Top Ten Favorite Albums(or bands) by OldHag

Wow, you like a lot of really good bands...I mean you even know bands like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Isis, and all the Patton bands. In fact, I like every band you listed except for maybe 2.

Hmm, top 10...I can't do this in any real order so as I think them -

Wow, that's hard...I have a bunch of runners up like Filter, APC, 3EB, Sunna, Porcupine Tree, ohGr, Opeth, mewithoutYou, Live, Deadsy, Between the Buried and Me, Econoline Crush...on and on. I surprise people sometimes because I like really heavy stuff, but I also listen to a lot of soft stuff, including classical and jazz.

I see you didn't list Catch 33 as a Meshuggah album...don't like it? It's probably my fav by them.

As for favorite album, I generally say it's The Fragile by NIN. It really resonates with me. It's a lot of peoples' least favorite NIN album, though ;(

An album I listen to a lot (especially when I need cheering up) is Remembering Never's Women and Children Die First. I know it sounds harsh but they're a great band with a positive message.

Oh, and you ever get a chance to see SYL/Devin live, do it. The guy is insane.

I know I'm going to kick myself later for forgetting some bands, but oh well ;D

I'm not much of an emo fan. There are exceptions like Mewithoutyou and The Mars Volta. But as a whole they are just a bunch of whiners. I love catch 33 but it's not my favorite DEI and Chaosphere are better than it, but it's a great album nontheless.

As for The Fragile I think that it ranks up there with some of the best Albums ever, but like i said i can't put all of my favs on the top ten. Just the most important.

I love jazz music, I mean you kind of have to if you like intricate music like The End and Dillenger Escape Plan. That is their derivitive I also love orchestral and even some opera. But My fav. artist would have to be Mike Patton. The man has the most creative mind ever. But anyways, I would like to hear from more people about this.

I don't know alot but the one thing i do know about is music.

Yeah, I know what you mean about jazz. That's how I usually explain the eclectic tastes I have. I like what I like because it's usually complex and layered (jazz, DEP, etc.). That's not to say everything I listen to is complex, though ;) I'll have to check out The End.

I've found my progression in the past 4 years has been industrial -> metal -> and now I'm getting more into hardcore, which could be considered regression, but I don't care.

-edit-without Catch 33 i think Meshuggah would be just shy of my top 10...I think it's amazing that you can understand the singer's english better when he's screaming/singing than when he's just speaking irl, haha.

I *love* Visual Audio Sensory Theater. My fav songs have to be Pretty When You Cry, Touched and Somwhere Else To Be (it's a hard list to narrow down). This is an album you can *sing* to and really let go.

In my honest opinion, Pretty When You Cry has to have the most disturbing music video ever made.

Not to be mean, but this my opinion and i'm sure that some other people agree, I'm just going to say it, your selection is boring. Classic from that time period( 1996-1999) is something like Faith no More's "Album of the Year" or Tom Waits "Mule Variations" not garbage.

As for sheryl crow, Rob Zombie and Sarah McLachlan they are as boring as Matchbox 20.

But hey everyone has there likes and dislikes.I guess i could admit that Sarah McLachlan can play the piano pretty well. That's about it though.

I have to back up the boring selection, in my boring right wing way.

1. No Doubt is awesome, and that includes them being good. Not as good as they used to be, but that's a given for any band. Over-commercialization is the big destroyer of art. But we all know that. Also anything Ska, or old Gen. Punk. X-ray specs, the clash, ramones, decent stuff.

2. Decent alternative. I love Rob Thomas/ Matchbox 20, I don't care if someone else thinks that's boring. Nirvana never wowed me, but it's okay. I like System of a Down.

3. Swing bands like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Brian Setzer, etc.

4. Cheezy 80s pop. I love this stuff, it's like popcorn. I mean in a world where music is food, the Beatles are Tandoori Chicken, Pink Floyd is some sort of weird bisque with black beans and some other stuff in it, and cheezy 80s music like "Hey Mickey" is popcorn.

5. Classic rock, CCR or Pink Floyd. But nothing that was made to be played on 8 track on a 9 hour bus trip. Except maybe the dead. In moderation.

6. Goth rock. Siouxsie and the Banshees. Not dreary dark depressing goth stuff, but like stuff Satan comes down to dance to. Music made by bands who spent way too much time playing D&D, like gwar or night. Or guys who dress up like vikings.

7. Techno.

8. Old stuff, patsy cline, connie francis, frank sinatra, or retro covers like diana krall.

9. Country with life. I don't care for the old "classic, when country was country" or whatever too much, I pretty much pass on it, I don't care for the whole my life in a nutshell perspective stuff either. I don't walk the beaches of cheyene. I have friends in low places, or faith hill, shania, as long as it has life pep, what not.

10. Joss. I think he's genuinely good. I'm surprised no one said that yet.

I made this thread specifically for people to discuss and argue about how and why they like thier own music selection. it's not that i'm trying to be mean, but that's the way i feel about bands like that. But, instead of just saying "well pooey on you cuz you don't like my music" just explain to everyone why you do. I don't like those bands cuz there boring, TO ME! that's all. As Browncoats, when someone says to us that they don't like Serenity or Firefly what do we do? We dont' just say for them to shut up( well, i don't anyways) and i'm sure you don't either, i tell them the selling points of why it's important to me.

At work i get all the time, " how the hell can you listen to this shit?" Then i tell them how and why i like it. Soooo, instead of just getting mad, explain. If you don't want to explain, then that's fine too.

I like to get opinions out of people. It's good to discuss things and talk about them with other people, that's why this site is here. I noticed that someone explained on there why they liked what they liked. I was interested to read that. So enough of my blammering. Don't get offended. Everyone has opinions.

You should ckeck "The End" out their drummer is one of the most amazing drummers out there.

I would say that your taste has progressed over the years. I used to only listen to only classical music once upon a time. But, that's changed. I still love clssical music though. If you think that the lead singer of Meshuggah is good( which i think he's one of the best) check out Mare. They have only an EP out right now but at some points it just sounds like he's ripping his voice box apart. It's gorram crazy!

Other Bands that suit my fancy: Pig Destroyer, Estradasphere, Eyvind Kang, NIN, Green Day(newest album) Murder by Death, Jeff Buckley, Brazzaville, Tin Hat Trio, Tom Waits, Sepultura, Tenacious D, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Kyuss, The Melvins, and more and more....

This thread is so way off topic.

The reason I did that very a$$inine thing I just did was that I noticed a few things I didn't notice before.

Overall I like getting new band ideas, but also this.

1. The thread initiater is such a newbie that they are more of a newbie than I am. And I'm a shiny green newbie.

2. The thread poster/newbie slammed a less newbie on some essential parts of that person's life. This is totally different from slamming their firefly theories.

3. It's okay to say that No Doubt sucks or Rob Thomas is boring, but that's your personal opinion, just don't say it to my face. Just thought I'd say that.

4. This thread is so very off topic. It should move to real world section of this site, or to some other site. All this is doing now is alienating people from each other, like...

Ok. That's cool. This is where the Top Ten Movies is so that's where i posted this one also. I wasn't "slamming" it either. I feel that i made myself pretty clear that we all were going to say how we felt about what we posted on on this thread and that's what i've done.

And you know i do hate the whole "newbie" thing. It's rediculous. It has such a cliquesh feel to it. Obviously you take pride in belonging to something longer than other indiviuals so you feel the need to isolate the ones that are newer to something than you. i've never used the word newbie and i never will.How is it that you justify being able to speak your mind more if you've belonged to something longer? I guess that concept is beyond me. The word "newbie" is such an idiotic word and isolates people from the rest of everyone else. So anyways, I enjoy this site alot and the opinions that are posted here, that's why i visit this site all the time. I disagree with some of them and i don't say anything. But it's kinda sad if you can't stand for someone to tell you just straight up that they don't like what you like, It's pretty sad. Like I said I get it all the time. It's called critisism and you have to learn to live with it. I'm not sorry if you can't take criticism well but it's the real world. I'm not trying to make any enemies by posting what i say. I'm just speaking my mind, just what you and everyone else does on here. Sooooo, anyways, This doesn't mean i don't like you any less, just chill out. I wasn't going to reply to this, because I don't want to start a flame war or continue negativity in threads, but I'm just going to comment here.

That may have been your intention, but that's not what you said. There was no 'I feel' or 'to me' in your original reply. You said "those bands are boring and others agree". I did not say "phooey to you 'cause you don't like my music", for all intents and purposes I said "phooey to you for attacking my tastes".

Personally, I don't care if you think my list is boring. Everyone has their own tastes. Nor do I feel particularly in need to "explain" why I like the music I do, my enjoyment needs no justification from anyone ("poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another" - Madonna). Much the same as I don't feel the need to explain why I like to drink Diet Coke over normal Coke, or eat apples over bananas. It's a personal thing.

I will, though, to satisfy curiosity: I like the music I do, because I like to identify with the emotion in the lyrics, in the voice of the performer and the music. I like music I can sing to, something I can just open my vocal chords and let loose with. Emotion in this kind of music moves me.

I, too, have issues with the word 'newbie' when used as an inclusive/exclusive thing. I'm fairly new to this site (from about May/Junish this year I think) and don't really consider myself any more or less a part of it than someone who just joined today, last minute, or three years ago.

Again, not really what you said, but how you said it. I wasn't angry or upset, I just stated that it really was unfair that you worded your reply the way you did.

Another clarification (which should in no way be construed as anger or an attack), when I said 'classic' next to Garbage and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, I should have been clearer. I didn't mean classic for the time period, including the entire gamut of music for that time period, I mean classic for Garbage, as in... their first two albums. I think their first two are their best two. Same with the Chilli Peppers, their albums *before* Californication, not after.

I really don't want this to be a 'feel bad' thread, 'cause it's a great idea.

It looks like I'm going to be in the minority on many of these, but here goes.

1.) Barenaked Ladies - "Maybe You Should Drive" is their best, but they're all good.

2.) Garth Brooks - "Wild Horses," "Ropin' the Wind," and then the rest.

3.) Matchbox Twenty - I'm not sure why, but I can listed to these guys for hours.

4.) The Goo Goo Dolls - Same, "Gutter Flower" is easily my favorite.

5.) Queen - absolutely classic

6.) Brooks & Dunn - They're just regular guys who happen to sing. Some of the best country out there.

7.) Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - classic

8.) Metallica - great driving music, "S&M" especially.

9.) Tonic - "Sugar"

10.) Soundtracks from John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and/or Danny Elfman

Well, just like to clear things up. First off, I was the one who started the Top 10 movies thread, which I realize was off-topic. However, that was precisely my point. I didn't want another thread where everybody's attacking everybody cuz they did/didn't like Serenity. So I thought I'd start something fun where everyone could feel free to post their own opinions, not be attacked, and find out what others liked and maybe find some new movies. Now the top 10 threads have degenerated into precisely the kind of thing I was trying to avoid. How about we all try to get along, enjoy life and have fun?

I think we can all do that. I take back what i said. I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Jacqui you don't need to explain yourself one but. It's cool. i guess there's a fine line between being critical and being nitpicky.

Heh I like what one guy in here said about "my music is the best and you must all kneel to it" I think that's the way we all feel about our choice of movies of music or anything that's of sentimental value to us. I can understand why some people may not like Lamb of God or Mueshuggah (very hard) or not like sheryl crow or sarah McLachlan ( very soft) but I guess there's one thing that I don't understand is how anyone couldn't like serenity or firefly. I told my frield the other day that a person with a brain the size of a peanut could see that Firefly is good. I just don't see how you couldn't think it's not good.

Some people listen to different things for different reasons. I listen to my music cuz i appreciate the drummer or the bassist. Some others listen to music to relax and have something on in the background( which I occasionally do). I guess maybe a more proper question to ask would be is why you like what you like? So anyways, hope this cheers up this thread a little more. You know, send the good vibes thoughout the room and what not.

I like Wilco, The Wallflowers, The Shins, and The Smashing Pumpkins out of your list. I haven't heard some of the others.

Best drummer I've ever heard is Dave Weckl, from the Dave Weckl band. It's fusion jazz. The guy is insanely good. Next best drummer has to be Gene Hoglan (the Atomic Clock or The Man with Four Arms and Three Legs) from Strapping Young Lad. I'll have to check The End out for sure. One of the things I like most in my music is dynamics, especially when it comes to rhythm. I love odd time signatures, sudden changes, asynchronous stuff, syncopated, etc. etc. I also like to hear math evident in music (Lateralus, etc.)

Sometimes that's Nickelback or Metallica, sometimes it's Destiny's Child. I'm not a fan of slow music cuz it brings me down. But that's just me. So anyways, that's my take.
