set & costume designer commentary
(can you tell that I love commentaries?)

Embers, dearie, don't fret! You know how this works. They release the DVD with one commentary and couple extras, with an ugly cover. We all rush out and buy it ("Serenity Now!"). Then nine months down the road there's a thread titled "Serenity Special Edition coming soon!!!" It's more expensive, has an extra disk, and, of course, we all rush out and buy it.

You know, I'm wondering if the person who wrote that blurb saw the same movie I did. Even taking into account that blurbs are always a bit inaccurate, that's a bit much.

And yeah that cover is a real eyesore. Enough that I'll probably get it online rather than a brick and mortar store, since I don't think I'd care to be seen carrying it in public.

I don't know about MIB, but didn't he film a remake of the Poseidon Adventure that has yet to be released? I seem to remember it coming up during his talk at SFX this summer...

Edit: According to IMDb it's a TV movie airing November 20 in the US.

I don't know about an extras set. Usually a commentary of any kind is a good sign that there won't be an second DVD. Of course if the DVD sales skyrocket anything is possible. Another idea could be for Joss to create a version with filmed additional scenes and make a "Serenity: Browncoat Edition" with more references to Blue Sun, some table scenes, more humor. Not the film Joss wanted but the one, many fans wanted and much longer than the theatres would have allowed.

In the Press release, what does the

SRP mean after the Price mean.

Also Pre-Order Close: November 15, 2005

What does that mean?

Does that mean a person cannot pre-order
after November 16, 2005 and has to wait for Dec.
20th?

Or is that Pre-Ordering for stores only?

What purpose does the Pre-Order Close
serve?

Does it have something to do with figuring
out how many Dvds -Widescreen/Dvds-Full Screen/ or VHS-Full Screen to manufacture?

Feb 8th DVD release for Australia! Pfft.. Thats too gorram long to wait. Why the hell couldnt they have a world wide release? Well.. I suppose we did get to see the official theatre release of Serenity a full 36hrs before you Americans so it just may be poetic justice..

Still..

Universal have said we Australians will get a "special release" cause we are mighty. Specifically they say.. Here at Universal Pictures Australia we are very excited to be planning the DVD release of Serenity, which is scheduled for February 8, 2006. The Australian version of the DVD will be unique from other countries, in that it will feature some additional pieces of bonus content that will not appear on the US version. We are in the process of finalising the extra content and we will let you know exactly what you will find on the Australian DVD shortly. We are also looking at creative options for some special packaging and we will also update you on this in the near future. Rest assured though that we will be delivering a unique DVD for this market!

Sounds Shiny! I may have to order in a US version and buy a Australian version when it is released.

Captain Malcolm “Mal“ Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and the crew

Post-apocalyptic may not be entirely inaccurate, but it has little relevance to Firefly/Serenity, not enough to take up space in so short a blurb. Secondly, Serenity ain't a rebel ship--she's a transport ship (sometimes a smuggler), and in any case, the war's over. As for taking on both the Alliance and the Reavers.. well, that's the part of the blurb I wish wasn't so accurate and relevant. Sigh.

New packaging! Maybe because the US DVD art is horrible. New bonus content! Probably just the trailers but hey I don't care. I hope the UK gets this version too, possible since we don't have a confirmed date yet.

About Byrd101' comment (I'm not even going to give it any respect by quoting it).

I'm always amazed by my own naivete. I really don't understand someone trolling around making the same post everywhere. I mean I can understand not liking the movie or thinking that there won't be a sequel but just reposting the same comments on a different topic. Is the person just lazy. Are they just anti-Firefly? Or even worse are they pro-Saw? I really don't understand the mentality of somebody who would want to sequel to a horror movie.

I hope for a sequel but I understand no matter what it will be an uphill process. Even if there is no Firefly/Serenity sequel, I think there will be another sci-fi western someday. I think Joss proved that the concept is viable but it just needs to wait until a method can be made of making money from directly selling to fans. Special effects costs will continue to decline. Maybe the next Steven Spielberg is eleven years old, watching a "Jaynestown" right now with his folks, saying that he wants to do when he grows up. Until that time, I still have my DVD's of Firefly.

Really? I've heard that the Australian release is getting at least something extra, though the press release was vague and could just mean having the trailers on the DVD (packaging was mentioned though).

I'm going to hold out for the Region 2 DVD in the hopes that we get a much nicer DVD cover. And yes this *does* matter as it will make it easier to convince people to borrow my DVD and watch the movie, crappy action film is not what Serenity is but it's what the cover kinda implies.
