I know this is way off-topic, but I figured, why not? I recently published a book through a company called Authorhouse. Now, as a writer, I'm not even fit to shine Joss's shoes, but if you want a brief diversion, please check it out! It's my very first book, and I would really like it to do well. It's available for sale through www.authorhouse.com right now, and will soon be on sale through other retailers. It's called Book of Legends, by Amy Dillen. Thanks for your time!

I give to you the Seeker of Serenity, the Valkyrie Warrior, the Gourmet Cook and the Truth Scoper.

You can also go to http://www.lulu.com/ they will publish novels, videos, music CD and just about anything else. You have have people pay or Download for free. You don't need an agent to publish. Anyone can publish through LULU. They just don't like Fan Fic to be published through the site.

Mmm. I would love to publish one of my books, but self-publishing makes me leery. You basically have to do all the ad-work yourself, right? And they're only available on-line? Are they hard copies or just for download? (I suppose I could actually read the website info, but I'm in a hurry. Gotta go to my French course in a bit.) Congrats though! So happy for you!

Actually, with Authorhouse, they're available for sale in bookstores too. And you can get hardcovers, softcovers, whatever you want. Plus, they'll do a lot of advertising for you. I just felt it was easier than sending out 3000 things to regular publishers and getting rejected/ignored. Thanks for the congrats!

Very cool - How are you marketing your book. One idea is to push it more on Amazon. I suggest uploading an image to Amazon & putting some info on their website.

Here's something to think about. Saw this article on SCIFI.COM. If the story is good, you might want to try writing for donations.

Ethshar Finds Internet Success

Hugo Award-winning fantasy author Lawrence Watt-Evans told SCI FI Wire that he put the ninth entry in his Legends of Ethshar series, The Spriggan Mirror, on the Internet, available for free download or for a nominal donation, after his publisher declined to pick it up. The results were surprisingly successful.

Watt-Evans said in an interview that he drew his inspiration from the "Storyteller's Bowl" concept and the Street Performer Protocol.

"Every week from mid-April through October of 2005 I posted [a] chapter," Watt-Evans said. "Anyone who wanted to could donate money or just read it for free. I told readers that each chapter cost $100; if I had that much by the end of the week, the next chapter would go up. If I hadn't received enough contributions, the next chapter would be held back until I did. I also promised that if the novel was finished, everyone who had donated more than $15 would receive a copy of the finished book. To my pleased surprise, I never had to delay a chapter; money came in steadily, in donations ranging from 50 cents to $500, and the novel was completed on schedule. The finished book is still a few months away, but it's coming, and more than 150 readers will be getting their copies sometime in 2006."

Watt-Evans said that he enjoyed the project, but also at times found it difficult to keep up with. "It was exciting, and for the most part a great deal of fun, but it was also sometimes wearing," he said. "I had to make sure I always had a chapter ready to go at the end of the week, no matter what else I was doing."

Why didn't his publisher, Tor, pick up the book? "Tor dropped the series for entirely sound reasons, but I loved Ethshar too much to give it up," he said. "Mainstream publishers aren't generally interested in picking up a dropped series, [so] I looked for some [other] way to make it happen. I knew I had fans who wanted to see more."

Watts-Evans added: "When I created Ethshar more than 20 years ago, I intended it to be something I'd do for the rest of my life. Every time I go back to it after a hiatus, I remember all over again how much fun it is to write. I never intended to stop." Watt-Evans' next traditionally published novel is The Wizard Lord, due out in March 2006 from Tor.

SerenityValley - No, I don't have to pay for anything except my initial fee. If the bookstores want my books, they have to pay Authorhouse in order to get some. I get royalties for any that they order, even if they don't sell.

ShepherdEric - I am trying to get articles in all the local newspapers, newsletters, etc. around here. Also, Authorhouse is putting an ad in the Bloomsbury Review about my book, which is circulated to about 125 000 people. Then, my cousin's sending a mass email around to everybody she knows to push it, and I put it on here. I'll have to try pushing it on Amazon more. Thanks.

Haken - Interesting article. I'll have to think about that. Don't know if it would work without a previous fan base.

I'm gonna post the preview of my book that's on the Authorhouse website, so people don't have to go digging for it.

Part 1:

Siralus nodded slowly. “You can’t kill them before the spell is complete, and they can no longer stop it themselves. This world is done for. But you, Queen Tanoya, and you, Aldrain, you can still survive.”

“But how?” Aldrain whispered, not seeing any way for them to survive.

“You can combine what’s left of your magic force to send yourselves to a different world. There, you can start over again. I told you, it’s not your fate to die here and now. Hurry, you haven’t much time.”

Aldrain looked up. Siralus was right. The light was now engulfing the entire castle and was shooting straight up towards the sky, where it began to spread across and engulf the sky as well. The other magicians had seen it and were redoubling their efforts to destroy the castle, though it was obviously too late.

“I told you,” Tanoya said, “I don’t have full command of my powers yet. I cannot do it.”

“Yes, you can,” Siralus said fiercely. “You always could, from the moment you were born. You’ve just been afraid to try. Do it now or you will die.”

Tanoya hesitated for a second, then turned to Aldrain. “He’s right,” she said. “You and I must try to escape. Help me, Aldrain, please.”

“But – what about everyone else?” Aldrain asked, looking at the magicians all around them.

“You only have enough power to send yourselves,” Siralus said. “There’s no time to waste, Aldrain. Take control of your destiny now!”

Part 2:

The Jackal yanked his sword out of her stomach and she dropped to one knee, bright red blood dripping through her blue tunic. He raised the sword in an obvious gesture that he was going to finish the job, when Griff saw something bright flash in the Wildcat’s hand. Next minute, the Jackal was stumbling backwards with a dagger sticking out of his throat. The Wildcat pushed herself to her feet with the aid of one sword, then chopped off the Jackal’s head with the other sword. Members of the crowd nearby screamed as they were spattered with the Jackal’s blood and his head flew past them. The Wildcat dropped to her knees again, clutching her side.

Without even thinking, Griff vaulted over the balcony railing and dropped the ten feet to the ground below. He heard a faint thud and looked to his right to see that Jokam had jumped down also.

Just as Griff reached the Wildcat’s side, he heard alarmed shouts. He looked up to see people in black tunics jumping over the fence, heading straight for him.

There.

It's a good thing you bumped this or it would have been lost on me.

Queeny I would gladly buy your book if I could figure out how, but the Authorhouse.com site doesn't have an obvious means to do so. I clicked thru the links and perhaps it's plain to see but I'm just missing it. I can't seem to find the means to buy "Book of Legends," nor a search option for titles. I are confused.

I'll keep searching thru the site (hell I see there is a shopping cart link where you go to pay for things), but thru the mindless misunderstanding of how to properly market a "search and buy" strategy, Authorhouse.com refuses to sell me your book.

Don't worry. That's all the more reason to believe they are truly about supporting authors. They have no clue how to sell books, but love to support writers. It's just so friggin' annoying.

Tell me where to go and I'll buy it.

I read incessantly. I have a library of over 10,000 books (at last count) ~ and I've read nowhere near that many.

I also have the priceless benefit of an endless supply of books. A true paradise for the curious mind. Or a prison, depending on how you view it.

Few of my books stray outside the realm of math, physics, mechanical engineering, etc, so yours will be a treat to the senses for me. If you are a fan of FF, then you have a something out of the ordinary in common with me.

Wow, I'm really depressed right now. Here's why, for anyone who might actually care.

1. I couldn't get my book published through mainstream because I'm a first-time author, so no one would even look at my stuff, let alone publish it. Also, lots of them aren't even interested in fantasy.

2. So I got it self-published. This, however, apparently carries with it the stigma that my book is crap. It may be crap, I don't know, but I don't appreciate people assuming that without looking at it.

3. The Edmonton Journal refuses to do a story on my book (see reason above), so this greatly limits exposure/possible sales.

4. Since no one will buy my book because it's self-published, I won't be able to generate the necessary sales to get someone from the mainstream publishing world interested in picking up my book.

5. *Poof* Dream shatters, I'm depressed and am going to go get drunk now.

Hmm...

Ya know what I love about you Queeny (and why I bought your book)?

You at least have guts enough to attempt it. Question is, do you have staying power?

If this is your first attempt at writing, expect it to fail. Nobody in the last 100 years has come from obscurity and roared to life direct from the printing presses.

Well, not entirely true. Some people have the benefit of powerful connections or incredibly fortuitous timing. More likely to get struck by lightning then win with the timing lotto.

If your first book fails, keep trying. Try and try again. Very cliche, I know. But, every successful author had to fire a few blanks, take a few bullets, and keep on blazing away.

Your book hasn't arrived yet but I'm looking forward to reading it. If it sucks I'll say so.

I never forsake my honesty for the sake of kindness, so expect true praise or an honest critique.

I've got two more in the works already. I'll do what has to be done. I just thought I'd whine about it first. Now excuse me while I find a suit of armor with which to protect myself from criticism.

Edit: If I fail it will never be from lack of trying. Also, if I become a best selling author, Edmonton Journal will FEEL MY WRATH.

Yes Queeny but beware. Abuse the bump thing and it will be removed. Others will emulate you if they think their post is so important everyone has to read it. And nearly everyone will always think that. Calculation. They'll eventually choke the life out of these forums. Too much manipulation is counterproductive.

Haken will have to code the site to economize bandwidth or see it strangled.

If your book is worthy, it'll buzz. If it buzz's, you won't need to bump. That will come naturally.

Let nature take it's course.

And if it doesn't buzz, write one that will. Like I said... try and try again.
