If you had to evaluate the main actors' acting ability and performances over the course of Firefly's first (and NOT last, gorramit!) season, how would you rank them? Here's my ranking:

Adam Baldwin (Jayne)
Nathan Fillion (Mal)
Gina Torres (Zoë)
Alan Tudyk (Wash)
Sean Maher (Simon)
Summer Glau (River)
Ron Glass (Book)
Morena Baccarin (Inara)
Jewel Staite (Kaylee)

Okay, here's my ranking!

Nathan Fillion (Mal)
Summer Glau (River)
Alan Tudyk (Wash)
Ron Glass (Book)
Sean Maher (Simon)
Morena Baccarin (Inara)
Jewel Staite (Kaylee)
Gina Torres (Zoë)
Adam Baldwin (Jayne)

But I think they're all amazing! Just think that Nathan Fillion is fab...he was great in Buffy too. Plus...sexy ass much! Hehe!

damn... I just couldn't do this one. Interesting topic though. I think even more amazing than the uniformly high quality of the acting, is the amazing casting. Each of the actors seems to have acting skills that perfectly match the character they are playing.

I have to say I thought for the most part the actors fell into their roles very well. If you've seen the first season of Buffy, you'll see there is a definite learning curve there. But the only complaints I really have with the Firefly cast is I think Summer Glau suffers occasional bouts of overacting, but for as new an actress as she is I think she does very well.
The only person I am completely unimpressed with is Morena Baccarin. I just saw Heart of Gold and

she wasn't at all believable when threatening to kill Burgess or expressing dismay at the murder of her friend, or that friendship in the first place.

I don't think she and Nathan have any chemisty either so their UST scenes kind of annoy me.

My list!

I'd have to say that most of the actors rank evenly as #1's, but if I had to choose....

Alan Tudyk (Wash)
Summer Glau (River)
Nathan Fillion (Mal)
Gina Torres (Zoë)
Sean Maher (Simon)
Adam Baldwin (Jayne)
Jewel Staite (Kaylee)
Ron Glass (Book)
Morena Baccarin (Inara)

I wish Summer could of had more screen time because... (HoG spoiler)

Her few lines in HoG when she was looking for the baby "Who do you think is in there?" were wonderful.

I wish I could come up with a list here,

it just depends so much on which episode....

Gotta like Nathan in all of them though

I can't do a list. I can however do groups.

Adam, Nathan, Gina - the Best of the group

Ron,Alan,Jewel- the middle of the group

Sean,Summer - perfectly fine

Morena the weakest link

I would like to add that I think Alan did well but Wash as a character needed more depth. The more I rewatch the greater my respect for his acting.

Inara with lots of depth as a character always seemed somewhat flat.

River: The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds, given adequate vacuuming systems.
Mal: See, morbid and creep-ifying I got no problem with, long as she does it quiet-like.

Aaugh! I tried, but I just can't do it. I love all their acting in different ways for different reasons. Each have their great moments and their not so great (but never bad) moments.

Since I can't just make a list without oodles of explanation this is probably going to turn into a much longer post than it has any right to be.

Nathan Fillion (Mal)- Every bone in my body cries out against putting him up top simply because I never identified with Mal as much as I felt I should with a lead, but I have to admit Nathan is extraordinary. He can play comedy and drama equally well and I never failed to be impressed with his performance.

Summer Glau (River) - She's been accused of overacting, but I just never saw that. The material she was given would be difficult for even the most seasoned of actresses, but considering how little experience Summer has, she blows me away everytime. I think the reason that River's more obscure babble is so hotly debated can be directly attributed to Summer. The audience and other characters might not understand what she's saying, but the performance makes it clear that it's not just nonsensical rambling.

Alan Tudyk (Wash) - I have never been more sure of two characters love for one another than I was of Zoe and Wash's. And I think this is thanks mostly to Alan. As cliche as it sounds, the way he looked at her alone is enough to convey his adoration. Everyone knows he's funny, but he proved in "War Stories" that he could handle meatier stuff too.

Adam Baldwin (Jayne) - Leaving aside the fact that Adam is Hotty McHottpants as far as I'm concerned, it turns out Mr. Baldwin's a mighty fine actor too. Jayne is not a nice person, he's brutish and insensitive, but AB manages to make the guy likeable as well. He gives hints to the psychology underneath Jayne's behavior and gives the character a depth that doesn't always come through in the text.

Sean Maher (Simon) - Simon is the best brother ever! Next to Summer, Sean probably had the hardest character to play. He does the fish out of water thing without seeming like an incompetent and all of his scenes with River were just heart wrenching. I never liked him opposite Jewel, but that might just be because I had no interest in that particular relationship.

Gina Torres (Zoë) - She has 'steely, warrior woman' down pat without seeming like a cliche. I always liked that she could show the characters vulnerability in a way that didn't undermine Zoe's authoritative presence.

Jewel Staite (Kaylee) - I liked Kaylee straight off, but Jewel didn't really impress me too much until Kaylee's confrontation with Jubal Early in "Objects in Space." Jewel did a great job showing how terrified Kaylee was.

Ron Glass (Book) - Didn't get shit to do except be preachy. The character had a ton of promise though. I saw the pilot before the show aired and right away I loved Book, but as the show went on I was just more and more disappointed with him.

Morena Baccarin (Inara) - Eh. Yeah, just eh.

I am a long winded gas bag, but God was that Fun!
What about guest stars? Anybody got any best actor noms for them?
