I've mentioned this before, but after watching the trailer for Done the Impossible, I can now show y'all what I meant about the color scheme in the movie version of Serenity's Infirmary...

Firefly

Serenity

That seem right to you?

They must have repainted after Jayne went looking for something.

I'm pretty sure medical facilities need to be white (or close to it) so that you can see where you need to wipe up the blood.

They had it right in the series, so why change it?

I'm thinking they decided to go with 'gunmetal' for the movie to better give the impression that life on Serenity is pretty spartan and basic. No frills, no bells, no whistles, with the only color in the place is where Kaylee painted the common area. It's a subtle reinforcer.

The original Firefly sets were torn down in early 2003. For Serenity, they rebuilt the ship as best they could based on images in the DVDs, but there are distinct changes.

Many folks have commented that the sets in the film are colder and less welcoming than those in Firefly. I feel that this was a deliberate metaphorical statement. Life has gotten harder for the crew in Serenity, Mal has grown colder and more closed off, and the ship reflects this coldness. The ship, like the cappy, is not as much fun to be around in the movie. It's a subtle but interesting effect.

As for why it looks different within the 'verse, the standard fanwank is usually that they remodeled with the money they made off the Lassiter. And that works for me.

I agree with the suggestion that a lot of it is in the lighting. The 'glow' the original infirmary had appeared to come from the lighting in the shelves. There was only one scene with the infirmary; maybe they decided to spend the money elsewhere?

And to add to what Static said - it definitely gave it more of a rough appearance. I always thought the (Firefly) infirmary was a bit too clean, although that may have just been Simon's influence...

It's a recreation of the Firefly set. The original sets were struck after the series was cancelled .

thats too bad that they destroyed the sets...but they did an excellent job re-creating them (I hardly noticed and actually assumed they did just re-use it)...and honestly, I didn't even notice the differences until the original poster posted pictures :)

Well, the floor and ceiling are obviously not white in the movie, as they obviously were in the series.

OPTICAL EFFECTS
A room painted in a light color will seem larger than that same room painted in a dark color. This is because light colors tend to recede while dark colors advance. Warm colors seem closer while cool colors seem farther away. A room with a low ceiling painted white will seem higher than a ceiling painted dark.
